Colorado football fans didn’t exactly spend the semester break losing sleep over whether wide receiver Nelson Spruce would return for his senior season because the record-breaking pass catcher always said it was his intention to play another year in Boulder.

But Spruce also made it clear he planned to explore his options including what kind of evaluation the NFL Draft Advisory Board would give him. Spruce informed head coach Mike MacIntyre a week ago that he is definitely returning to the program for his senior year, in which he will likely set new career school records in every major receiving category.

Spruce caught 106 passes for 1,198 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014, becoming the first CU receiver to catch 100 passes in a season. His 106 receptions are the fourth highest total by a Pac-12 Conference receiver in history.

Spruce will enter his senior year with 206 catches, nine behind Scotty McKnight’s career record of 215. Spruce has 2,294 receiving yards in his career and needs just 255 to own that career mark. He has 19 touchdown catches in his career, three short of McKnight’s career record of 22.
