Transcript of 9/29 Buffzone chat with Kyle Ringo

Beat writer Kyle Ringo will answer your questions about the Colorado football team Monday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Ask your questions now or join us live on Monday.

Questions

  • MDBuff:

Kyle, Pull us back from the ledge after that debacle. Where do you see positives for the Buffs? Thanks.

    • Kyle Ringo:

OK, I'll do my best. Thanks to everyone for joining me tonight.

Let's look at the reality. Yes, the Buffs blew a chance to beat FSU and get a good road win, but at the beginning of the season, most of you would have been fine with a 3-1 start. It's not like all hope for a bowl or even a Big 12 Conference title is lost. Though, I'd say the Big 12 title is a long shot.

      How was that?

  • MDBuff:

Will the Buffs opt to run the ball more, which has seemed more effective lately? And is there a reason Scott only had 5 rushes in the last game? Is Stewart just more game ready, or is Scott hurt?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I've asked this question over and over the past couple weeks and everyone swears Scott is fine and Stewart is just more playing better. It's hard to argue with the results.

Whether they opt to run more will have a lot to do with how well they are able to run behind the patchwork offensive line they have now. This offense was young to start the season and now it's even more inexperienced.

  • MDBuff:

Any chance to see a backup QB taking some snaps, or will the staff continue with Cody for now?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I understand some of the frustration with Cody and some I think is unfounded. Regardless, I think the reality is that the guys behind him have no experience and were not able to beat him out in spring and fall camps. So why would they suddenly be better options now? No one was calling to have Cody replaced when the team was 3-0 last week. Nobody sane anyway.

  • WABUFF:

    Kyle,
Is Atkins going to be allowed to play again, this year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

We don't know the answer to that just yet. I think he has to go through the legal process with his DUI first and that could be awhile. He remains suspended indefinitely. I don't know that he would be playing over any of the guys who are available regardless.

  • MDBuff:

How could have Coach Hawkins prepared the Buffs better vs. the Noles, and will any preparation be done differently vs. Texas?

    • Kyle Ringo:

That's a tough question because reporters never know all that goes on in terms of preparation. I see these guys practicing special teams stuff way more than I saw the Buffs do it under Gary Barnett, and they stunk it up in the kicking game again. From my view, it's not like they're totally disregarding parts of the game. I think preparation from week to week always changes in some ways, so, yes, I do think there will be some stuff that changes, but not the basic message and approach.

  • MDBuff:

    Thanks for the positives, Kyle.

I like Josh Smith and he's had some long runbacks, but he's made a lot of bad return decisions and every kick to him seems like an adventure. Will they stick with him or try Speedy or someone else back there?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think it's a risk-reward deal with him right now. They work with him in practice trying to get him to focus on securing the ball first and knowing when and where to field kicks. They put him out there in the games feeling like he has a good grip on things and then he sometimes becomes the catalyst and sometimes fumbles. The first kick he fielded this year was the first one he had returned in his life in a game, so you have to keep this all in perspective. He did have some punt return experience in high school, but very little. I think when Jason Espinoza comes back, Smith might just be the kickoff return guy and Espinoza will handle punts.

  • MDBuff:

What do they need to do to beat Texas?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Don't commit turnovers. Stop the run. Run the ball well enough that Cody isn't constantly under the gun to pickup third-and-long and no stupid penalties. They have a chance with that formula every week.

  • MDBuff:

Now that Miller is out, is there any way for the O line to use more depth, like burn a redshirt or use players from other positions? I like our young guys, but I just don't see how they're going to hold up for the rest of the season. Thanks.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I'm not sure I understand the line of thinking. Why would a guy from another position be better suited to come in and play instead of someone who has been recruited to play there and has been practicing and attending all the position meetings there? It's getting thin, but there are still some capable guys doing the blocking.

  • MDBuff:

If the Buffs didn't give up 3 scores in the last couple of minutes in the first half and lost all momentum, could they have pulled out a win vs. FSU?

    • Kyle Ringo:

My crystal ball says... wait for it ..wait for it...

      ...who knows?

