Pitman Buffing up CU athletes

Strength, conditioning coach first needed to change culture at CU

When Jeff Pitman decided to uproot his family In Boise, Idaho, two years ago to come to Colorado and lead the strength and conditioning program, he had no idea what was in store for him.

Pitman found a program completely at odds with his "blood and guts" approach. The four other strength and conditioning coaches working under him at the time had different philosophies, making Pitman feel like he was "the Lone Ranger" at times in trying to institute changes.

He found a football team that had been beaten 70-3 in the Big 12 Conference championship game a few months earlier and the numbers it produced in the weight room told some of the story behind that epic defeat.

"There was definitely a culture shift that needed to take place," Pitman said.

Yet, the 37-year-old former college center said he might have had a more difficult time with the adjustment than anyone because after being at Boise for five years, he didn't have to force feed anyone.

"It was just kind of like the kids were robots," he said.

He began raising expectations and setting new standards immediately. He said when he put 300 pounds on a bar in the Dal Ward Center weightroom in the spring of 2006 and instructed football players to perform a power clean lift, some almost couldn't believe it. Only 11 actually succeeded.

A lot has changed in two years in the mentality of CU athletes, and not just those who play football. But the biggest change has probably come from the team Pitman works with most.

When football players were tested after spring practices in April, the entire team produced the best results Pitman has ever seen for any team he has coached.

Pitman said 50 players were able to power clean 300 pounds and he remains optimistic the Buffs can do better because the team is so young.

The Buffs have been successful at meeting the strength and conditioning staff's first priority which is keeping athletes fit and healthy and avoiding injuries.

They also are making steady progress toward reaching Pitman's ultimate goal. It was something he believed he was close to achieving when he left Boise State.

"I guess my deal is, and I kind of felt this way a little bit about Boise, is when we walk the team out on the field, there is almost a fear factor, like, 'Oh man, here comes the Buffs,'" Pitman said.

Most of the CU football team has returned to campus after having much of the month of May off, and the majority of the incoming recruiting class is expected to report for summer classes within the next two weeks.

Over the next two months, all of those players will toil under Pitman's tutelage in the weightroom and in early morning runs building strength and stamina for at least four months of football in the fall.

Pitman said there is a noticeable change in the program this year compared with his first summer in Boulder.

He said when players returned to campus this year and resumed workouts, there were no major bumps in the road. The seamless transition was "night and day" from two years ago and another sign for Pitman than the program has turned a corner.

"I think we're definitely well on our way to where we need to be and get to," Pitman said. "I'm feeling pretty happy about that."

Rings for men's track

CU athletic director Mike Bohn said the men's track and field team will receive Big 12 Conference Championship rings later this after winning the conference crown at the outdoor meet in Boulder two weeks ago.

Bohn said the department expects to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 on the rings, which would be in line with what the department has spent on rings for other conference championship teams in the past.

How did it get to this point? When Doc Kreis was at CU there was never any mention of a cultural deficit in the weight room. It reminds me of the stories you hear about the lacadasical attitude McCartney confronted on his arrival in Boulder. It's also a reminder that these are kids - if you don't demand hard work, most will take the easy way. The Neuheisel-Barnett erosion was quite comprehensive. Fortunately for UCLA they play in the Pac-10. In the Big XII we need the likes of Jeff Pitman.

excuses excuses.... do you want me to now say that you scored 50 points against a defensive line hurting and full of recuits brought in by barnett? and the last 14 points of yours were in slop time I do believe. sure "BO KNOWS DEFENSE" (so i hear) I hope he enjoys D-SCOTT, C-Hawk and the boys going buck wild on the pink shirts

"That's why Callahan is gone and Hawkins needs a lot of wins this season."

I don't get the sense that anyone's calling for Hawkin's head in Buffville. I think he'd be just fine after a 5-7 record this coming season(though I think we'll win eight this season...but what do I know).

