Sherman mentored Grimes
Posted October 29, 2008
Colorado offensive line coach Jeff Grimes returns to his roots a little bit this week as the Buffs travel to Texas A&M where Grimes spent two of his first three seasons in coaching.
Grimes served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M in 1996 and 1997 and worked with coach Mike Sherman, who was the Aggies' offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at the time and is now the head coach.
"I probably learned more football from him than anybody else I've worked for as an offensive line coach, and I've worked for a lot of good coaches," Grimes said. "A lot of the fundamentals of how I teach things go back to him."
Grimes and Sherman both left Texas A&M after the 1997 season. Sherman went on to coach in the NFL for 11 seasons before returning to College Station, Texas, this year.

I like Grimes, but I will forever maintain that he and the other coaches made a huge mistake in trying to switch Kai Maiava to fullback. He was a junkyard dawg in the trenches and exploded off the ball. Head and Barr don't have near the explosiveness or athleticism -- and any casual fan can see that.
Some guys, regardless of their height or size, are straight up ballers and Maiava was just that. I know Maiava said he transferred for family reasons but I do think switching positions played some factor in him leaving the CU program. What surprised me most about that is how Coach Hawk is always talking about guys being playmakers in spite of the pedigree of their high school program, their recruiting stars, size, etc. And Maiava was a freshman all-american who had played O-line his entire life.
We could really use him now. In another year, I wouldn't be surprised if Maiava is an all Pac-10 lineman for Slicky Ricky's boys.

Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more. We lost a budding future star and man could we have used him this season. I don't buy the "family reasons" rationale either. He was a starter and saw himself third on the depth chart at FB. Coaches should have stayed on top of his emotions about that much more.
