Questions

  • MDBuff:

Do you think we'll see Goree play on the O-line vs. K-State? What do you think about the switch?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Goree is definitely back to practicing offense this week, and I think coaches will get him in there when and if they believe he is ready. I like that these coaches are will to make a bold move like that, and I think they should put him in there if they think he can help them. This offense needs some better blocking right now.

  • dirtyp28:

Why is it that our offense doesn't get the ball in the hands of its playmakers outside of Rodney Stewart? Scott is wasting a way on the bench while Sumler notices up one yard per carry. J-Fly only gets the ball twice a game and when he does we do good things with it. But where is Geer, Scott, Smith, Pat Williams, etc. in the game plan?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Scott is hurt or he would be on the field more. Josh Smith was hurt during the first half at Kansas but came back and played. He was a pretty big factor when he was in there. Geer has been kind of a missing man. I'm not sure why they haven't used him more. Pat Williams gets his share of opportunities every game and takes advantage of some of them. None of these guys are going to be really dynamic without better blocking all around.

  • 14ers4me:

    Kyle,
Please find out why Darrell Scott has not been playing. If he's hurt, why one or two carries the last couple of games? Hagen says he's hurt, Hawkins says he's fine. What's going on and when do they plan on getting him 10-15 carries a game?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I thought I did find this out Saturday. He is hurt. Hagan said so and Scott confirmed it. He will get 10 to 15 carries a game when he is no longer hurt. That is what he was getting to start the season. Since then he has had a knee and an ankle injury. Hang in there. Darrell will be back.

  • WABUFF:

    Good evening Kyle,
The box score posted on the CU web site(cubuffs.com), lists Bryce Givens as a particpant in last Saturday's game. Is it correct to assume that was a mistake?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Good Evening and thanks for joining me. Probably should have started with that. My bad.

Yes, it is correct to assume that is a mistake. The box score also had quarterback Nick Nelson making some tackles on defense, when those tackles were made by Jimmy Smith. They wear the same number. Not sure how the KU stat crew got Givens wrong.

  • MDBuff:

    Kyle,
Thanks for answering all of our questions. There's a lot of negative chatter on the comments, mostly directed toward the offense, coaching, and Cody. What are your thoughts? Should we be more patient after a third straight loss?

    • Kyle Ringo:

It's my pleasure. Thanks for participating. Some of those folks have no idea what they are talking about and basically like to call people names and say provocative stuff anonymously. Sort of makes me sick really, but, hey, we provide the forum and this is America, so they can basically say what they want.

I'm not going to tell anyone they should be more or less patient. That's a personal decision. I do think most fans see the reality and that is that there are three guys playing on the offensive line right now, who weren't expected to be taking the majority of the snaps this season. That, quite obviously, has an effect on how the quarterback and the running backs play. It's just a fact. But some people convince themselves otherwise.

  • jeermaheer:

What QBs will be working with the first teamers during practice this week? With Cody's confidence a little shaken, is there chance we see more of Ballenger to help ease the pressure?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I would say Cody gets the majority of snaps since coach Hawkins has said he will continue to be the starter. I seriously doubt this becomes a situation where Ballenger is getting a series here and there. Coach Hawkins doesn't like that approach. Does your boss generally do stuff that goes against what he or she believes in? Mine sure don't. I doubt Hawkins will do anything at quarterback until he believes Ballenger gives him a better chance to win that Cody. That's not the case right now.

  • MDBuff:

What are your impressions of Ballenger for the past couple of games? Do you think we will see more of him?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think Matt has been in the same tough situation Cody has been in and he's had his own nerves to deal with on top of it. I think he has done OK when he has been in there, but things are a little different when the score is 30-14 and you're not being blitzed and the defense is playing pretty vanilla and just trying to avoid giving up a big play. Apples and Oranges.

  • jeermaheer:

Are there any updates on some of the newcomers from last year? Katoa, Rippy, Givens, Simas? What about some of the injuries like Major, Miller, MTM?

    • Kyle Ringo:

All those guys continue to practice with the team and are expected to redshirt this season. Some of them look pretty good in practice, but that's about the extent of it. Major is walking without crutches and seems to be coming along well. He said he feels good but still won't be cleared to run for awhile. Miller and Max Tuioti-Mariner are just in the initial stages of dealing with their injuries and surgeries, but they both seem to have good attitudes about it.

  • MDBuff:

Is the K-State game a must win if we want to get to a bowl game? Do you forsee better play from the offense since K-State's defense is weaker than the Buffs' most recent opponents?

    • Kyle Ringo:

It looks like a must win if you're looking at the whole schedule and trying to find potential wins. But the reality is it's not a must win until the number of wins needed is the same as the number of remaining games.

I do think the Buffs should move the ball better this week, but not necessarily because the KSU defense is a little rough around the edges. I think the CU offense can play better than it has lately.

