Questions

  • dpease:

    Hi Kyle,

10 carries for Scott! That was it? The guy runs off a 42 yard run and he gets omly a couple more carries!??! Please explain.
What happened on that second and goal from the two? Calling a reverse? Run the ball!
Also, ask Hawk the hard question: why is your offense still terrible in your third year? And don't say injuries b/c everyone has them or that we are young b/c so is A&M and Alabama. Get rid of Helfich now and pick a qb!
    Go Buffs!

    • Kyle Ringo:

Greetings all. I guess we'll get right into tonight. I sense a little hostility in this first one.

I don't really have explanations for you other than what I have put in the paper already as far as Scott and the "sweep." With all due respect, I ask Hawkins plenty of hard questions.

I will say this, you probably need to educate yourself a little on the entrance requirements at Alabama and A&M as compared to CU before you make that comparison. It's just a fact that they can get guys in there that can't get in to CU, and that makes it a little bit easier to rebuild. Plus, I don't think those programs were at the low point talent-wise that this one was when Hawk got here.

Now, having said all that. I agree that this offense is really a disaster considering we're in Week 10 of Year Three.

  • mulder1010:

    Hey Kyle,

One question, though lenghty. Do you think that the Big 12 North will ever be on equal footing with the South and how can the North schools cut into an obvious talent gap that the South schools have.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't know that it's ever going to be totally equalized. The South schools have some financial and geographical advantages that some North schools such as CU, Iowa State and Kansas State will never overcome. For instance, the Texas schools don't have to leave the state to recruit. CU and ISU and KSU get most of their players from out of state. I do think there will always be one or two teams in the North that are capable of beating any of the South teams. I think Missouri and Kansas can this year if they play their best.

  • MDBuff:

    Is Goodman done?

    • Kyle Ringo:

No. He'll be back. People are a little rough on that kid if you ask me. Granted, he's missed seven straight, but he's got a good leg and he's not off by much. He will get it together at some point.

  • MDBuff:

Why didn't Sumler or Scott try to power the ball in at the 2 yd. line instead of calling for a reverse to McKnight that failed miserably?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I'm sure Sumler or Scott would have loved the opportunity. They don't call the plays. Coaches thought they saw something on film that would allow the runner to pretty much walk into the end zone. Probably a case of the coaches making the game more difficult than it needs to be. Why be cute about it?

  • MDBuff:

    Hi Kyle,
Hawk called you an "aspiring journalist"?!? What's that all about, and why do you think Josh Smith hasn't received more opportunities to play more?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I didn't take what Hawkins said as an insult. Maybe a poor choice of words on his part, but I understood his point. No big deal. You have to have a thick skin on both sides of this business. I think Josh has had a few bumps and bruises that have kept him off the field at times and he has dropped a few passes and put the ball on the ground, too. From what he said the other day about needing more time to discuss the plays, it sounds like he might not have a full grasp of the offense as well.

  • MDBuff:

Do you think Josh Smith is really upset with his lack of opportunities, or was it more just a matter of letting off some steam after a loss? I like J-Fly, but he's also had a lot of miscues.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think Josh wants to be really good and he believes he needs the ball in his hands more to get there. There is some truth to that, but he probably needs to do a better job preparing for the games both mentally and physically.

  • FlatironsBuff:

    Hi Kyle,

Any sense of what Hawk was talking about when he said things were playing out "behind the scenes" with Josh Smith that were keeping him from being on the field more?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I really couldn't say. That could be a wide range of issues.

  • FlatironsBuff:

Why do you think there have been no real pleasant surprises this year? It seems like no player has gotten better (and some seem to have gotten worse), and the only player who has exceed expectations is Speedy--a true freshman. Where is the player development?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Really? I'm not sure you're looking hard enough. I'd say Curtis Cunningham has been a pleasant surprise. Heck, what about Tyler Hansen. Did anyone see him playing this year? Shaun Mohler is playing pretty well. I do think your wider point about player development has some merit. But I would say Cha'pelle Brown is a player developed by this staff. Jalil Brown is coming along. So is Anthony Perkins. Nate Soldere has a bright future. If he ever gets on the field, Markques Simas will, too. Josh Smith is also a player developed by this staff. He still has a huge upside.

  • MDBuff:

What led to the big plays in the 3rd quarter vs A&M? How come the Buffs haven't made better adjustments in the second half like their opponents did?

    • Kyle Ringo:

One of the big plays was a total meltdown by the defensive front seven. Just got totally washed out to one side and allowed a long run. Two of the touchdown passes were simply nice plays made by the Aggies. However, they were freshmen and sophomore Aggies.

  • Buffaloed:

Why don't they use the "I" and play to Scott's strength instead of a offense they seem to be incapable of running?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Well, they apparently don't feel like they can block the I-formation real well up front. That's just a guess. But an educated one. If coaches believed something would help them win, they would do it. Period.

  • MDBuff:

Do you agree with Neill's opinion that the Buffs should stick with one QB rather than platoon? Also, has Neill EVER picked the Buffs to lose?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Neill has never picked the Buffs to lose in something like that past 12 years. As for whether they should stick with one QB. Well, this offenses problems have never been about one guy, but I do sort of think if you're going to burn a kid's redshirt, you should probably put it all on him and see how he handles it.

  • MDBuff:

What do you think is the likelihood the Buffs pull off 2 of the next 3 to become bowl eligible? 50%?

    • Kyle Ringo:

      I'll just say it's unlikely.

  • MDBuff:

Did C-Hawk or Hansen stand out at all to you? How do they make decisions on which one to insert? Is it by play calling or a gut feeling?

    • Kyle Ringo:

They both looked about the same to be in terms of effectiveness. I think it's mostly about situation and play call and a little bit about gut feeling. For instance, I expected to see Cody come in for the final drive, but they stuck with Hansen.

