Buffs recruit familiar face in Gregory-McGhee

CU hopes to land son of former star Kanavis McGhee

Scout.com

When he strolls through the locker room, weight room and hallways of the Dal Ward Center, a lot of familiar names and faces framed in pictures jump out at Kendall Gregory-McGhee.

He is one of the top in-state football recruits for the 2009 class and the familiarity he feels on the Boulder campus is not simply because he has followed the program since he was in diapers. It is more because he knows many of the men who once joined forces to capture the school's only football national championship in 1990.

He calls one of them, dad.

Kanavis McGhee was recruited from Houston by former coach Bill McCartney and helped the Buffs win the national title during a successful career (1987-1990), in which he became one of the leading tacklers in the program's history.

Many strong defenders have come and gone at CU since McGhee, but he remains one of the top 20 tacklers in the school recordbook.

Now his son has been offered a scholarship by coach Dan Hawkins, and Kendall is considering walking in his father's footsteps as he looks forward to his senior year in high school and what figures to be a promising career in the sport he loves.

Gregory-McGhee said he doesn't feel pressure to attend Colorado just because his father is a former star in the program.

"He just tells me to make the right decision and I will know what it is when I come to it," Gregory-McGhee said.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound product of Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora has offers from CU, Colorado State, Wyoming, Minnesota, UNLV, Boise State and Texas Chris-tian. He said he doesn't have a favorite and hasn't set a timetable for making a decision.

It is somewhat surprising that he doesn't yet have an offer from Nebraska, considering he has family ties to Colorado's most bitter rival as well.

His maternal grandfather, Ben Gregory, played running back in Lincoln, Neb., and was named to the Cornhuskers all-century team.

"I know my family has been connected with both those schools, but I'm going to make the right decision for me," Gregory-McGhee said.

Colorado fans might find comfort in the fact he has spent plenty of time around the Buffs this spring and summer.

Gregory-McGhee was at CU on Wednesday watching coaches conduct a camp for fellow prep players. He said there are several attractions that have him considering CU, most important is the school's strong academic reputation.

Gregory-McGhee's mother, Brooke, is the principle at his high school and always has taught him to value education first. He said he also likes the energy around the CU program. It is something he suspects begins with Hawkins.

Gregory-McGhee plays wide receiver, tight end and defensive end for Cherokee Trail.

He caught nine touchdown passes as a junior last season and said he is being recruited by most schools as an athlete with potential to play offense or defense.

He said he doesn't have a preference when it comes to a particular position and he's equally comfortable rushing the quarterback or running pass routes.

Colorado could use another long, athletic defensive lineman in the mold of Gregory-McGhee and his father.

Kanavis McGhee remains close to the CU program and is often present on game days and at other events. He said he simply wants his son to find happiness no matter where he chooses to continue his football career and his education.

"The way I would like to do this is for him to experience it on his own as Kendall Gregory-McGhee, and his decision is his decision on what he wants to do," Kanavis McGhee said. "I want him to get that full experience of being a recruitable kid and having to go through the process of what he's looking for in a university and playing ball at the next level as a student-athlete."

Be a Buff Kendall. Help bring back that MNC to the flatirons.

This kid would be a great pick up for the Buffs if coach Hawk can get him. With the way defensive ends are built these days, tall and lean like basketball players, he would probably make a really great one once he added a few lbs. Come be a Buff Kendall!!

...Rivals also has LSU, Stanford, and Nebraska (I have no idea why since Kendall said he has not received an offer) also as recruiting Kendall.

Colorado is looking at him as a TE, but no doubt this kid would get looks at DE.

Kendall, following in the footsteps of your father and leading CU to national glory would definitely be an epic story. We hope to have you become a Buff, but wherever you go I wish you the best of luck.

Go Buffs!

Well, not Pelini as he doesn't recruit but someone from NU. He does have 3 stars. That's two too many for a Husker recruit it seems. At least for an early commit.

he just wants to be offered by Neb because when you turn down the huskers, it makes it that much more fun when you choose to be a buff.

I still have McGhees Giants rookie card, I still remember how crushed I was in watching that game when the Rocket took it to the house. I was 10 and we were watching it at another Irish Catholic families house(guess who they were all going for) and that beautiful yellow flag laying on the sod. 10-9, and after Bieniemy had crushed my heart the year before all was forgiven.

Yes, I was on vacation. Didn't mean to starve everyone for Buffs copy. I'll pick up the pace over the next few weeks before taking the last of my vacation later in July.

After making several rookie mistakes in today's story, (principle/principal) I'm beginning to think vacation can quickly turn me into an idiot. Perhaps I should donate the rest of my time off to one of you instead.

We'll try to do a better job at avoiding week-long stretches without football stories in the paper. I know from my email that you find it annoying.

