Already, the Colorado football team has four players committed for the 2017 recruiting class — four more then the Buffaloes had a year ago at this time for the 2016 class.
At some point, TraJon Cotton could join the list, but it won’t be any time soon.
“I’ll probably take my time,” said Cotton, a star at Inderkum High School in Sacramento, Calif. “I kind of want to go on my official visits once I really narrow it down. I want to take some official visits to see the game day environments of the schools I want to go to.”
A 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete, Cotton has a three-star rating and has 17 scholarship offers, according to Rivals.com, and Colorado is among the schools that have impressed him the most.
“I haven’t really narrowed it down, but a couple stand out to me – Colorado definitely, Oregon, UCLA, Nebraska, Hawaii, Utah, Oregon State,” he said.
Cotton visited CU during junior day on April 2, and on Thursday, Buffs’ offensive line coach Klayton Adams visited Cotton at school.
“I loved it,” Cotton said of his visit to Boulder. “The campus was beautiful, the scenery and everything. The facilities were top notch. I think they’re up there with Oregon’s, if not better.”
Cotton said he likes what CU is building.
“I know what Colorado was,” he said, referring to CU’s 1990 national championship. “I think they can really get back there. I love (head coach Mike) MacIntyre and I just think they’re headed in the right direction.”
Cotton could help CU’s development as a program.
At Inderkum, he plays quarterback and defensive back. Last season, he threw for 1,177 yards and eight touchdowns and ran for 388 yards and eight scores.
CU and several other schools project Cotton as a defensive back, however. He registered 49 tackles and five interceptions on defense.
Cotton enjoys playing offense and defense, but doesn’t care where he plays in college.
“Just put me on the field,” he said. “I just want to ball.”
