Buffs had Aunese edge with Tuioti-Mariner

Tuioti-Mariner second cousin of former CU quarterback

Colorado football coaches had an advantage they didn't know about when recruiting perhaps the most overlooked member of the 2008 class last year.

It turns out Max Tuioti-Mariner always has had a soft spot in his big heart for the school where his second cousin became famous during an intrepid fight against cancer.

Sal Aunese, a former CU quarterback, lost that battle two decades ago and his story became the backbone of the Buffs' run to consecutive national championship games in 1989 and 1990. Aunese's courage also became a source of pride for his family, including his cousin, Josie, who welcomed her second son, Max, into the world not long after Aunese left it.

Max Tuioti-Mariner often heard about his second cousin growing up in a sports-crazy, Samoan home with six siblings in Corona, Calif. When he discovered early in high school he had enough talent to merit a Division I scholarship in football, he hoped one of those scholarship offers would eventually come from CU.

"That's pretty much why I went to Colorado because he played there," Max Tuioti-Mariner said of Aunese.

Yet, when coach Dan Hawkins and his assistants came calling with an offer for Max, Josie Tuioti-Mariner said she purposely didn't tell them about her relation to Aunese because she wanted her son to be judged on his merits as one of the best offensive linemen in the country.

"We didn't want to tell anyone that because we wanted Max to have his own name out there in Colorado," Josie Tuioti-Mariner said. "Now that he's going there, it's OK if peopleknow he's my cousin."

His familial connection to CU wasn't the only reason he became a Buff.

Tuioti-Mariner also fell in love with the coaching staff in Boulder and the chemistry he witnessed among players when he visited the school. It didn't hurt that the Buffs stuck with him after the devastating day in spring 2007 when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament ending any hope of playing his senior season.

Tuioti-Mariner was ranked the seventh best guard in the country for 2008 despite injuring his knee on the first day of spring practices at his high school. He stepped in a sprinkler hole while trying to block a linebacker.

"He has a lot of drive, he's not just trying to block someone he is trying to punish them," CU offensive line coach Jeff Grimes said on national signing day in February. "He's a great guy for us to get, I really recruited him hard and for a long time. We really had to battle for Max because he's tremendously talented and I'm excited to get him out here."

Tuioti-Mariner also chose Colorado because he was intrigued by the possibility of blocking for Darrell Scott, the nation's No. 1 tailback recruit in the 2008 cycle. Scott also became a Buff.

Tuioti-Mariner committed to CU over offers from nearly every PAC-10 school and Hawaii, where his older brother, Clarence, plays. He said Southern Cal was the only school that stopped recruiting him after his injury, but USC resumed the recruiting process late last year after he had committed to CU.

Missing his senior year and going through the rehabilitation process took a toll on him, but it might have been a blessing.

"It humbled him," his mother said. "We told Max there is a reason for everything when he got hurt. We always tell all of our seven kids that injuries will take away football, but education, nothing will take away that.

"So being injured and not playing for his senior year really humbled him and opened his eyes to being grateful and humble about the situation."

Tuioti-Mariner continues to go through the admissions process at CU and is awaiting clearance from the NCAA Clearinghouse. He said he isn't expecting any problems and plans to be in Boulder in two weeks.

He weighs 320 pounds and is working out at home trying to shed about 20 pounds before training camp. He said he still isn't fully recovered from his knee injury, but he is much stronger now than just a few months ago.

"I'm getting there," he said.

How cool would that be to have Kanavis McGee's son and Sal's cuz on the same team!

P.S. A movie about Sal Aunese is set to be released before too long.

GO BUFFS!

Welcome to Boulder, Max!

woah nellie, I was already stoked to have him on the team, but now I feel honored! I hope they let him take a snap from the QB position and plow it in memory of his cousin!

addendum: Let him run one in against Nebraska. That would make his cousin smile!

Good story! The movie was supposed to come out a while ago.
Did anybody know that aunese's son is a walk-on qb at lsu (tc mcCartney)?

Awesome story Kyle - Keep 'em coming - can't wait to see what tallisspineless and invisible has to say about this one. Maybe he'll even try and defend his beloved huskers and their classy 'Sal Is Dead - Go Big Red' posters that they kindly posted all over the place after we beat them following Sal's death. BTW Kyle - any word on who else is going through/completed/ or having difficulties with the NCAA clearinghouse? I mean, in all honesty this IS Colorado, not Knebraska, and it does take a bit of effort to make sure that all of the I's are dotted and T's are crossed... Please let us know. Go BUFFS!!!

Kanavis McGee's son + Sal's cousin = Destiny for another National Championship! In the next couple of years, we are definitely going to be able to make a run for it. You heard it here first, 2010 National Champions! Let's go Buffs! Rough'em ....... GO CU!

Posted by DCBuff on June 20, 2008 at 7:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It sounds like the Buffs will redshirt Max this year (the knee injury & maybe late start in the summer session)...which is just fine since it looks like the O-line is pretty solid this year and he will be able to challenge for a spot next year. Either way, he will have at least two years to block for D Scott, assuming Scott goes pro after his jr. year.

I agree with Ralphie2..great article...keep 'em coming!!

