LIVE CHAT: Ask CU football beat writer Kyle Ringo your questions about the Buffs now.

Transcript of 10/27 Buffzone chat with Kyle Ringo

CU Beat writer Kyle Ringo will answer your questions about the Colorado football team Monday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Ask your questions now or join us live on Monday.

Questions

  • MDBuff:

58-0. Are the Tigers that good or are the Buffs that bad? How do they recover for next week?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Thanks for the question MD. I was starting to get lonely here. The Buffs get shut out for the first time in 20 years and I almost did too tonight.

Anyway, The Tigers are that good and the Buffs just didn't come well prepared and confident in themselves. It looked to me like when the Tigers took a 14-0 lead, the Buffs lost the faith.

  • MDBuff:

Do you think they should have gone for a field goal at the end to give Goodman a chance to straighten out his game?

    • Kyle Ringo:

No. Goodman can continue to work on his game in practice. If they were going to kick a field goal, they should have kicked one in the third quarter when it was 34-0. At the end of the game, it would have looked cheap. Take all your timeouts, get it in the end zone. I'm fine with that, but kicking the field goal just to extend some meaningless scoring steak would have been ridiculous. It wasn't even an offensive streak anyway.

  • MDBuff:

Thanks, Kyle. You the man! What do you think of A&M favored by 3.5? How do the Buffs get out of their offensive rut?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I have no problem at all with the Aggies being favored. They aren't having the best season and can definitely be beaten, but Kyle Field is a real tough place for anyone to play. And here is the most important part, the CU offense is, well, just not very good right now.

  • MDBuff:

Do you think they lost confidence and that it was basically over when it was 14-0?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yes, it was never even a game after the first five minutes. It was one of the worst games I've had to sit through in 10 years of covering sports. I mean, there was never a doubt in my mind that Missouri was going to win once it got to be 14-0. It was over, done, kaput.

  • MDBuff:

Do you think the Huskers are much better than the Buffs after their come from behind win vs. Baylor?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think they are better, but not much better. Why not? Well, you said it yourself. They needed to come-from-behind to beat Baylor, at home. They still have issues.

  • MDBuff:

Why was Suazo inserted as a punter? Anything wrong with DiLallo?

    • Kyle Ringo:

No. coaches wanted to keep the ball away from Jeremy Maclin and because they were on the right hash mark, they thought the right footed punter would have an easier time making the directional kick. Simple as that. They also want to create a little competition and reward Suazo for his hard work.

  • MDBuff:

How did D. Scott look? Are they trying to get him more in the open field?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I still think Darrell is coming along. They used him as a blocker in the passing game at times and also as a receiver a little bit. He is sort of being used to fill other shortcomings at times, which speaks to his unselfish nature.

  • MDBuff:

Who looked better to you - Cody or Hansen? Were you surprised that Hansen started?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I wasn't surprised at all that he started. I mentioned that it could happen in my game advance on Saturday morning. I thought they both looked pretty similar.

  • MDBuff:

Lots of chatter in response to your posts to get rid of Helfrich, fire Bohn, bring Ballenger back, etc. What do you make of all of it?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Just to be clear, I didn't post any of those things. Those are the opinions of others. I think everyone is welcome to their opinions. I don't agree with any of those opinions, with the exception of Ballenger, but only if coaches truly believe he is the best guy to have out there. I would hate to see them turn to him now as an act of desperation. I doubt that would happen.

  • MDBuff:

Any recruiting news? It seems that we're desperate for some playmakers.

    • Kyle Ringo:

Here is your recruiting news. Getting beat 58-0 is not good for recruiting.

  • Malastein:

How much of the problem the buffs have had on offense do you attribute to losing two starters on the offensive line?

    • Kyle Ringo:

A lot of it, but the team was going to have its struggles any way this season just because it was going to be young on the line even before it lost the two starters. But, yeah, I think this offense's problems begin with the line and expand from there.

  • luvdaskers:

That BU team is not the BU of old. Don't kid yourself, they aren't great, but aren't the doormat they used to be. Griffin is a special athlete and they had a couple all conference type players on defense with LB Pawelek or whatever his name is and Safety J. Lake.

Big difference between NU and CU right now are one has a very productive offense with a consistent QB and players around him. I see the two D as very similar

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yeah, I can agree with all of that. Check out my Big 12 power rankings in the Tuesday paper or online.

  • BuffTime:

    Hi Kyle,
I tried to get into the chat at & but there was no link up until just a few minutes ago. I think that has a lot to do with the dialog you have going with just you and MDBuff so far...

There has been a lot of chatter on the boards these past few days. A lot of it speculating on various players questioning the program and if they should transfer. Since you've actually been around these players, I would appreciate your thoughts on the feel within the players (apart from just getting blown out) and if you have heard any rumblings of discontent?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I have not heard any rumblings of discontent. I think these guys really like each other. It wouldn't surprise me if a few guys transferred. I say that simply because it seems to happen in most programs every year. I don't think there are big, bad problems in the CU locker room. Just a bunch of young guys struggling to grow up quick.

  • MDBuff:

There has been talk on coacheshotseat.com (or some site like that) that Coach Hawkins is #9 on the hot seat and that Colorado should consider moving from the Big 12 to a possible WAC/MWC superconference. Any credence to that?

