Questions

  • dirtyp28:

What do you think is the biggest recruiting need for the Buffs this year? And, should Dan Hawkins consider using a scholarship for a kicker given the poor job Aric Goodman has done this year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Greetings all. Thanks for joining me tonight. Let's get to it.

This is easy. This team needs more playmakers at wide receiver. It also could use some more good sized cornerbacks and the offensive and defensive lines are always a priority. I'd say defensive linemen are just a little bit more in need this cycle, but this year has proven you can never have too many good offensive linemen.

  • MDBuff:

    Hi Kyle,
Who do you think will start at QB this week? Do you think Hansen will receive more or fewer snaps than last week? Thanks.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think it doesn't really matter who starts cause coach Hawkins has already said both Tyler and Cody will play. I think Tyler will probably play about half the time once again, unless he really has things rolling, then coaches will stick with him.

  • MDBuff:

Think anyone else on the Buffs will have their redshirt burned?

    • Kyle Ringo:

      No.

  • MDBuff:

ESPN's Big 12 blog listed CU as the 8th best team in the conference, behind Nebraska and ahead of K-State. Would you agree with that assessment?

    • Kyle Ringo:

No. If you read my Big 12 power rankings Tuesday morning you will see I have the Buffs at No. 7 ahead of both those teams. But I don't think there is a big difference between them. I think CU's defense is better than the other two.

  • MDBuff:

Hansen led the Buffs to 2 TDs early on, and then seemed to stall. Do you think the K-State defense had him "figured out" later in the game?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Not really, but I do think the Wildcats had time to adjust and were playing better defense at the end of the game.

  • jeermaheer:

How realistic is it to see Scott and Stewart on the field at the same time this year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think it's realistic. I don't know how much it will happen, but I don't know why coaches wouldn't want to go with that look sometimes.

  • MDBuff:

You had said earlier that you thought on this tough stretch, that the games could go either for or against the Buffs, but you didn't think they had much of a shot on the road vs. Mizzou? (I'm paraphrasing.) Do you still feel that way?

    • Kyle Ringo:

For the most part I do. I think the Buffs will have a tough time outscoring the Mizzou offense. I think the defense will have to play lights out and hold Missouri under 30 points. I'm not sure this defense is that good, despite a solid outing against KSU.

  • MDBuff:

Were you surprised by Darrell Scott's frustrations in your recent article where he said, "Honestly, you don’t pay attention to him" (about Hagan) and "I don’t care if he’s questioning me. I know my limits and I know what I can do.” Also, do you think he should wait until he's fully healed, or as Hagan believes that you need to play through it?

    • Kyle Ringo:

No, I wasn't surprised. I have found Darrell to be a straight shooter who says what he means. I don't think he meant it in a disrespectful or insubordinate way. I just think he was being honest. If you're hurt, there is only so much you're going to be able to take from someone who is questioning you before you do just decide to deal with it yourself. I do think Darrell should play through it unless it's too bad to play at all, because if he sits out every time he has a bad bruise of a sore joint or muscle, he's going to miss about 2/3 of his career.

  • IowaBuffFan:

Any word on the recruits in town this weekend?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I haven't heard of any commitments, but I do think a few of those guys really like CU. Colton Nash and Bryce McNeal could really help this team.

  • jeermaheer:

Are the coaches giving any additional attention to special teams as of late? The Buffs really seem to struggle in that part of the game from penalties, to coverage, to kicking/punting...

    • Kyle Ringo:

I would agree with that assessment, but I don't think they are emphasizing it more because they have already emphasized it quite a bit. It's how they have been since they got here.

  • MDBuff:

How's Josh Smith feeling? Wasn't his ankle bothering him? Any injury from that cheap shot he took on a return?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Josh is a little sore, but he's OK. Dan Hawkins said there were no significant new injuries coming out the KSU game. Most of the guys who play on a regular basis are dealing with some sort of issue at this point in the season.

  • MDBuff:

Who's a better Heisman candidate right now, McCoy or Bradford?

    • Kyle Ringo:

McCoy would get my vote, if for no other reason than the fact he beat Bradford in the head-to-head matchup.

  • jeermaheer:

How much of the playbook have you seen Hansen practice? Do you think he may be passing out of the spread in sooner rather than later?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Hansen spent much of the first part of the season as the scout team quarterback, meaning he was running the other team's plays each week. He is familiar with most of the CU offense, but it will be a few weeks before he feels really solid with the majority of it.

  • mam2jd:

Say Kyle, how'd you draw this gig? Mano a mano against the Broncos, nice!

To the Buffs - I'm interested in your mid-season eval of the state of the Buffs? Are they who we thought they were? Better? Worse?

How does the bowl picture look?

    • Kyle Ringo:

The Broncos got nothing on me.

I think they are exactly who we thought they would be. Really. I think they could have had one more win right now, but we knew they would be young and building and struggling each week to find ways to win against powerful offenses and veteran quarterbacks in the Big 12. That's exactly what has happened. No one back in July looked at the roster and the scheduled and figured the Buffs would be bowl eligible right now. Anyone who says they did is a liar.

  • BuffTime:

    Hi Kyle,
Does Darrell Scott get much practice time out wide as a receiver? We have seen him there on a couple of plays and he has shown he can catch the ball. If he is better out in space it would seem to be a good way to use him and spread the defense out more too...

