Mohler ready to join Hawkins' Buffs
Junior college linebacker still must be cleared to play by NCAA, university
Another four-star member of Colorado's 2008 football recruiting class arrived in Boulder early Friday afternoon, overcoming long odds to get here.
Linebacker Shaun Mohler, the only junior college player in the class, completed 25 hours of course work at Orange Coast College in California in the past six months in order to become academically eligible to play at CU.
Mohler still must be cleared by the new NCAA Eligibility Center -- it replaced the NCAA Clearinghouse this year -- and the CU office of admissions before he can count himself as fully qualified member of the team. But he has completed the biggest part of the process by finishing seven classes in six months.
"I'm excited and glad to get it over," Mohler said.
Mohler was recruited to play the same position at which former linebacker Jordon Dizon excelled the past four years. At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds with two years of experience at the college level, Mohler might be the most likely newcomer at linebacker to see immediate playing time.
Mohler has three years to use his two remaining seasons of eligibility, but he wasn't ready to talk about playing time and how he might fit in to the mix on his first day on campus.
"I'm just trying to learn the play book right now," he said.Back from the jungle
Quarterback Cody Hawkins raved about the family trip to Peru when he returned to player-organized practices this week. The Hawkins family visited South America last week during the Fourth of July holiday break when players were given the week off from strength and conditioning sessions.
Hawkins said visiting Machu Picchu, also known as "the lost city of the Incas" was "the most incredible experience of my life." The family was able to spend the night at Machu Picchu and woke early the next morning to hike to a vantage point to look down on the city.
Hawkins said the family also spent time in the middle of the jungle sleeping in huts with no electricity. Cody Hawkins said he and his younger brother, Drew, shared one hut located just a few hundred feet from a large nest of tarantulas.
He compared the spider nest to the ant hill in the most recent Indian Jones movie, "only it was hundreds of tarantulas," he said.
Hawkins said the family also visited the San Francisco Church in Lima, Peru, and ventured into the catacombs beneath, which are filled with the skeletal remains of thousands.
Voice from the past
Former Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt is somewhat removed from the program two years after his final game, but he keeps close tabs on the Buffs in his role as an analyst for Fox Sports Net.
Klatt believes the Buffs have a bright future under coach Dan Hawkins and he expects the team to improve this season.
"I'm very excited for everybody up there," he said. "With the job that the coaching staff has done in recruiting, I think they are definitely headed in the right direction and on a one-way road to success in the Big 12.
"It will be hard for them, obviously, to replace guys like (Terrence) Wheatley and (Jordon) Dizon on the defensive side of the ball, but they're going to be very tough."
Notable
CU coach Dan Hawkins along with members of his staff and selected players will conduct "Football 101 for Women" for the third consecutive season on July 30 at the Dal Ward Center and Folsom Field. The cost of the four-hour clinic is $50 with proceeds donated toward women's athletic teams. Coaches will teach all the basic components of the game and the CU program to participants at different stations. ... For the first time since he was hired in April 2005, Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn has been unavailable this week while enjoying a vacation with his family.

Welcome aboard Mr. Mohler!

Big ups to Mr. Mohler busting his *** with extra courses to overcome CU's JUCO requirements. Most kids would have taken the easy way out and walked into kNU or most any other D1 program without taking the extra credits.
Very impressive.

I think he will play this year. No red shirt for him.

Great job! Welcome to the Buff Nation! On a completely unrelated note, I hate Gary B. I just realized that Colt Brennan could have been our starting QB...if not for the incident.