Good article Kyle, how about an update on other CO recruits like Kasa, Harris, Sirles, Logan, and that Jennert kid who seems to be raising some eyebrows lately.

Gotta love Bo's recruiting strategy not even offering a NU legacy who has interest...what a joke. Hopefully he's bringing back the walk-on program because they're going to need some help.

They will all be 5 star by January.

No way to tell yet how they will turn out in college, but these kids were getting recruited by the likes of Army, Tulsa, Buffalo, and Syracuse...not impressed. 4-star FB...in your dreams.

Besides, if any of these kids turns out to be any good Hawk will just poach them anyway. Hawk likes to keep a coulpe scholarships in his back pocket to see how the Nebraska commits play as seniors and then snatch a couple of the best away.

Or they jumped on the first scholarship someone waved in front of them because there weren't many options. Tell me tall, who else offered these kids?

Maybe they'll be good, who knows, but shows you how far NU has fallen that you are trumpeting this group of 3-stars that no one else seemed to notice. Tom Osborne must be buying pepto by the case-load these days watching what has happened to his program.

Well you conveniently forget to mention offers from schools like Utah, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, and Texas Tech, but I can understand how that would not help your argument.

Don't forget that Iowa St and Stanford are BCS schools and Jim Harbaugh is one of the hottest recruiters in the country right now. Take a look at his 2009 class so far, it's better than CU or NU.

so tall- what do the fuskers do when Ganz's propencity for throwing picks shows up again in 2008?

or maybe I'm wrong, maybe he throws a good ball and our "undersized young db's having a pick parade was a fluke right?"

Kyle - I think buffalo_flyer already mentioned this but can you give us an update on the kids who arrived in Boulder for the summer (D Scott, Polk, Major, Givens, etc.) and have interviews with these kids. What's the word on Katoa? Baseball season sucks and I NEED soem football feed to keep me occupied!! Thanks!

I like Joe Ganz. Keller had tools but he had no character. Callahan had no idea how to deal with young kids or develop team unity.

Ganz is a senior this year. By the time Cody is a senior he will be just as good and probably better.

Provided of course Ballenger/Hansen/Wynn dont take his job.

Back to the purpose of the article... Hell ya, RINGOS BACK!! Keep us fed Kyle, I have to make it until NCAA 2009 makes it to store shelves....

Anyways, I like this kid. He definitely doesn't seem to be in a hurry to commit, which makes a lot of sense considering he could get a lot more offers with a good senior season. His size alone will get him noticed (once he puts on more pounds, yikes!).

I just hope he remembers which school treated his dad right AND was the first major school to give him an offer...

Btw, RINGO what is the word on the camps that are going on right now? CU got a handful of recruits from this camp same time last year. Mahnke I think... Lets hope we get a few more this year!

Sounds like this Diante Jackson kid is pretty high on the Buffs. 6'3 - 190 and offers from 19 schools including pretty much every Pac-10 school. It would be nice to pick up another big receiver to complement Darden in this class.

Nice to have you back Ringo, you slacker. Vacation, what's that?

Fictonal account, though Kyle can save it just in case he needs the material:

"....In an unusual turn of events, regular Buffzone poster and resident negative personality tallisall was taken to Folsom field and forced to endure what is favorite quarterbacks, NU's Joe Ganz and OU's Sam Bradford, cant handle - the blitz. Several ardent CU fans repeatedly pummeled tallisall into the Folsom turf with repeated blind-side hits. Though police eventually found the badly bruised and concussed tallisall, wearing a Hawkins jersey and sucking his thumb in a fetal position at mid-field, no witnesses have come forward to identify the perpetrators. Tall himself was unable to identify the culprits, but reportedly the incident had knocked some sense into him. From the wheelchair which he will spend the next several weeks recovering from broken legs, he commented that "Cody looks much taller than I thought."

In an unrelated development, Coach Dan Hawkins announced today several new pass rushing DE commitments who made unofficial visits to campus in the last few days."

Must be the shortest man in the world or something. Do us all a favor and save your allowance and buy yourself a Ferrari branded tricycle and get over it.

Posted by archalon on June 19, 2008 at 2:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

He hasnt yet - get over it. Just cause a guy is tall doesnt mean he can play QB.

Posted by baBUFF on June 19, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ballenger is a year behind and has to beat out a returning starter. He will get a shot, but that does not mean he deserves 1/2 the practice reps out of the gate. If he lights the world on fire in practice this fall, the reps will come, but Cody has EARNED the starters job with his play on the field and someone else has to give coach a compelling reason to replace him.

Being 6-5 doesn't entitle you to a job, you need to earn it. And you will see more downfield plays this year no matter who the QB is for several reasons: The line will be better and give the QB more time. Talent, speed, and (get excited) HEIGHT at WR will be improved giving the QB more targets. And with a studly group of RBs, defenses will have to respect the run and play up opening the field for homerun shots.