    • Kyle Ringo:

That is idiotic. I don't mean that to be directed at you. I know you are just the messenger. But whoever said that has no idea wha the heck they are saying. They just gave Hawkins a contract extension. He isn't going anywhere unless he chooses to.

  • MDBuff:

What can the Buffs do immediately to improve their anemic offense? I was thinking some more short throws toward the sidelines would help open things up, or use two tight ends? What do you think?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Get them running downhill and playing with more aggression again. Play whoever you have to play on the offensive line to get it going. Use some trick plays. Get more creative with how you get the ball to Josh Smith and Darrell Scott. Keep Darrell Scott on the field for longer stretches. Give him the ball 5,6,7 times in a row or close together anyway. Simplify if you have to.

  • BuffTime:

    Hi Kyle,

    • Kyle Ringo:

I already posted this once, but I should apologize for the technical problems tonight.

  • MDBuff:

Was Hawkins upset that Pinkel put his starters back in at the end to preserve a shutout even though the game was well within hand?

    • Kyle Ringo:

We didn't ask him about it, but I sort of doubt it. That's not Hawkins' style. Trust me, if he ever gets this thing rolling here, he's going to get asked about running it up on people. He likes that aggressive philosophy

  • nolanjp:

Do you think that there will be any coaching changes on the offesnive side of the ball if our offense does not improve the final games of the season?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't think you can spend the season downplaying it and talking about the difficulty of the schedule and the youth of your team and then point the finger at someone or several guys at the end. That's bogus one way or the other and you lose a ton of credibility.

  • BuffTime:

Another point of discussion has been the relative talents that Ballenger, Cody, and Hansen bring to the game and if Ballenger should be starting and Cody not playing at all. How do you rate them as far as what they bring to the table?

    • Kyle Ringo:

People just don't seem to get this. There are reasons why Ballenger isn't out there now. And none of them are named Cody Hawkins. Coaches have proven they have no problem playing someone other than Cody. If Ballenger was getting it done in practice, he'd be out there. Period. No one can argue that at this point.

  • Malastein:

Is Hawkins going to be able to match his recruiting haul from last year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Who knows. He has surprised me two years in a row now. So I'm not betting against him, but this team needs to start playing better or it could hurt recruiting.

  • BuffTime:

There are more "kickers" than just Goodman and Davis on the team. If you count punters Sauzo and Dilallo then there are 4 players who kick. Why is it only Goodman and Davis who have been considered for field goals and extra points? Davis being injured has meant that it has been just Goodman. I know punting is different from field goals, but it is still kicking... Are they even trying the other guys to see if they can get some real competition going and if they can have options?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Because DiLallo and Suazo don't practice field goals and extra points. You might as well put me out there or tryout yourself if you want to go down that road. That's like saying me and the dude who covers state politics would be equally effective reporting if we just switched beats for a few days. We're both reporters right? wrong. I'd screw up his beat in a matter of hours.

  • MDBuff:

Coach Hawkins seemed pretty even keeled in his comments - did he get angry or upset with the way the players played, or just put it on the coaches?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't think he gets real angry with his guys often. He would see that as unproductive. He practices what he preaches for the most part, but he is definitely a different guy to interview after wins and losses. He's always fair to me though and answers whatever I ask.

  • luvdaskers:

Thanks Kyle, Have a great night in the land of the Buffalo's

    • Kyle Ringo:

Thanks. You, too, wherever you might be.

  • Malastein:

What is the recruiting scene looking like? Is the on field product making it more difficult to recruit?

    • Kyle Ringo:

The Buffs are still involved with a lot of high level recruits who are interested, in part, because they believe they can contribute right away. But this team can't keep getting shellacked and expect to sign many of those type players.

  • MDBuff:

Kyle, Sorry for the misunderstanding - I meant negative "posts in response to your articles" not "in response to your posts".

I was able to enter the chat immediately - not sure why others had technical difficulties. Thanks for taking all of all questions.

    • Kyle Ringo:

No worries. Thanks for the questions as always.

  • MDBuff:

Looks like it's just you and me tonight. I appreciate you taking my questions. Do you think the Buffs could still pull off 2 or 3 of their last four?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think they could, but they have to play much, much better than they have, particularly on offense. I'm not a big believer though.

  • Malastein:

How do you think this team will finish out the rest of the year? Do they still have a chance at making a bowl game? Or is there still too much work to be done in too short of time?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Sure, they can make a bowl game, but as I have said a few times tonight. They need to get it together quickly. I see the A&M and Iowa State games as winnable. Nebraska could be a win. OSU should blast this bunch based on what I've seen.

  • bufffan8:

with Darrel, Polk, Speedy, Moyd, Sumler and Lockridge all back next year any chance of moving a RB to DB next year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Who? I think all those guys ought to stay at running back and recruit more defensive backs. You get Ben Burney back next year, too.

  • benny1j:

I agree with you on running down hill and getting Scott some consistent reps, but do the coaches agree?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Last question of the night. Thanks to everyone.

Don't know on this because Darrell hasn't been real healthy yet this season. He is about as good as he has been since training camp now. So I guess we'll find out this week in the heart of Texas.