  • WABUFF:

    Kyle,
Do the Buffs expect many recruits to visit this week? Have you heard of any in particular?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I believe they are hosting a handful of recruits. One is already committed to CU. His name is Clark Evans and he is a quarterback from California. I believe they are also expecting official visits from linebacker Keenan Graham and wide receiver Bryce McNeal, who is committed to Michigan

  • jeermaheer:

With the DC actually writing a story about perceived dissension amongst the ranks, is there a problem in the locker room? Who are some of the leaders behind closed doors?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I have no idea what you're talking about. The team had a meeting last night that everyone characterized as a good thing. No mention of dissension. The leaders on this team are the captains as well as guys like Cody, Ryan Miller and George Hypolite

  • MDBuff:

There's lots of negative comments after the article toward Cody, the o-line, and game plan. Do you think the fans need to have more patience? What can the Buffs do immediately to help turn around their anemic offense?

    • Kyle Ringo:

There might not be much they can do to turn it around outside of continuing to try to do what they do better. It's not like they can sign a free agent or something. I think it will help to not be playing one of the top 30 defenses in the country. Getting a healthy Darrell Scott out there would help. As for the rest of your question, please see an earlier answer to a similar one

  • MDBuff:

Any update on recruits? We're very young, so would the possibility of immediate playing time entice them? Do you think we will have another top recruiting class despite the losses based on the direction of the program?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't know that they will get a top recruiting class unless they get some more wins, but I think they can definitely get more good players. They got a pretty good recruiting class in 2007 coming off a 2-10 year in 2006.

  • jeermaheer:

There is confusion over Scott's status with Coach Hawk telling the press that he's fine while Coach Hagan follows up the next day saying he isn't. Is there a reason why the coaches are saying two different things? Is Scott in Hawk's doghouse for not playing through the pain?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don'[t think Scott is in anyone's doghouse. Hawkins just hates talking about injuries. That's what I chalk it up to.

  • jeermaheer:

The offensive line seemed to play better against KU than Texas or FSU. Is that more a function of those three defenses or is the line starting to come together and play more as a unit? What are practices looking like with the OLine??

    • Kyle Ringo:

It's a combination of both. All due respect to Kansas, but the Jayhawks are not as good on the defensive line or front seven as Texas or FSU.

  • jeermaheer:

With Cody Hawkins struggling behind center, a lot of fans are calling for Ballenger or Nelson. Is there a reason why the staff hasn't worked those guys in more during practice and games?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Because they don't believe either one of those guys would give them a better chance to win. In fact, they would probably have to simplify even more stuff to do that.

  • MDBuff:

What does Coach Hawkins do to help his team morale and keep everyone focused so that a 3 game slide doesn't turn into a much longer one?

    • Kyle Ringo:

He doesn't overreact and make irrational decisions based on emotions. He keeps the same expectations and keeps pushing them to meet those expectations. He corrects things like penalties and mental errors with punishments such as more running. But the answer is that he doesn't do anything dramatic or outside the norm. Really, you build a culture over the long haul and in the offseason so that when you come to points like this, everyone in the program has the backbone to handle it.

  • jeermaheer:

What do you think of Tyler Hanson? There are reports that he has a lot of the tools to be successful during his time at CU.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tyler Hansen play next season. I don't know if that means he would be the starter or the backup or what. But it wouldn't surprise me. He's pretty good and has the ability to make plays with his feet when things break down around him. Also has a good arm.

  • MDBuff:

At 3 and 3, is this where you thought they'd be before the start of the season? What do you think of the defense so far?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yes, it is. I thought they had a chance to be 4-2, but that is the best I thought they would be. I think the defense has really played pretty well outside of a few instances of poor tackling and a couple blown assignments that led to big plays.

  • jeermaheer:

The Buffs seem to play the majority of offense outside the hash marks. Why do you think that is? Any chance we see more screens, crossing routes, etc.?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't think they play the majority of offense outside the hash marks. The running game certainly isn't that way. The one thing this offense lacks right now is a tight end or other receiver working the middle of the field effectively.

  • jeermaheer:

Thanks for answering all the questions, Kyle. Last one from me...

Give us your prediction on the second half of the season. What are some of the keys to get back to a bowl game? How important is a bowl game for recruiting?

    • Kyle Ringo:

A bowl game is huge for recruiting and for the extra practice for returning players. Plus it's huge for the program in many other ways not the least of which is fundraising. I think the Buffs find a way to go 3-3 and might find themselves back in Shreveport for the Independence Bowl against another SEC team.

  • jeermaheer:

Despite game results, CU has improved recently with execution, penalties, lining up correctly...did the staff recognize some inefficiencies and decide to specifically work on these issues?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think they always work on these issues and players probably just got sick of extra running they might have had to do with missed assignments and penalties. They are still making plenty of mistakes though. They haven't played a real clean game yet this season.

Thanks for all the questions everyone. Let's talk again next week.