    • Kyle Ringo:

They have been splitting Darrell out on occasion since training camp. We haven't seen much of it in games, but maybe they will do more of it down the stretch here. I think it would be a good idea to get the guy in space. He has good hands, too.

  • MDBuff:

In the long term, do you think Hansen will be the starter and Cody serves as backup? How does Ballenger fit into all of this?

    • Kyle Ringo:

It all depends on how Hansen develops in the passing game. He threw an interception the other day that people would have killed Cody for throwing. He can't make those kinds of mistakes consistently in the future and expect to win the job, unless Cody continues to make them, too. I do believe he has more ability to make plays on his own than Cody and that will lead to him becoming the starter. When? I don't know. Maybe soon. Maybe next year. I think Ballenger has to raise his level of play in practice to get a shot and then produce when he gets it. He can still contribute to this program and this year's team.

  • luvdaskers:

I agree with Kyle that NU, CU and KSU pretty similar. But I think deciding factor maybe NU has a more productive offense and a consistent Qb. I don't see the Buffs D being that much better than NU and NU is slowly improving on that side.

Another factor is play of NU d line, easily best unit of NU D facing a cu o line with issues to say the least.

    • Kyle Ringo:

Could be. I'm not really going to argue the point. I just see CU as a little better overall right now. I think any of those three teams could beat the others on a given day. Very similar to me.

  • jeermaheer:

What will it take for the Buffs to turn the corner on offense and put up more than 14 points? I think CU may need to start scoring more if we plan on watching them in December/January.

    • Kyle Ringo:

They need to be unpredictable and have players making plays at all positions. It's really that simple. They're getting better as the season goes on. I think a big key is the offensive line improving and getting the running game going each week. That helps the quarterbacks a ton.

  • jeermaheer:

While Stewart is running the ball very effectively, a lot of folks are interested in seeing what Scott can do. Why have we only seen him get spot duty? He very rarely gets more than two or three consecutive plays.

    • Kyle Ringo:

Because Speedy has proven he is the best guy to be on the field at this point. Scott has been hurt and hasn't found his comfort zone at this level yet. I still think he will find it at some point and become a very good player.

  • mam2jd:

You are right Kyle. The Broncos have two turnovers and a three and out. Down 6-0.

What's the prognosis for the Offense going forward? Do you see Hansen continuing to be a sparkplug or does he eventual starter in his future?

Seems like the line continues to struggle (with the exception of somewhat better better play on Saturday)leading to running game getting stuffed, mucho sacks or QB pressure no matter who's back there??

    • Kyle Ringo:

Like I said earlier, I think the line is getting better. I do think Hansen will be the starter at some point in the future and it would not surprise me if it was this season. He's a really solid young player. The line also will get better. I think Goree might become a starter by the end of the year at guard and that will help. He's a load.

  • jeermaheer:

The defense is doing a good job with the bend but don't break mentality. Do you think CU can continue to play strong and not wear down over the second half?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Sure they can. Part of the reason they were wearing down in the second half during the three-game losing streak was because the offense was going three-and-out so much.

  • MDBuff:

I heard Kanavis's kid is going to Minnesota instead of the Buffs. Was there any surprise in the Buffs office that he signed elsewhere?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't know because they can't talk about specific recruits like that. I'm sure there is probably a little surprise in some quarters, but just because he is the son of a favorite old Buff, doesn't mean he sees himself in black and gold.

  • luvdaskers:

With that offense! Better? RIGHT!! That offense is terrible!

    • Kyle Ringo:

      Get a grip

  • MDBuff:

So are we're headed back to Shreveport in late December?!? I like Tempe a lot better. Think that's a possibility?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think both are possibilities. It's also possible the Buffs could win six games and stay home. Who knows. I'd like to cover another bowl game though. I don't think 6-6 is a sure thing. The Buffs could lose the rest of their games. I would give them an outside shot at winning them all as well.

  • mam2jd:

I'll try not to ask what you've already answered.

Am wondering how much, if any, contact you get with the recruits that come in for officials/unofficials? Trying to get a gauge of how Hawks decision to pull Cody was received. Especially with Clark Evans here?

We see sooooo much made about nepotism re: the Qb slot.

    Your thoughts/perceptions?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think it's now obvious there is no nepotism happening. I don't have any access to recruits on official visits. I have to wait to get in touch with them after they have left campus. Haven't heard much from the most recent group.

  • BuffTime:

    Hey Kyle,
When did they change the schedule? I could have sworn we don't play Nebraska until the end of the season... Weird how some NU fans seem to think this is game week...

    • Kyle Ringo:

That's okay. Nebraska fans are people, too.

  • luvdaskers:

Kyle, you're a lil nuts if you think cu d is going to keep Ganz and company under 14-17 points.

Because in looking at that cu offense, thats what it is going to take for them to win the rest of the year.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I never said that. Considering the final score last year had both teams over 50 points, i would agree that is would be surprising to see one hold the other to less than 20. But I don't know why it couldn't happen.

  • mam2jd:

Nice effort tonight, Kyle. Since the Broncos are stinking it up, YOU are the best show in town.

Any chance you'll drop your pick for next week on us early? Neill's not here.

    I got nothin else!

    • Kyle Ringo:

I got nothin else either. We'll make this the last question. Thanks to everyone for playing, yes, even the obnoxious but entertaining Husker fan.

I'm taking Missouri to win, but the Buffs to play well. Not sure of a score yet. I just don't see the Tigers losing three in a row.