But yes, Bo needs to win because expectations are different where people are validated entirely by events over which they have no control. Nice places like nebraska, oklahoma and Alabama (and Kentucky...but for a different sport)

I think Bo is a good fit for nebraska, but I don't believe he'll fix the D in one season...that's quite a bus to turn around (culture takes time--as pointed out in the above article). If I'm wrong and he does fix the D immediately, I suspect it will be at the expense of the remainder of the team. A head coach isn't a Defensive Coordinator, as I've said before; it's a different skill set.

IF the good people of nebraska give Bo five years he'll probably be just fine. However, the red-polyester clad inhabitants of America's heartland haven't exactly shown a lot patience this decade...

meyer, stoops, coker all went to programs that already had very good players. those are the dumb examples u are giving. its different when u dont have much to work with ie Randy shannon, nick saban.Remember these first year head coaches are inheriting a program. out of the progams that are supposed to compete every year for a title, meyer is the only one that is proven after the first year. Come with something better tal, moron

So tall, if your argument is that coaches should win from day 1, are you going to come on this site and call for Bo's job if he doesn't produce a winner this year, or will you be gutless and disappear again? I think I know the answer, but I want to hear it from you.

How many W's does Bo need this year to keep his job in your opinion?

I'm not sure where you're going with this tall is all.

On one hand you suggest that fans should give their coaches five years to turn a program around.

On the other you chide CU fans for doing just that.

Am I missing something?

The Arena Football League's Los Angeles Avengers have signed former Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Sam Keller to a three-year free-agent contract.

Keller set a school record at Nebraska last season by completing more than 63 percent of his passes in nine games for 2,422 yards and 14 touchdowns.

wow... scool record and only good enough for the arena football league???? TOP TEAR Talent baby!

Tal - at least Hawk has a D1 head coaching track record. Pelini's is 0-0. He has never been a head coach - not even a High School head coach. NU hiring a coach without ANY HC experience should be interesting.

"5-7 would be 3 consecutive seasons in how many decades??"

Does that sentence make any sense?

Trivia question: who won the Big XII football championship more recently, CU or Nebraska?

Trivia question #2: which institutions athletic teams (all sports) have won more national championships since 1996, CU or Nebraska?

Trivia question #3: which institution's football team has more Big XII football championship games since 2001?

walto_clown:

Your post at 2:47 PM is the most intelligent and insightful and posts about Nebraska football that I have read for quite some time. The usual comment on these boards is "Huskerz s**cks" or something equally "intelligent".

Absolutely Pelini is an unproven coach and he will get a couple of years to prove himself. If he does get a decent defense onthe field, NU goes 8-4 this year.

Hawkin's honeymoon period is officially over and if the writers on this board think another 7-5 or 6-6 year at CU is going to be acceptable....well, let's revisit all this in November and December. If CU goes 8-4 or 9-3 then Hawkins is the real deal and CU is back in the mix in the Big 12 and BCS picture.

As I have said before, the Big 12 North needs both NU and CU at full strength and regularly kicking the crap out of rest of the division and each other. Anything less than that is just Callahan and Barnett, Part II

Posted by MinnesotaBuff on June 2, 2008 at 9:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sorry, stoptheinsanity but you have to look at the facts here. The Buffs play a brutal schedule...top 10-20 for difficulty in the nation. He has brought in a top 30 and a top 20 recruiting class in his first 2 full cycles.

The culture Neuheisel and Barnett built at CU for complacency and mediocrity is changing. CU will be an improved team next year...but bottom line is that might not matter in the W-L. The Buffs will be underdogs in more than half their games.

6-6 is realistic in my opninion. And shouldn't mean the death stroke to Hawks career in Boulder.

Posted by extrapoint on June 2, 2008 at 10:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If Hawkins wins 9 this year, tall will have to be put on suicide watch.

He has to be either embarrasing Barney or Barney embarrasing himself. The Scottsdale bridge club just leaves too much time on his hands.

