The scheduling game

Posted September 7, 2008

Colorado just doesn't seem to play well against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision. The Buffs lost to Montana State in 2006 and fought for victory to the final 2 minutes against Eastern Washington in Week 2 this season.

Fans should get used to the Buffs playing FCS teams in the future, especially if a deal to keep alive the annual in-state rivalry with Colorado State doesn't get done.

Most schools have their schedules set for the next three years already, meaning if the Buffs need to replace CSU on its 2011 schedule, it might have to dip into the FCS pool once again. CU has only played two games against FCS schools in history.

Here is an interesting note to consider. When trying to put together the 2008 schedule a few years ago after North Carolina decided it wanted out of a planned series with the Buffs, one of the schools CU came close to scheduling this fall was Arkansas State.

All the Red Wolves have done in their first two games of 2008 is upset Texas A&M at Kyle Field, one of the most difficult places to play in the country, and defeat Texas Southern 83-10.

The Buffs might have had just as much trouble with the Red Wolves as they did with the Eagles.

The Eagles nearly beat Appalachian St. last season. The same Appy St. that beat Michigan in the BIG HOUSE. That MU team had a veteran line and QB and a Heisman candidate at RB. CU played two freshmen and two sophmores. Get a more seasoned offensive line and more experience for Darrell Scott, Josh Smith and Rodney Stewart and the manner in which we beat FCS teams or CSU will be much more impressive.

RM News has a story today that might affect the CSU/CU future games.
