Trio of Buffs tight ends learning together
Junior Devenny mentoring Deehan, Pericak, Wallace
College football coaches are prohibited by NCAA rules from spending any time on the practice fields with players at this time of year, which forces veterans into a role as player-coach when newcomers join the team for summer workouts.

Junior tight end Patrick Devenny finds himself in that boat now that three highly recruited true freshmen have arrived at his position.
Will Pericak, Ryan Deehan and Ryan Wallace all remained on the field after most their new teammates had gone home Thursday night to get some tips from Devenny, who will go into training camp next month as the projected starter following a solid spring.
Devenny has been in the program for three years -- two at tight end -- but he has slightly more experience than the trio of freshman. Devennyhas played in a total of six games, all last season, and has one catch to his credit. Those facts combined with the season-long suspension of junior Riar Geer, open up the possibility of a lot of playing time for the greenhorns.
"I think I'm going to have a lot of fun here and all the guys are really great," said Wallace, a product of Bowling Green, Ky., who arrived in Boulder on Sunday. "They're all really willing to help you and not afraid to give you a pointer, which is good and what we need cause we don't know the whole system yet."
Deehan was the highest rated of the bunch by recruiting experts who gave him four stars. He played four seasons for his father at Poway High School in Poway, Calif., and went undefeated as a senior, but he said he might be the least likely to play right away because he weighs only 230 pounds. Wallace and Pericak are noticeably bigger.
Deehan initially committed to Louisville last year but switched to CU. He is happy he made that choice because of what he calls a "true team atmosphere" in Boulder. He has participated in two seven-on-seven workouts this week as he tries to learn hand signals, pass routes and the names of his teammates.
"Right now I'm really hesitant in my routes because I don't know where to read and where to break and all that stuff," Deehan said. "I mean, you can't be hesitant with that stuff when camp comes around so I've got three weeks here to learn what I'm doing."
Deehan said his best asset is being able to pick up things quickly and his knowledge of the game. He has watched hundreds of hours of film with his father the past four years and said he believes his understanding of the game will help him.
Pericak, a three-star recruit from Boulder High School, might be the most likely to see early playing time because of how much time he has already spent around the program. He was able to watch nearly every spring practice and begin to learn the offense and the hand signals.
He also has logged more hours in the offseason workout program and has gained a solid 10 pounds of muscle since the end of his high school basketball season.
Pericak said he is excited about the possibility of playing early and the versatile role of the tight end in CU's offense.
"You're going to be down blocking," Pericak said. "You're going to be out in a wide receiver stance going for the deep ball, too. Anything is possible and that's kind of why I love it so much."
They have only spent a few days around each other, but the three new tight ends have already began to develop a friendship and camaraderie.
"It's neat cause you have two other guys who are in your same situation," Wallace said. "You're not by yourself and you can all help each other."
Notable
Freshman offensive linemen Ryan Dannewitz and Max Tuioti-Mariner were at Thursday evening's seven-on-seven session being tutored by teammates such as Ryan Miller, Matt Bahr and Ethan Adkins. ... Freshman running back Rodney Stewart said his first month at CU hasn't been what he expected. "The workouts are tough, man," Stewart said. "It's not what I'm used to." ... Wide receiver Jason Espinoza emerged from spring practices as a favorite to earn the punt return job. Espinoza spent much of Thursday's session catching punts from Matt DiLallo. ... Cameron Wright, a quarterback from Ralston Valley High School and Guy Sargent a linebacker from Fountain-Fort Carson, have joined the program as preferred walk-ons. ... And finally, no Darrell Scott sightings.

uh ooh! Deehan was coached by pops! Another sign of nepotism!
Stewart- Want to see you play!
Why is there not a scott sighting? he better be in boulder before august! Or else he will be the one to redshirt!
Uncomfortable that hes not in the mix yet

Does anybody know why he's not in Boulder?
When do recruits have to report?

Scott was supposed to get into Boulder tonight.
And Kyle- It was Wallace that originally committed to Louisville- not Deehan.

Scott could just be fashionably late. He could also believe that he will be able to play catch up, so why not enjoy the summer. Let's just hope that it's not the later. Between Pitman, the altitude, and the dedication of the players, he could be in for a rough awakening.

The Espinoza kid may turn into another great story.
Hopefully with a better long term outcome than Maiawa. He definitely entertained in the spring game.

Some unsubstantiated rumor about Scott needing to finish a summer school course (?) which is confusing since qualifying was never brought up as a potential issue with him . Probably nothing to it. Same rumor reported regarding Mariner and Rippy.
The same guy feeding that info claims that 5 Star Randall Carroll is coming for a visit in August and that Scott has been trying to lure 5 star's Vontaze Burfict and and Shaq Evans.
All of it seems a little too much to not be posted on other, legit websites. So Im going to assume some sensationalism and wait it out.
for all we know, Scott is just enjoying his summer.