Kimolukela: Your "hatred" is misplaced. Colt Brennan brought his dismissal on himself with an act that even the most passionate Buff would not condone. Gary Barnett deserves our praise for dealing with it in a straightforward and ethical manner.

on a completely unrelated note. for all of you wondering why D-Scott wasn't in boulder yet on another thread.... i got confirmation and a good friend of mine saw D-Scott with his uncle yesterday in boulder... HE'S HERE BABY LET THE A** WHIPPING BEGIN.. WELCOME TO BOULDER MR. SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree Odog, I just read article on SI.com regarding a player choosing ASU over a college with harder admissions requirement. Mike Stoops even called his school a Juco school.
Congratulations to Shaun Mohler for being a real man with an understanding of the big picture and working so hard. He has the qualities of a player, a student and is the type of young men CU wants to have in the program.
I’m proud that CU doesn't lower its academic requirements just to get better athletes and are still improving as a competitive team. CU plays against teams with great athletes that are made of both Juco and high school students that wouldn’t qualify to get into CU.
And CU’s strength of schedule makes it all the more exciting.
I can’t wait for more news and for the season to begin.

Guys,
On a different note check out the story in other football on DC buffzone page regard a husker fan being sued for a stupid prank and rub in tallyboys face if he shows up any time soon.
It is a very interesting read.

kimo,
Colt Brennan made a very poor choice and it was even worse that he did it during a time that CU was under the microscope for those kind of actions. Barnett showed class and integrity by dismissing him.
BTW, there is no garuntee that Colt Brennan would have been as good at CU than he was at Hawaii. Time will tell in the NFL if his success was the result of the system he was in or if he was truly talented. But I am almost positive he was better than Joe Cox.

Colt had real promise, which made it all the more respectable that Barnett cut him off after the incident came to light. He was a promising QB for sure. Colt messed up big time and he knows it. He paid his due and then went on to Hawaii and his success there. He made a big mistake but he paid for it and apologized to the young lady in question (that is what I read anyway). Questions of his past at CU came up in several interviews and articles about him once he garnered more spotlight and he handled it like a man and admitted that he did what he did even though he says he does not remember the incident due to the alcohol that he was extremely drunk from while at the same time he says that not remembering it is no excuse. In fact he offered no excuse and accepted that he messed up and paid his dues.

I agree with MarcusJ about CU continuing to honor academics by keeping admission standards high. I like the fact the CU chooses to keep the UNIVERSITY in the University of Colorado. And while I am no fan of heavily recuiting JC players (ala Bill Snyder), this pick-up for the Buffs should be solid. When ever CU can pick up a kid from a So. Cal JC like Orange Coast or Saddleback, chances are they are going to get, not only a kid who knows how to play football, but they are also more likely than not going to get a kid how can stay on top of their school work (P.T. Gates being the exception, not the rule).
As a So. Cal high school teacher very familiar to both JC's, I can tell you that the course work at these schools is rigorous, and that both of the schools mentioned above do an excellent job getting their kids to move on to major, reputable univiversities all over the state and country (please note the University of California system boasts admission standards every bit as hard as CU).
My point being, that I am excited to have Shaun Mohler in a Buff uniform. I have seen this kid play and he's got some skills.
GO BUFFS!!

Marcus, Thanks the heads up on the article. I had to search ths DC website for it, but it was worth it. Those crazy bugeaters.
I wonder if that Conradt guy, posts on this board under names like Dr. Tom, tallisall, whosyerdaddy, etc....
I guess that would go a long way toward his conspicuous absence.

I'm not saying that Colt made a bad choice. Barnett was a disaster for the program. If you truly believe that he contributed to the Buff legacy, you are completely delusional.

Great work Mohler!
Posted by flabuff227 on July 13, 2008 at 11:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't believe Barnett was a Disaster for the program. I think that the accusatiions brought towards the program, Was the true disaster(witch hunt brought forth by mary keenan). It killed recruiting, with the self imposed resrictions. Barnett was the scapegoat! And yes i know he made it worse with the comments towards hnida, but He was speaking the truth. At that point he was already fed up and hnida was adding fuel to the fire.
In My opinion Neuheisel was the true disaster,if you wanna blame a coach.Who in their right mind lets a girl play on a college football team.call me sexist, but its not possible. we are all quick to blame barnett. at least, barnett could develop talent.
I believe barnet was defending the program against people like rs and the far left mentality.
Posted by flabuff227 on July 13, 2008 at 11:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)
BTW- Neuweasel wasn't a disaster just because he put a girl on scholarship. Thats only 1% of the reason.

