On the court, the Colorado men’s basketball team has made great strides in its ability to compete with national powers.
Now, the Buffs are looking to score a big victory off the court.
This weekend, CU head coach Tad Boyle and his staff will host five-star recruit Tyler Dorsey, as the 6-foot-4 combo guard makes an official visit to Boulder.
Last month, Rivals.com reported that Dorsey, who is from Pasadena, Calif., narrowed his finalists to six: CU, Arizona State, California, Kansas, Oregon and UNLV.
Recruits are allowed five official visits, and Rivals.com reported that Dorsey would make official visits to CU, Oregon (earlier this month), Kansas (Oct. 10), Arizona State (Oct. 17) and Cal. The Rivals.com report also said that Kansas would visit Dorsey’s home this week, and that Dorsey would make an unofficial visit to UNLV.
In January, Dorsey made a verbal commitment to Arizona, but backed out of that commitment in June and re-opened his recruiting.
Dorsey also recently switched high schools. He played at St. John Bosco High School last year but has since transferred to Maranatha High. Last weekend, Dorsey had 35 points for Maranatha in a game during the Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic.
“I think he’s probably one of the two or three best players in California,” Maranatha head coach Tim Tucker said. “He’s got a beautiful jump shot, can see the court, great defender and also a great rebounder. He’s just a competitor.”
Dorsey is rated by Rivals.com as one of the top 20 prospects in the country for the 2015 class. CU has one scholarship to offer in this class and if it goes to Dorsey, he would be the highest-ranked signee in Boyle’s five seasons in Boulder.
“If Colorado is lucky to get him, they’d be getting a great player,” Tucker said.
CU (23-12 a year ago) has made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, the first time in program history the Buffs have done that. The Buffs are projected to get to the Tournament again this year and would lose just one key senior — starting guard Askia Booker — after this season.
For the 2015-16 season, CU should be loaded with talent, including forwards Josh Scott, Wesley Gordon and Tory Miller, wings Tre’Shaun Fletcher and Xavier Johnson and guards Dominique Collier, Jaron Hopkins and Xavier Talton.
Adding Dorsey to the mix could make CU one of the nation’s elite teams in 2015-16.