Kyle,
Deehan did not originally commit to Louisville and was not coached by his father. You have him mixed up with Ryan Wallace. You are correct that Deehan was the highest rated TE in the class.

Scott's mother has not found her job at a Denver bank yet, but he'll be in Boulder as soon as it's finalized.

Well Talli boy, NU lost another recruiting battle today. So much for any positive momentum from getting that verbal from an injury prone QB with limitied potential as a passer.
Top rated CB, Osahon Irabor, committed to ASU over Nebraska. Can't hardly blame the guy for not wanting to play on a defense that gives up 70+ points to the likes of Kansas and Texas Tech. I'll submit the Black Shirts were able to hold Colorado in the mid 60 point range twice in the last few years.
This makes Bo P 1 for 36 on landing his top recruiting targets for the 2009 class. At this rate, NU will be lucky to finish in the top 50 classes of 2009. Restore the Order? Salli… it’s time to admit that losing recruiting battles to the likes of ASU, Oklahoma St and Missouri is the Order moving forward in Lincoln.

Talli is right…we need more DB’s especially ones that rob people by gunpoint. I can’t believe we let Williams slip away – so sad.

interesting
these bozos have OU at 12-0, Tech and the horns and both 10-2. So that means the TX schools only lose to OU and one loses to the other.
Good luck with that one.
I see Mack coming out on the short end of that conflagration. In fact, unless Mack starts winning at least the Big 12 a few more times I see him following Carr and Calahan down the road a lot sooner (pun?) than a lot might think.
Posted by archalon on July 11, 2008 at 10:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Texas is a young team this year, they'll have some missteps somewhere. Tech always loses a game or two they should win, so count on at least 3 losses there.
OU will do fine until they have to play a full four quarters - reference CU game 2007.
All 'experts' combined have no reasonable clue what will happen. Kids havent even put pads on yet. Quite reading all the expert picks, its a waste of time.

Nebraska stinks.

What are the odds Pericek stays at TE? Looks more like a LB to me. When Geer comes back next year and Deehan is up to 255, I would be shocked if Will is still playing O - I think his future is at LB.

arch - interesting tidbits about Scott & co. I hope your "source" is only half correct. Not excited about the school issues, but those are some big name recruits, and would be HUGE gets if it's true.
I don't care if Scott doesn't show up until the night before the CSU game...he might be the best recruiter in the program.

Great, the more talented backs the better. Glad Polk is here. We're going to have several years of the 1-2 punch running over and through Bo's pathetic defense.
Bo stinks.

Talli, you're got some excuses for the dozens of other recruits that have spurned a chance for early playing time at Nebraska to sign at places like Rutgers, USC, OU and South Florida?
Try this excuse, because it’s the most accurate. Recruits today have many many better options than playing in Lincoln.
Fusker fans will run Bo P out of town after he goes 5-7 and 4-8 over the next two seasons anyway. Most of the talent Callahan recruited has transferred, graduated (jucos) or miserably failed to live up to expectations. The reason the black shirts are terrible is because the talent is not there. And now Bo P can’t drum up enough interest to bring back the talent. He can’t even get the best local boys on board. Ouch!

Nebraska is no longer the marquis destination for recruits it once was. The only way to get kids to play in Lincoln is if they are consistently competing for championships. NU hasn't been competetive for years, so recruits go elsewhere.
So many other schools have a lot more going for them (location, weather, academics, national exposure, the beach, good campus life, etc.) and Nebraska has none of these things. Seriously, if you were Bo what would your pitch to recruits be?? "We used to be a really good team"...that's about all they can offer. Most 18 year olds don't remember Tom Osborne, and the ones that do just don't care.
A kid can pick a school because they think they'll win championships, or because of the great environment. Nebraska offers neither. Seriously why would you go there...seriously?
Posted by dabuffs50 on July 11, 2008 at 12:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)
who the hell would want to live in Lincoln? That place is a straight up dump.
Posted by archalon on July 11, 2008 at 12:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
......From first hand knowledge,in some respects Lincoln is not a bad place - I spent several fun years there behind enemy lines.
But overall, there is not much of anything there. Either way, really, who cares about NU ? Why does everyone continue to discuss it ? NU is a non-threat in the foreseeable future. If kids want to go there or here, so be it.
The DScott UT or CU debate changed my opnion quite a bit. If kids want to go to CU, great. If not, they obviously arent a good fit. Let em be.