Bradford had all of these advangtages LAST year and still couldn't find a way to beat the lowly Buffs. At least he can pads those stats against UT-Chattanooga this year.

Posted by baBUFF on June 19, 2008 at 3:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Disagree with what? I never said Bradford wasn't good, he just wasn't as good as Cody when they played head to head. You praise Bradford and rip Cody, but the only time they were on the field together Bradford was outplayed by a tiny, slow, terrible QB who is only playing because his daddy is the coach.

Tall,

One often uses comparisons with common opponents, when two teams have not met, CU played and beat Nebraska and Oklahoma last year.

Hawkins had numerous interceptions in the first half of the season and few, if any, past the seventh game. He does not have the physical stature of many BCS quarterbacks, but is accurate and smart. He improved as the season progressed and I expect will improve as he matures and gains experience.

If CU's offensive line produces as expected and we can pick up a few defensive players, CU can and will compete for the Big 12 and National titles in a couple of years, with Hawkins at quarterback.

Also, when writing of Pelini's previous stint at NU, please list for us the teams the Huskers beat that year, and the scores of the games they lost. That will make for an interesting analysis. He may prove to be a great coach, he may not. Pelini will have great resources to work with at NU, but he will also have to produce great results. Coach Hawkins will have to do more with less at CU, I think he will.
If not I'll go to a Bronco game or skiing. I hope you enjoy women's volleyball.

"Like watching a train wreck" - not a bad comparison. I don't have a problem w/ Tall, he actually amuses me. I picture Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh typing away every so often on his PC.

The reason why Cody is starting is because of his leadership - alot like Koy Detmer or Joel Klatt in his field-Generalness. Ballenger is (I agree) more physically gifted, but that doesn't make him the better option at QB. Think Brian White, Jeremy Weisinger, Adam Bledsoe.. now I think Ballenger has a bigger upside than those prior prototypical QB-flops, but if he doesn't have the leadership qualities (especially important w/ a young team), the mental toughness to hang in the pocket (or the quick feet), or the guts/moxy to pull out a tough game, then he should not be the starter. I hope he does get some early-in-the-season mop-up snaps (perhaps Eastern Washington) to see what he's got.

Don't let tallisall fool you. The Husker faithful are already voicing their concerns about their, thus-far, weak 2009 recruiting effort. Many of NU's top targets (especially at QB and RB) have already given verbals to other schools.

Most new coaches at big programs reel in huge classes in their 1st full of year of recruiting. But Bo P has fallen well behind UT, USC, OU, UGA, etc, which tells many of the Husker fans that their beloved NU is no longer a big-time program in the minds of 4 and 5 star recruits. There was an article on ESPN.com just last week highlighting this concern in Huskerland. The ESPN author said NU will never be able to recruit like they did in the 80's and 90's because the talent base in Nebraska is so thin, many other programs offer the same amenities, more TV coverage, better locations/access to media hubs (i.e. USC, Miami, FU, LSU, Texas, etc).

Now Talli, the author didn't say Nebraska was going to disappear, but he did state that the Huskers would never be able to recruit successfully against many of the top programs. I guess you are going to have to see how well NU fares with 3 star recruits. KU did well last year. Can they sustain it is another question?

I'm not saying CU is anywhere near ready to compete with the Big Dogs of college football, but NU has become an after though in college football and the minds of top high school recruits.

So enjoy another 6-6 season there in Huskerland Talli. And get used to it.

Buffnut99 did touch on a point that I noticed last year.
First of all, Cody is still the starter based on overall performance.
There were a couple of times last year when Nelson or Ballenger could have mopped up without a whole lot of risk and it didnt happen. If one of these guys has to step in because of an injury to Cody, it would help to have as much PT under their belt as possible.
I expect better things out of the Buffs this year and hopefully more opportunities for the same.

Hmmm.

Rival's preseason rankings have Nebraska at #45. Working their way toward the top, the site's pickers are now at #39 and they still haven't gotten to Florida State yet. Or Colorado for that matter.

Guess if FSU's a patsy the corn must be...what? The second-best once-storied-program-trying-to-stay-relevant after #40 Notre Dame (who, by the way, were 3-9 last year)?

Rivals also has a nice little article pointing out that Nebraska is "the only team in the nation scheduled to play five consecutive home games to open the season."

Takes a real creative thinker to argue toughness of sked with those details.

Yes you do. CSU was awful last year and will be next year, too.

Your point?

My point is if, as you claim FSU stinks, it's not too difficult to imagine what that smell eminating from Lincoln is.

Maybe the Huskers and the Rams can get together. Seem like two worthy opponents to me.

Boy, the more I think of it, the more I'd love to see CSU and Nebraska play: two cow-town programs headed in the wrong direction, two new head coaches, two historically awful defenses.

Maybe they could even play at a neutral site and the winner would earn the right to play CU. Sterling High School must have a football field. Or Scottsbluff.