Posted by fortbuff95 on June 2, 2008 at 11:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with Minnesotabuff. Looking at this year's schedule 6-6 is probably realistic and 7-5 would show that the team is improving which would be key to having another good recruiting year.

However, 2009 is the year when expectations for the program will be sky high. I believe the Buffs should be 4-0 going into the conference schedule (and yes they should be able to handle West Virginia at their house since Pat White will have graduated and the team will be searching for a new identity after their leader and star player moves on). Then the rest of the conference schedule stacks up nicely for the Buffs with all of the toughest games being played at Folsom excluding the Texas game in Austin. 2009 will be the measuring stick for the future of the program and one in which the Buffs should be back in the Big XII title game.

"Your post at 2:47 PM is the most intelligent and insightful and posts about Nebraska football that I have read for quite some time."

Thank you, Stoptheinsanity. That means something coming from a person who certainly spends a lot of time on huskerpedia.

The negative comments aimed at the nebraska football program and its fans on this board tend to be solicited by overzealous huskers who leave their e-state boundaries to hurl insults at our program. I'm sure we have Buff fans who do the same. But really, I don't see a lot of "huskers s**kz" remarks. We must each have our own selective perception and sensitivities.

My point is, that though the dialogue isn't always high-minded (it is football, after all) I'm generally impressed with the fan behavior and insights on this board.

Again (to return to topic), based on various editorials, fan comments on this site, Allbuffs and Scout, I see no reason to suspect that the CU faithful are impatient with our head coach. Nothing like the girl in the youtube video. I think nearly everybody appreciates not only the change Coach Hawk is directing, but also the way he's going about it. It takes time, and I'd argue that the honeymoon isn't over.

Posted by rodrigo on June 3, 2008 at 7:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Bottom line: Dr. Tom, Tall and Stop are not and will never be the deciders of what does or does not constitute acceptable progress at CU. That they think they can is a sign of their own insecurity about the team they support, and that clearly isn't Colorado.

It's curious... each bemoans how he and his beloved Huskers are treated here. But as Walto points out, why on earth do they come in the first place? As a general rule I've yet to see Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Oklahoma or Texas fans drawn to buffzone to pound their chests and assert their relevance.

For folks who claim there is no rivalry, they sure spend a lot of time and mental energy attacking the Buffs.

Tall cites an article arguing that we are now in era where coaches are expected to win right away. I disagree. It might be true in Lincoln or Ann Arbor or Miami. But at other, shall we say more rational places where football isn't the be-all-end-all to community life, that simply isn't true.

How many years has Mike Stoops been in Tucson? How long will Gene Chizik last in Ames? Are they threatening to run Mike Gundy out of Stillwater? What was Mangino's year-three record at Kansas or Gary Pinkel's at Missouri?

In some places - saner places, I would argue - success is measured not only in wins but in progress... real, meaningful and sustainable improvement built year to year not engineered by desperate schemes to pile up wins at whatever the cost.

I'm absolutely stoked about the state of the CU football program. Like the vast, vast majority of posters here, folks I know in Colorado and other Buff alums around the country, I see big things on the horizon... maybe this year, quite likely next and beyond.

And all the bad-mouthing by our three amigos can do absolutely nothing to change that.

This is a tired topic discussed many times in other threads. But to clarify for tallisall: Hawkins is going nowhere.

No need to try and explain it to him. The real CU fans understand where this program is going - culture, recruting, community, expectations, on the field

CU maybe a year or two away from BCS, NU several more years than that and KU MU will begin to slide this season but still be tough for 2 more years. ISU is a non-factor and KSU is JC mediocrity.

The division is there for CU's taking with a few upsets this year, but it will be expected next year. It will be 2011 before CU\NU game has national implications.

tal- Where do you get your info? im sure most buff fans were excited when hawk was hired, i know i was. I dont think anybody in there right mind thought that he would come in and compete for a nc right away.

The fact of the matter is ,he does have a five year grace period.Everybody knows he inherited a mess. Quit saying that he has to win 9 games next year. You are not the athletic director,or a cu fan.

