A Kansas State-sized ego
Posted July 22, 2008
Big 12 football media days began this week with Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel saying he believes he is the best quarterback in the league, but admitting that saying so sounds a bit cocky.
Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman was asked Tuesday where he ranks within a conference with 10 returning signal callers, and Freeman sounded a lot like Daniel. The only problem with that is at least Daniel has the record and statistics to back it up. He did finish fourth in the Heisman Trophy race last year after all.
Freeman, a two-year starter, has thrown 26 interceptions with just 24 touchdown passes.
"There is a lot of great quarterbacks in the Big 12," Freeman said. "I feel like just knowing myself and knowing how I am competitive-wise and the type of coaches I have around me and the players I have around me, I feel like I'm the best.
"I mean, I can do stuff that nobody else in this conference can do. It's really just based on a supreme confidence and my own belief system that I'm the best every time I step on the field."
It was interesting today to listen to KSU coach Ron Prince defend signing 19 junior college players in the 2008 recruiting class in an effort to get older as a team. Most media members don't seem to buy it as a legit strategy and some are expecting a bad year to result.
Prince could come out looking like a genius if the players buy into his system. Let's face it, older, more experienced players generally benefit a program. These guys could hurt Prince if they fail to take the responsibility of attending classes seriously at this level. In an age of the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and the repercussions for poor academic performance, it's a really big gamble.
I almost wish I could fast forward two years and see how it all works out for the purple people.
