Philosophical Major

Posted August 14, 2008

CU freshman linebacker Jon Major seems to have already worked out any anger or frustration he might be feeling after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee this week.

Major watched his teammates practice Thursday still unsure of when he will undergo surgery on the first significant injury of his life. Major said though an serious injury is never good, this one might be a blessing in the long run.

“It’s always frustrating, but I’m trying to be optimistic," he said. "In this situation, as far as timing, I think it’s probably for the best for this. It gives you a free year to develop on and off the field.”

Major is the third Buff to suffer a torn ACL in the first nine days of fall camp. He said he doesn't know if he would have played this year, but he was feeling good about his ability to compete at the Big 12 level.

“I felt I was starting to pick up things and starting to do things right,” Major said.

Coach Dan Hawkins called the three torn ACL injuries to Major, defensive lineman Drew Hudgins and offensive lineman Mike Iltis a "freak thing." He said he doesn't believe there is anything different coaches or athletic trainers could do to help prevent the injuries, all of which occurred during non-contact drills.

"We'd have to stop running cause that's basically when they've happened," Hawkins said. "It's not because guys are hitting. It's not because guys are cutting. They're all non-contact."

Today is another day of two-a-day practices. The Buffs went 9:30-11:30 this morning and return to the practice fields 7-9 p.m.

Sounds like a very grounded young man. Way to make us all proud!

Man, Major's statements make me want to root for him that much more. I can't wait to see him hit the field in 09... He's already a special Buff who will be a great player.