Stop pretending like you dont know that cu is heading in the right direction.

Prediction: I think the buffs will surprise a lot of people this year. if they do, im guessing you will not be on here anymore.

It took Mark Mangino and Gary Pinkel about 6 or 7 years before their teams suddenly exploded on the national scene this past season. Although I have an inkling that Hawk can do the same in less time, I am fully prepared to wait 7 years if need be. And so is Mike Bohn -- the only person (other than Hawk) who has a say in whether Hawk stays or leaves. Bohn recognizes the real situation and has publicly stated that it often takes 7 years to rebuild a football program. As an AD, Mike Bohn simply "gets it". He fully understands how difficult the rebuilding process can be. With Bohn and Hawk steering the ship, I have no worries at all.

Tall- If we were so bad last year, how do you explain beating oklahoma? how do you eplain hanging 65 on little red, so many points it made your little blow up butt butt buddy start to deflate. I will give you ISU and KSU as being bad loses. and I would hardly consider Alabama pitiful (7 point loss to LSU, 3 pt loss to Georgia, win agains tennessee.) If anything I would be more proud of the way we faught back against Bama. beating a team is one thing, but being down 28-0 and roaring back in the second half to fall just short shows true heart. its easy to fold a tent in that situation but the ones who truly bleed black and gold faught back and in my mind that was more impressive as stomping a team. I'm thinking D-Scott, Givins, Mohler, Major and the rest of our top 20 class thought the same thing.

All I'm going to say to the Nebraska fans is this:

You better be worried about the state of your own program. The mess that Bill Callahan left in Lincoln is going to take a lot of hard work. A coach with no previous head coaching experience is risky.

You better hope that Bo has an eye for talent as well. His recruiting efforts leave much to be desired. If he continues to keep bringing in sub-par recruits like he has for the 2009 class, you guys are in serious trouble. These kids are all BCS walk ons and not scholarship players... well maybe at a MAC school. And if you think I am exagerrating, just go on to any recruiting site and see what Nebraska fans are saying. They are not impressed.

For Buff fans: By the end of the month CU will land a few committs. A blue chip defensive end from Southlake Carrol Texas will be arriving in Boulder tomorrow.

It may be a little early and off subject, but has anyone noticed the quality of players that CU is recruiting this year? I have NEVER seen a list like that in CU history! We obviously will miss out on many of them, but when you are recruting that many quality guys, you are bound to land some, and with D. Scott on board we should be able to do just that. N. Kasa - follow the trend and stay in state - we need you!

Posted by baBUFF on June 3, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That's a fascinating article, and I'm sure Bohn will take it into consideration when he reviews the state of the program at the end of the season.

The article says at the end that Hawk WON'T be fired, so what's your point exactly? The following coaches are on the same site listed as MORE likely to be fired:

Charlie Weis
Ron Prince
Randy Shannon
Nick Saban
Rick Neuheisel
Gene Chizik

If the point is Hawk's job is safer than Chizik's or Neuheisel's, then it basically a guarantee he'll be back. Short of major recruiting violations or committing a felony, those guys are locks to be back.

I notice Bo is on the hot-seat list too and he hasn't even coached a game yet. How many W's does he need this year in this era "Win from Day 1" to keep his job tall?

Who's the "pundit" that writes this garbage, anyway? Tal's aunt?

Posted by baBUFF on June 3, 2008 at 11:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That's true, CU would NEVER fire a coach with a big buyout clause, I can't even remember the last time that happened...

If "First-Year coaches are expected to win right away" how many wins for Bo to keep his job? I suspect you'll never answer because you'd be a hypocrite if you said Bo needs 5 wins when you're calling for Hawks head after winning 6.

Posted by baBUFF on June 3, 2008 at 11:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

No chance they win 9. To get 9 you assume they have to beat CU, and at TX Tech. The 9th win comes from either VA Tech, Mizzou, Oklahoma, or Kansas - which of those do you really think Nebraska wins?