It obviously would have helped, but Cody hitting an open guy and the defense filling its gaps better all would have helped too. It's all woulda, coulda, shoulda really

  • MDBuff:

By all accounts, Cody had a rough day and seems to have struggled this year. Have you seen improvement from the end of last year, and do you think this is the ceiling on him, or will he continue to get better in the next couple of years?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I've seen improvement in terms of his completion percentage but he's throwing too many interceptions and that's a step backward. I don't think he has reached his potential. I don't ever think sophomores have reached their potential. I think that is pessimism at its finest.

  • MDBuff:

I know we're beating a dead horse here, but is it time to junk the spread formation and go with the I, and run the ball with Stewart and Scott the majority of the time? That would go much better with their strengths.

    • Kyle Ringo:

It's never a good idea to do anything a majority of the time. I don't think this is Chris Brown and the the 2002 offensive line. I do think it might be good to put the runningbacks in the situations and plays they are most comfortable executing, but you always have to push them to learn more and expand the playbook. This team isn't going to just line up and blow opponents off the ball right now under the current circumstances.

  • LJBUFFS:

What do the letters and or numbers written on Cody's arm signify?

Do you ever call into the big 12 coaches conference call? If not, why?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I'm on the call all the time, I don't ask questions of coach Hawkins because I have access to him the night before and usually have my questions answered then.

I'll have to ask about the letters and numbers on Cody's arm. Check my blog for an answer later in the week.

  • MDBuff:

Did you see the Nebraska-VT game? I know we'll find out in November, but do you think they are better than us right now?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I saw some of that game as I was writing in the pressbox on Saturday. I do Big 12 power rankings in my column every Tuesday. I've had the Buffs ahead of the Corn all year. Cu is No. 7 this week and Nebraska is No. 8. I just can't believe in a team until I see it go on the road and play, Nebraska doesn't do that until the middle of October.

  • LJBUFFS:

Do you think Coach Hawkins genuinely likes Colorado? Do you see him potentially staying here for a long period of time?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I do think he likes it here. I think he has been frustrated at times with the bureaucracy at CU, but he also likes the challenge of it and the Big 12. At this point, I think he's going to have to win some more games before he gets a lot of other opportunities at other BCS schools. I don't think there are a lot of places he would rather be. Maybe Notre Dame, Oregon, Cal, Washington?

  • MDBuff:

Helfrich's play calling appeared very predictable and ineffective. Would you agree, or place this one on Cody?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I wouldn't agree with either. The play calling was good enough to get a few guys wide open, but the quarterback and receivers couldn't connect. It also gave both Scott and Stewart chances for long runs, but they didn't make the right reads or cuts. I don't think the outcome of any football game is ever totally on one guy. That's just me.

  • LJBUFFS:

MD this was a team loss, Helfrich, Cody, Coach Hawk, everyone.

Kyle does the team fly out of DIA and do they usually leave on Friday for a Saturday game or on Thursday? Do you and Mark and Zimm all fly with the team?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yes, the team charters flights out of DIA and leaves the day before the game, except for bowls. I do not travel with the team. I fly commercially the day before and come back on Sunday mornings.

  • MDBuff:

Why was there only 40,000 in Jacksonville? And there looked to be a lot fewer in the seats. I thought Florida was football crazy, especially for the Noles.

    • Kyle Ringo:

Well, not so much lately with the Noles sort of struggling a bit and the economy taking a tough turn. They have played regular season games there in the past but usually against other teams from the southeast. Last year there were 85,000 for the Alabama-FSU game in the same stadium.

  • MDBuff:

Why didn't the Buffs try to stuff the run more, thereby forcing Ponder to pass?

    • Kyle Ringo:

They did try to do that. It didn't work.

  • LJBUFFS:

I believe that the addition of Riar Geer has really helped in the running game. Do you see us throwing to him more or is it more that Pat is the receiving TE and Riar the blocking?

Any insight on Kendrick leaving the program?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think Riar does both and will do more in the passing game as the season goes along, but he is definitely the best blocker at tight end right now.

Kendrick won't talk about why he is leaving so I have to go by what the coaches say, and that is he had some personal issues with his family he felt like he needed to focus on.

  • MDBuff:

Who's in your top 3 in the Big 12, and do you think we will see a Big 12 team in the BCS bowl?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Last question this week folks. Thanks for participating.

I do think either OU, Mizzou or Texas will be in the BCS title game. Those are my top three in the Big 12 right now.

      Thanks again everyone.