  • BuffTime:

Have you seen any bright spots on the scout team that might be good news for next year?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Sure. I think Bryce Givens will be tough to keep off the field. Jon Major and Lynn Katoa ought to be good. Steven Hicks has a future. And the guy I have no doubt about is Ray Polk.

  • BuffTime:

    Hi Kyle,
Do you think any of the assistant or position coaches are on Hawk's hot seat? Or do you think he is giving them somewhat of a pass due to the age and injuries of the team?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I don't think any of them are getting a pass, and I don't think any are on the hot seat.

  • NebraskansForColorado:

    Hi Kyle,

Do we think we will win this weekend, I know of course you never can know but do you have a gut feeling about the response this team will have this weekend?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I'm not real sure yet. So I'll hold off. I definitely think the Buffs can win this game and probably should. But will they...

  • BuffTime:

Have you noticed any friction or camaraderie among the RBs on the team? Do they all pull for each other or is it heated competition?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Probably a little of both. Some are closer than others. I haven't seen any friction.

  • vkberlinn:

    Hey Kyle,

Hope you are holding up. The qb deal is intersting. As per your subheadline.
"Hawkins, Hansen producing similar results on field"

Why wouldn't they just make the Hansen decision and go?

"The coaches saw something?" There appears to be no offense identity and I believe this is key.

    Just looking for your opinions

    • Kyle Ringo:

The lack of an offensive identity is a very good point, but I don't think these coaches can do what they want to do because they can't get it blocked consistently

  • Buff_bronc_fan:

Kyle, any word of a kicker in the 09 recruiting class? Any other potential commitments or recent visits worth noting?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I've heard coaches are looking at several kickers, but I also believe they think they will be fine with the two they have eventually. No new commitments yet. They are still finalizing who visits this week.

  • BuffTime:

How did Jameson Davis get a concussion? Hadn't heard about it until the article today. How does a kicker get a concussion?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yes, he did. We had it in the Sunday paper. Anyway, he got hit hard on kickoff coverage. He will be OK. No history of concussions. Just bad knees

  • Ralphie2:

    Kyle,

How many more seasons will Bohn put up with not winning?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Two. Then he would have to do something. I don't think it will come to that.

  • MDBuff:

Do you think Texas Tech, Alabama and Penn State will remain undefeated? I would love to see that doomsday scenario so that an undefeated team gets shut out of the title game, which could then push toward a plus one playoff.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think Penn State has the best chance of those three. I do think Boise State and maybe Ball State will also go undefeated.

  • MDBuff:

What do you think of Woody Paige's unorthodox suggestions to bring Hypolite into the backfield in short yardage situations, or use Chapelle as a WR?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I like the idea of using Hypolite. He was a fullback in high school. But I don't know why Maurice Cantrell can't do that. Cha'pelle playing wide receiver might be counterproductive and hurt the defense if he is tired.

  • BuffTime:

How far behind would you say Ballenger is compared to Cody/Tyler in the passing game and Hansen in the running threat?

    • Kyle Ringo:

He is a considerable distance behind Hansen as a runner, and that might be why Hansen is playing and he is not. I think Cody is still ahead of both the younger guys in the passing game, but Cody looks really bad because the blocking isn't there for him to execute.

  • BuffTime:

Some posters have taken the "Scott and Smith want more carries" article to mean that there is dissension among the players. Is that your feeling and the gyst behind the article?

    • Kyle Ringo:

No. People are sort of ridiculous sometimes and read things the way they want to read them. You could read that as two really competitive guys who just want to help their team win. It's all in the perspective. I think they both just want to win.

  • MDBuff:

Any concern by the coaching staff that we only have 5 commits thus far? How do you think it will play out?

    • Kyle Ringo:

If there is, they are never going to say so. I would imagine they would like to have more at this point.

  • Saheeb:

With Hawkins' belittling you as an "aspiring journalist," and the Smith/Scott public gripes about not getting the ball enough, is there some dissension mounting? Some idiots on the message board are taking Scott/Smith's comments to a crazy degree -- like they're about to transfer or something. Is there just frustration, or any real grumbling and finger-pointing behind the scenes?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I honestly don't get that feeling. And I didn't feel like Hawkins belittled me. Just a poor choice of words.

  • lobobuff:

Any idea why they jumped over Ballenger and burned Hansen's redshirt? Is Ballenger really having problems picking up this offense?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think it was probably more about Hansen's ability to make plays on the run than anything.

  • Ralphie2:

    Kyle,

How do you think having Chauncy back in Colorado will help coach Bzzz in recruiting?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Wow, a basketball question. That's awesome. I'll say this. It won't hurt. But there are rules that will limit how Billups could be involved.

  • MDBuff:

How's Eugene Goree progressing on the O line?

    • Kyle Ringo:

He's back to playing defensive line full time now.

  • BuffTime:

    O-Line
    WRs
    QB play

What percentages would you put the passing game troubles to each of those?

    • Kyle Ringo:

      Good question.

      I'd say

      O-Line 40 percent
      Wide receivers 30 percent
      QBs 30 percent

  • MDBuff:

What do you think of Pelini making his players unavailable to the media after they lost to OU? Has Hawk ever made his players off limits? How's the Buffs' psyche after the latest loss?

    • Kyle Ringo:

They really seem to be about the same as usual to me. These coaches like it that way and preach that. Sometimes I think that they need to be a little down and out about times like these. But, what do I know?

I think making players off limits after a game, particularly a loss is chicken----. I think he let them off the hook. Hawkins hasn't done that.

  • Ralphie2:

    Kyle,

Why does the state of Nebraska suck so bad?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Am I supposed to supply the punchline here?

thanks for participating tonight everyone. Come back next week.