I'll give you 6 max. That would be the 3 JV teams in your ooc schedule, ISU, Baylor, and KSU...maybe.

Posted by MinnesotaBuff on June 3, 2008 at 11:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You are outrageous tall. You blow so much smoke you should work for Phillip Morris.

I'll give the Huskers over Western Michigan, San Jose State, New Mexico State and Baylor. It would be pathetic for the Fuskers to win only 2 legitimate games next year.

But if you want us to believe that the pink shirts can muster 5 wins over real opponents, you're kidding yourself.

Posted by baBUFF on June 3, 2008 at 11:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

They better win some of those games because tall will be calling for Bo's head if they don't get 7 wins because we all know that "First-Year coaches are expected to win right away".

At KSU will be a tough one for Bo, that's no lock either. KSU will have new starters all over the field since they no longer recruit high-school players - so a few of them will have to be upgrades.

Plus according to our new favorite website, Prince is on the "Hot Seat" this year too and will have to deliver some wins.

I didn't mind the article (the ever-changing location of the TX game aside).

1. Would you rather live in Nirvana, or in a flat depressing place that used to have a good football team?

2. The article simply established the expectation from a mostly rational perspective. Team dynamics seldom follow rational laws. As Northwest Buff has pointed out several times, it's the coaching staff's job to EXCEED those reasonable expectations.

3. I like the trends that Coach Hawk established and maintained at Willamette and Boise State. As Eddie Crowder said, in reference to Coach Hawk, the best indication of what a coach will do in the future lies in his past (paraphrased).

4. I think we might at least split games on that ugly four game stretch (WVU, FSU, TX, KU) and feel confident that we'll at least win one of them.

GO BUFFS!

Anyone seeing 9 wins in NU's future is seriously delusional. baBuff has a good analysis.

NU will teeter between 5 and 7 wins. They may go winless after Nov 1st. CU could get 6, could get 8. I hope for the latter but the schedule is tough

Either way, CU will get their W's against stiffer competition

Posted by archalon on June 3, 2008 at 1:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Remember: FSU and KU games last year could have been had with a more experianced team and a few playmakers.

Im pushing the chips in on the WVU game and travelling out for it. I really think that is a CU win, upsetting the critics who think they know better. FSU could stumble, but WVU is the comnig out party.

CU wins 3 of those Buff nation will be mighty proud

Have you looked at NU's non-con schedule Tall? It includes such juggernauts as New Mexico State.

You don't give Hawk's BSU teams credit for beating up on WAC opponents.

Where's the outrage at the ludicrous non-con schedule NU puts out almost every year?

Will you put NU's schedule up against CU's? There's no comparison. Hawk is testing his young men against the best in the country, while the NU faithful cheer for blowouts against the blind sisters of the poor.

Posted by walto_clown on June 3, 2008 at 2:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tall,

Earlier you claim that Bo will work wonders because of the talent that Cally left behind.

Now you suggest that Hawk has failed to deliver.

Which is the apple and which is the orange? Can you admit that these scenarios are completely different?

Now I appreciate how you've kept this thread going. In fact, you've done a better job of soliciting responses than you usually do. BUT, don't put words in the mouths of the Buff fans. We'll decide if/when we're unhappy (on a case-by-case basis) AND we still won't have any power to act on our feelings.

Right now, all is well in Buffville. And I might get skewered for this comment, but I wouldn't trade our coach for any other in the country.

Posted by baBUFF on June 3, 2008 at 2:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tall, that's all wonderful except that Nebraska didn't hire Bo as a Defensive Coordinator...they hired him as a Head Coach. I would put Hawk's resume as a head coach in the WAC ahead of Bo's anyday. But for one bowl game, the guy has never been a head coach. There's going to be a serious learning curve there, but at least Nebraska fans will be patient. Should be interesting...

And what has Hawk failed to deliver? Given the state of the program he inherited, what did he fail to do in his first 2 years that another coach would have done?

