Questions

  • WABUFF:

    Good evening Kyle,
The Buffs seem to be lowering the bar when it come to offers to recruits. Are we in the running for even a four star recruit? What happened with Diante Jackson? Do you feel any recent visitors are favoring the Buffs?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Good evening and thanks for joining me.

I wouldn't say they're lowering the bar. They have about seven or eight spots to fill in what will be a pretty small class and they are trying to fill it with some high-level talent. They've been patient hoping to land some top-rated talent late in the process. Guys usually want to take their visits and all. But they do have to get some guys in the fold, and I think they have taken some guys based on potential. It's dangerous for fans to put too much stock in what a recruiting service might think. Much of the time, the guys doing the ratings for those services aren't much more qualified to do so than you or me.

  • BuffTime:

There has been quite a lot of chatter on the boards today regarding the article about Hawk not promoting the NU game as a rivalry. Part of what has made this game so fun to watch is that both teams put up a big fight and play with emotion. What is the vibe of the team going into this game? Is it really "just another game" or are they amped to beat the Huskers?

    • Kyle Ringo:

You know, it figures that on the day I that we publish that story, the scout team shows up in red jerseys and taped up helmets again. I do think the players' comments spoke volumes about the different approach to the game and how it has changed, and I think I will leave it at that. I don't know that one is better than the other. I know if comes off looking like coach Hawkins doesn't care as much about the game, and I don't think that's true. He just believes in his approach, which is play every game the same way, and prepare for every game with the same intensity.

  • BuffTime:

It is precisely the level of intensity (on the sidelines anyway) that has rubbed some fans the wrong way. Personally I prefer the intensity to be on the field but I have to admit that I do like to see a pumped up team yelling support from the sidelines for their teammates on the field.

What is your impression of the attitude and energy level on the sidelines during games?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I think the players' intensity is just fine. I don't really have a problem with an all-business approach. I think this team and coaching staff shows plenty of emotion on game days. That doesn't really strike me as an issue.

  • mgmtgrad:

    Kyle,

Speedy proves your last point. I seen the third year classes at a lot of programs end up being a smaller class; and those programs seem to due better becuase of it in year 5-7.

    What do you think?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Maybe in some cases that works out and in others it doesn't. I've really never studied it enough to form any kind of educated opinion about it.

  • BuffTime:

How much stock do you give to Hawk's pre-game statements about teams (or even post-game in some cases)? Is he mostly trying to eliminate any quotes that may be used as motivation by the other team? He seems to be on a much more mellow vie this year than the first 2 years. Not as many quotable moments it seems...

    • Kyle Ringo:

I would say that is true as far as not having as many quotable moments. I'm not sure that has been his plan. Really he has had two very similar teams this year and last and at some point there is only so much to say about them. It will be interesting down the road to view Hawkins during more positive times.

  • mgmtgrad:

"He just believes in his approach, which is play every game the same way, and prepare for every game with the same intensity."

The above is very true, very much against teams with losing records. But, last year game with OU and NU required some extra confidence by the coaches.

And they resulted in big wins.

    • Kyle Ringo:

I disagree. I think if you asked the players and the coaches about the preparation for those games, they would say it was very similar to others. I think the Fla. State disappointment fueled the OU win last year because the players believed they could compete at the highest level.

  • BuffTime:

Have you heard any rumblings regarding any recruits of interest? Has Diante Jackson backed off his excitement from his visit?

    • Kyle Ringo:

I've heard that Jackson is still very interested in coming to Colorado. He is just waiting to make absolutely sure before he announces his decision. There will be another 20-25 recruits who will visit before signing day and I'm sure plenty of them will be highly regarded. There are only about eight or nine scholarships left to give, so I don't think there is real need for concern.

  • IzzyWizzyBuff:

Does the staff have any plans to give Hansen some playing time on Friday?

    • Kyle Ringo:

Yes, Hawkins said Tyler will play this week. I think if one gets hot, they will probably stick with that guy a little bit.

  • MDBuff:

Are you going to have a chat after the football season? If not, maybe you could do it once a month?

So how are the Buffs looking in practice? They haven't had a real solid game from start to finish - will the extra time help them achieve this?

    • Kyle Ringo:

That's true. They are still looking for their best game. Maybe this will be it. I think they have looked pretty focused and energetic in practices I've been allowed to watch. Today practice was closed.

I do plan to continue to chat in the offseason, maybe a few times a week. We will work out the times later. But you can count on it.

  • MDBuff:

How does recruiting work exactly? Do the Buffs pursue a lot more guys than they can offer scholarships to? For example, if the Buffs try to get a 4 star recruit, and then he doesn't sign on signing day, do they look toward the less desireable ones that they've already been pursuing?

    • Kyle Ringo:

That is exactly how it works. They probably bring an average of 45 maybe 50 kids to campus for official visits every year hoping to sign between 18 and 25 depending on the number of available scholarships.

Thanks for joining me tonight everyone. talk to you next week.