Til' This day, Barnett defends the program. " I believe the program was held hostage by this lawsuit". He may, or may not have, contributed to the legacy. I know one thing, he tried too. Most of all, he believed in it. I guess Thats my point.

I liked Barnett. He got a raw deal and did the university a service transitioning from the criminal to the Hawk.
Don't forget that he booted anyone and everyone from the team who got out of line, whereas the criminal, the senator from Nebraska, and multiple others coached in this game choose to take the "innocent until the season ends" approach.
Posted by extrapoint on July 14, 2008 at 9:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Barnett was unjustly accused in the manufactured scandal. If I was catching it, again, unjustly, like he did, it would have sapped me of motivation as well.
Although he was a good coach, I doubt if he could have taken the Buffs all the way. He was way too conservative in his game plans and was not a top 20 recruiter.

Barnett's flaws were ignorance, stubborness and a big mouth. The world has changed, CU has moved on, the rest of you should as well.
Why beat a dead horse ? it doesnt matter if he was good, bad or whatever. What does it matter what he won ? The program suffered on his watch. Let it go.
CU is in a much better position now

Thank Chris Simms for our Big12 Championship! If Major Applewhite starts that game, we lose by 40!
It all worked out, though. We've got the right coach in the right place at the right time. We have to be realistic about this season and look at 7-6 as a great year (with our schedule and still very, very young team). Next year, though, if we're not looking at 9 or 10 wins, I might have to join RS in his support of women's tennis!

marcus,
if your link is to the story of Nebraska fan James Conradt (aka theoreallyfactor) posting a fictitious story about the arrests of two OU players for selling cocaine, it got plenty of attention last Thursday or Friday... can't remember under which story (maybe the Polk piece?). It was about the same time shoulder outed Kenneth nee tallisall.

SO IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO KNOW THE STATUS OF OUR MAIN MAN DARRELL SCOTT AND HIS FEELINGS COMING INTO BOULDER:
I recently added Mr Scott to my Facebook page and he accepted it and he came online, so I had the opportunity to chat with Darrell for like half an hour or so about everything CU and his status and what not. Here is what I found out and here is what DS is all about:... very cool to pass along to you guys:
First: He says he has been working out all summer and just learning the offensive playbook (while not in Boulder).
Second: He is officially going to arrive in Boulder tomorrow (Wednesday, July 16).
Third: He says he thinks the CU offense, including the No-huddle, shotgun style is "tight". So he loves the Offense.
Fourth: He says while he is in Boulder he just wants to lay low and stay out of trouble. He says he doesn't like to get crazy like some of them do or have done already. That's good.
Fifth: A DS quote: "yeah I'm so ready to get this thing going already. wish the CSU game was tomorrow lol. god I can't wait" So he is excited for the season, as we all should be.
Sixth: I told him he needs to come up with some kind of a salute or hand gesture everytime the Rams chase him into the endzone for a score LOL.. he likes that idea.
Seventh: Then I asked him why he chose CU overall and also what other games he is looking forward to... DS quote: "just the relationship I had with coach Hagan, The great offical visit I had, and the games I'm looking forward to are WV,TX,and FSU"
FINALLY: He says they are going to beat Nebraska this year, no doubt, but he isn't going to get into the whole rivalry with them yet "at this point". Then he finally said he just wants to see the crowd be really into the game and loud and that's what he FEEDS OFF OF.
Let me know what you guys thinks of this. GO BUFFS!

Just getting there is half the battle. Now, he must continue to study, you know books and stuff, and keep his eligibility which he worked hard for. If he does, he'll have learned a valuable lesson. Welcome to the University of Colorado.