Only a bunch of nancies would schedule NU's opponents and feel the need to pound their chests about how great they are.

NU is a has-been program going nowhere and they should be ashamed to put their product on the field.

I gaurantee an WMU victory.

hes still straying fom what he said about fsu. His foot must be in his mouth.

Tall - I believe you said CUs non-conf sched was not all that strong pointing out that FSU was weak (i'm paraphrasing here). What rodrigo is pointing out is rivals has NU at #45 and neither FSU nor CU has been mentioned yet and they are at #39 and moving down. The point is if FSU isn't all that good what does that make NU? Less than not all that good. Make sense now? I guess having to play NU hurts CU's strength of schedule.

Thanks, bufffan, for helping spell it out. I didn't think I needed to be so explicit... but then again, we are talking about tall.

who do the corn dodgers play in 09?

Posted by extrapoint on June 23, 2008 at 3:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

so I will answer my own question.
They get the h&h with VT again. so far so good
then its rape and pillage on the SAAC
Arkansas State
Louisiana - Lafayette
and
Florida Atlantic.
If Bo doesnt expel enough of the Callahan infection, FLA could be a toughie.

makes sense, I suppose
they certainly shouldnt have to worry about the BCS strength of schedule thing for a couple more years.
and
They recognize the level to which they have fallen.

New guy here (CU'91). Tal keeps taking shots about CU playing I-AA E.Wash this coming year. Since 2002 CU has played 1 I-AA school (MT State '06 & lost, ouch!). But NU has played 4 (McNeese St 02, W.Illinois 04, Maine 05, Nicholls St 06) and has I-AA S.Dakota St on the schedule for 2010. THAT 4 I-AA TEAMS IN 5 YEARS!! What a hypocrite!!

If not a NU fan then who is your team? What wagon are you riding? Or are you the type to not state an allegiance for fear of receiving the same smack that you're trying to dish out.

I spoke to a 15 year old QB this week who was recently at CU for a football camp. He said Cody was around quite a bit and being a 15 year old kid he was comparing himself pretty closely to the Big 12 QB.

His observations:
1. He said he's 5'11" and he's certain that Cody is two (maybe three) inches shorter than he is.

2. He's sure that his arm is "much stronger" than Cody's. He said that with any pass over 30 yards Cody has to "hang it." Although he did say Cody is pretty accurate on short passes.

3. He was very critical of Cody's throwing motion. He said Cody "overthrows" anything downfield in an effort to make up for his lack of arm strength.

4. He said Cody is "very slowfooted." In fact, "slower than most of the O-line."

His conclusion: Cody is too short to even see his receivers; if he does happen to see a receiver he doesn't have the arm to get the ball to him; and if all else fails Cody can't scramble because he's too slow to outrun anyone.

In general, he was completely amazed that someone with so little athletic ability could be playing QB at a BCS school!

He said he wishes his father were the coach at a college!

zzzzzzzzz
snort....huh?
Brian? Gary?
oh its you Tall
you are starting to sound like one of those old geezers that has to tell the same story hundreds of times.

Cody Hawkins is a very poor athlete who only plays because his father wants him to. Many deserving athletes have been left in Cody's wake. It's sad story of nepotism and self-promotion but more and more people are starting to understand it (no matter how hard you and the other homers try to suppress it).

Posted by extrapoint on July 1, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

you sound like one of those left in the wake.

Why dont you reappear as tall and start talking to yourself again. thats the only way you will get another person here to agree with you

Posted by WhosYourDaddy on July 1, 2008 at 4:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I couldn't care less if you agree: there are many other people that don't think about things like nepotism until they read it here. I'm simply helping those people understand these very real issues; what you think doesn't matter at all; you're beyond rationale thought; you just want Hawk to notice you and pat you on your head.

Posted by extrapoint on July 1, 2008 at 10:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

what a noble guy! "just helping people to understand" and for nothing more than the goodness of your heart!

round of applause please
'specially from those people who dont understand nepotism....or football.

hmmmm wait a minute! "rationale thought"? where have I heard that before. Not from rswright. He actually knows better than to use 2 nouns together when one was supposed to an adjective.

this all smacks of a Nebraska education......as does the part about nepotism. No need for the word there because the entire state is inbred anyway.

One question we dont have to ask
is
whosyourclown?

Extrapointyhead - Tell us again the story about how you used to follow football players around campus, hoping against hope, that you would be accepted as the team mascot.

Here you are 40 years later still hoping...

Cody Hawkins sucks and Dan Hawkins doesn't know who you are and doesn't care how often you try to defend him and his midget son.

Posted by extrapoint on July 2, 2008 at 7:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

and you have the Hawkins trembling in their boots....dont you?

angry clowns are the funniest

whosyour - you don't know what you are talking about. go away.