I think we all agree it is an obsession and vendetta. Will tall's true agenda ever be revealed?

Posted by mifrfi on June 3, 2008 at 6 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Seriously, the reason we all love to see Tall post his crazy bullship over and over is the joy we anticipate when he twists in the wind wondering how an overrated coach with a 5'9" qb could win in the big 12. I predict that's sooner than later. The Buffs will surprise this year and win eight with a sick schedule.

until pellini delivers "its just talk", right tal.Or do u think he has more than a 1 year window.
no! only hawk doesnt! Do u jack off to being ridiculous.(yes) and that is abnormal!

tal- who is your favorite team? You talk up texas, ou, nebraska, and sometimes you say "we". Is it whoever is winning that year? You have no buisiness pulling for anybody.

"failed to deliver". Take the shell off your head. Was he supposed to deliver with a bunch of walk-on, type talent. Instead of commenting all the time and predicting how the true fans/athletic dept. are supposed to feel. Why dont you answer q's that are asked.

Who is your team?

Do you annoy people on other boards?

can u answer a question?

walto- At this point, i couldnt see a true buff fan having issues with hawk. I wouldnt trade him either!all he is doing is bringing excitement back to a almost broken progam.

Its not just recruits. its donations, facilities and attitude!

tal- u will figure that out soon enough!

P.S. None of your 11 teams has colorados schedule

Tallisall,

I have one question for you, are you a Buff fan or not? I just want to know.

Posted by BuffTime on June 3, 2008 at 10:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't understand why you all keep asking him. The answer is obvious that he is not. Who cares if he says he is a fan? Will any of us actually believe him? Or care?

Anyway, check out rivals and scouts top recruits lists. It is pretty cool seeing Colorado in the running for the top talent in the nation again!

bufftime- We know he is not a buff fan, even when he slips up and says "we". My only question is whos tals team? is it nebraska, texas or oklahoma. Pick one. Please!!

We will never know!

U have 2 remember tal roots 4 the teams that are good at the time! Thats easy 2 do, especially if your lifes work is to not have friends and live in his parents basement. he even annoys them

Tall's assertion of "no delivery" is 100 percent unadulterated hypocrisy.
He was whining about Hawkins before he had one game under his belt.
He was whining about the little boys in the MWC before the Fiesta bowl.
We had an earful of "Stoops type coaches" before last year's CU-OU game.
He talks up other Big 12 teams just to fan the fire.
His favorite team will be next one that hires him and it wont be in D-1.
Scottsdale High School wont even let him near the field like they did Neuheisel in Seattle.

Buffs getting shellacked against K-State.
Had a GREAT time at the bar with fellow Buffs

I agree surfrider, the unending obsession with some husker homer makes you all look idiotic

Sorry, surfy, I'm married. And next time come up with your own insult. One more thing: it's r-o-d-r-i-g-o.

Glad to see you're right about something, however.

Back to the topic of the above article: hasn't the Camera published essentially the same piece two or three times now? How about some real news - like what are Katoa's plans? How did Mohler do with that hellacious spring course load? Or what ever became of rswright?

Thanks, surfy. My wife thanks you as well. Tall (and assuming he has one, his partner) can speak for themselves.

Moehler passed his Spring classes. He is taking 2 summer classes at OCCC and then plans to be in Boulder in July.

monsignor hot seat does have a point, but the intangibles often surprise. as a kansas grad., i know. we'll see if the intangibles, always related to preparation (coaching), and heart, play out this coming campaign. we'll see if the o-line finally developes, and thus, learns to dominate. we'll see if the second-year quarterback, and/or his designate, can make all the necessary plays. we'll see if the defense can rush the passer, and still put a "tatoo" on the runner(s) with painfull consistancy. we'll see if the specials can once again find a way to make the difference, in a positive way, in those sweaty-palm close games. we'll see if the new legs in the backfield are more hip than hype, you damn right, we'll see. then we can talk, up or down, dan hawkins and his crew. danke.
