Buffs' Marshall named to watch list

Colorado junior Nikki Marshall on Tuesday was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, the highest honor presented in college soccer.

Marshall was one of 47 players nominated for the award. She became the second Buff in program history to be nominated, joining Fran Munnelly.

It's not her first honor of the preseason.

Marshall has already been named to the preseason All-Big 12 First Team.

"Nikki has continued to surprise us so far in her career," CU soccer coach Bill Hempen said in a press release. "Anything is possible for the kid, and we're really proud of her."

The Skyline High School graduate has led the Buffs in scoring her first two seasons at CU. She scored nine goals last year.

The Hermann Trophy Watch List was selected by Division I head coaches who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Colorado begins its season at home on Friday in a 4 p.m. match with No. 20 Florida and hosts Denver at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Tolan barely alive

at U.S. Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Colorado senior golfer Derek Tolan remained barely alive in the U.S. Amateur on Tuesday.

Tolan tied with 25 others at five-over 145. The 26 players will compete for two qualifying spots in a playoff.

BYU junior Robbie Fillmore, meanwhile, shot 5-under 65 to win the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Amateur.

The 26 competitors in the playoff is the second most in Amateur history, eclipsed only by the 31 players in 1988.

The playoff round begins today.

Fillmore leads the group of 64 players who will start the match-play portion, which also begins today.