Pelini's first class was 30th??? You're joking, how many recruits actually committed after Bo got hired? How many did they lose? Those were Cally's (and to some extent TO's) recruits. Don't give Bo credit for that class.
Posted by baBUFF on July 11, 2008 at 12:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)
A lot of schools have facilities, and many more have won championships more recently. Do you think kids care that NU won championships in the 80s and 90s? No. You need something more to offer than a bunch of dusty trophies. Tradition is great, but if that's all Nebraska has to offer, how can they compete with Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Miami, LSU - those schools all have tradition...and they win games. Nebraska, not so much. Good luck Bo.

There was a story on this site earlier in the summer that Darrell Scott already qualified.
Posted by baBUFF on July 11, 2008 at 1:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
32nd was better than Barnett did for years, despite a 2-10 record. He then followed it up with a top 20 class in 2008.
If Nebraska ever goes 2-10, watch their class drop into the low 60s.

not to mention our fairweather fanbase virtually deserted the team prior to the trip to Lincoln and the Big-12 championship (ISU should take some blame since they should have taken the north title that year).

Clearly, Nebraska fans have little to do so they spend their time maligning the players of other teams (see despicable behavior of a Husker fan detailed below) and they spent their time visiting the forums of other schools so someone will pay attention to them. Associated Press: 'Father of QB plans legal action over hoax ' - OKLAHOMA CITY- "The father of an Oklahoma quarterback says he plans legal action against a Nebraska football fan who posted a bogus story on an Internet message board claiming two Sooners had been arrested on cocaine distribution charges." http://www.buffzone.com/news/2008/jul.... The father going after him is Landry Jones's dad, the kid who nearly came to CU. On a related note, can we all please just stop reacting to the Buffaloe turd "Tall" and get the threads here back to exchanging intelligent, thought-provoking insights and info about the almighty Buffs!?

Part of my posting from the QB story below:
Talley boy posted an article on today's story regarding NU’s great sport facilities.
When you only have one franchise in the state and it's the local college, I guess all of their money can go to that.
But what do the rest of the non-student athletes do? How many non athletes come from out state for a great education at NU like CU?
I think the answers to those questions say a lot about the school and some of their hard core fans.
Sad, sad, sad.

CU is absolutely one of the greatest places in the world. For everyone of us it was a fantastic four (or five!) years - but CU certainly isn't a top tier academic institution - and I'm glad it isn't.

So let me guess, WhosYourDaddy lived off of his daddy's money.
I went to CU. I partied (a lot), but I still went to almost every single class I had and I graduated with a double major in 4 years. I could have graduated early but I wanted the second major (plus a minor). Not everyone who went to CU is a slacker. Regardless of how many bong hits you happened to have done there were still a large percentage of your classmates who actually learned something. CU has long had a strong Physics and Engineering department and has an overall very high level academically. But I guess you wouldn't know that since your were too drunk or stoned. From most of your posts here I'm guessing not much has changed for you.

SO IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO KNOW THE STATUS OF OUR MAIN MAN DARRELL SCOTT AND HIS FEELINGS COMING INTO BOULDER:
I recently added Mr Scott to my Facebook page and he accepted it and he came online, so I had the opportunity to chat with Darrell for like half an hour or so about everything CU and his status and what not. Here is what I found out and here is what DS is all about:... very cool to pass along to you guys:
First: He says he has been working out all summer and just learning the offensive playbook (while not in Boulder).
Second: He is officially going to arrive in Boulder tomorrow (Wednesday, July 16).
Third: He says he thinks the CU offense, including the No-huddle, shotgun style is "tight". So he loves the Offense.
Fourth: He says while he is in Boulder he just wants to lay low and stay out of trouble. He says he doesn't like to get crazy like some of them do or have done already. That's good.
Fifth: A DS quote: "yeah I'm so ready to get this thing going already. wish the CSU game was tomorrow lol. god I can't wait" So he is excited for the season, as we all should be.
Sixth: I told him he needs to come up with some kind of a salute or hand gesture everytime the Rams chase him into the endzone for a score LOL.. he likes that idea.
Seventh: Then I asked him why he chose CU overall and also what other games he is looking forward to... DS quote: "just the relationship I had with coach Hagan, The great offical visit I had, and the games I'm looking forward to are WV,TX,and FSU"
FINALLY: He says they are going to beat Nebraska this year, no doubt, but he isn't going to get into the whole rivalry with them yet "at this point". Then he finally said he just wants to see the crowd be really into the game and loud and that's what he FEEDS OFF OF.
Let me know what you guys thinks of this. GO BUFFS! Darrell is a very nice guy, is really excited to be playing for CU, he seems real dedicated, and should be a great addition to the program, personality wise and of course, athletic ability.