Posted by shoulder2shoulder on June 20, 2008 at 7:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

anyone with a brain knows it takes two full years to fully recover from an acl injury. Why rush him, red-shirt this year and then let him dominate for 4 yrs. The program is in great shape, we have the ability to red-shirt at any position now. Not the case last year on the o-line or @ WR. Anyword on Major moving to DE, I know there were talks about it in Feb.??

flabuff - TC ended up at LSU because Mac and Les Miles are still close and Les was very close to Sal. There was a story about it in either the DC or another paper last summer.

If we played Nebraskas sched. we would have 10+ wins, but playing the toughest sched. in America I'll take 7 or 8 wins.

Posted by shoulder2shoulder on June 20, 2008 at 8:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

nope, the truth and I like it that way! I would much rather win 8 games a year and play top 25 teams then win 9 and play 5 or 6 directional schools

One of Barney's big wins in that "glorified" 05 season was NM State who are also on the that "tough" hukster schedule this year

Posted by archalon on June 20, 2008 at 9:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Mariner will be a good player. Reminds me of Chris Naeole a bit. Redshirt him is the way to go and though any ACL takes two full years to recover, the ligament is stronger after reconstruction then before.

I think we all get spoiled a bit about recruiting. They dont need to play right away. Im much happier seeing a redshirt year to get up on academics, playbook, wieghtroom, etc. That said, I think Scott and Major (DE) will play alot this year and in the following years, the depth will be there to RS most of the incoming classes.

Tallshi%.....ACL rehab takes 9-12 months at the very least and most athleates are not fully recoverd for up to 2 years (back to full speed)
If you where any good at your research you would know this and not make stupid comments.
Great to have Sal's cousin at CU! I still remember where I was when I heard Sal had passed......

Go Buffs!!!!!

your amazing tall, you always find a w ay to put a negative spin on things. What would you say is a sufficient amount of time for a kid his size to come back from this injury. Enlighten us DR.tall. It can take 9 months to over a year to recover.

Posted by shoulder2shoulder on June 20, 2008 at 9:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Tall- are you really comparing home games against New Mexico State to road games against FSU??????

Posted by bouldabuff on June 20, 2008 at 10:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Do you think Major will have as big an impact at D-end than LB? I was really hoping that with all the quality LB's we have now that we would think about a 3-4 in the future. I think it would be better against the spread offenses of the North. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure how MTM was specifically "overlooked" in this class Ringo. With the hype around D.Scott I suppose everyone was overlooked.

Loosen that belt around your neck Tall - it's cutting off the oxygen to your brain.

What a joke Tall, you tell me which of these is the hardest game:

Home v. New Mexico St.
Home v. Western Michigan
Home v. San Jose St.
Away v. Florida St.

Are you serious bro? Nebraska's entire non-con schedule is at home...what a bunch of nancies.

I guess that's probably the point, right?

Posted by flabuff227 on June 20, 2008 at 10:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

FSU will be 3-0 and in the top 25 by the time the buffs play them. FSU is more talented than any team nebraskas playing. Next!

Posted by archalon on June 20, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Nancies - havent heard that for awhile. Have to use it more.

Thanks for the word of the day

Honestly, I see Major as a DE. It makes alot of sense, but there is no decision I guess so far. I bet he plays in the nickle this year as a situational rusher to see what he's got.

Also, Goree, Obi and Cunningham will surprise this year - very underrated players. Look for the pass rush to be vastly better then 2007

Posted by bouldabuff on June 20, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't know baBUFF - San Jose St. could be tricky at home. They did beat Utah St. on the road last year and we know how quality of an opponent they are. They also lost some nailbiters last year to ASU(45-3), Stanford(37-0), and Fresno St(30-0) or else it could have been a much better year for them.

tall you are a complete DB you just got done saying that FSU was terrible now you are trying to say that they consider us a tune up? I guess we could say the same thing about Nebraska then huh? a tune up for the bowl game that you watched from home you piece of sh*t

Phill Steele ranks CU schedule as the 8th toughest in the Country. He has Nebraska @ 22, that is a huge difference for 2 schools that are in the same division and in the same conference. Also, playing Nebraska hurt CU's strength of schedule while playing CU helped Nebraskas strength of schedule..HAHAHAHAHHA

Forgot to mention Herrod to - you want to pick one guy on D that no one is talking about now but will be in 3 months, its him.

And if you know his personal story, you cant help but root for the guy to be a success

You said Nebraska was playing 3 weak non-con games "just like CU". Virginia Tech and West Virginia are a wash so I'm looking at the remaining games foolio.

The CSU game is in Denver, a neutral site, so we have 2 true home games versus Nebraska's 4 because they are nancies and are afraid of a tough schedule.

Does anyone know how Hudgins is progressing after last years injury? He could play a big factor in the success of our DE's this year.

I would say Lucas and Hudgins as the starters - Obi and Herrod getting some significant PT - do you really think Major will get on the field at DE this year? In all honesty - I hope he doesn't have to.

FSU is going to be getting about a dozen players back from their "open book test" suspension just in time for the CU game - I'll bet that team is going to be jacked up to play CU in a nationally televised game. It will be tough, although bouldabuff, I agree it may not be quite as tough as playing San Jose St at home.

That Nebraska / SJSU game should be a classic - two 5-7 teams from a year ago trying to climb out of the bottom of their respective conference. It's a trap game for Nebraska who may be looking ahead to the next week's tough matchup with New Mex St. Bo better be ready...

If you're such a fan NU's out of conference schedule, go root for them. Their schedule stinks and always has, period.

Tell me where any other school plays two out-of-conference BCS schools that could/should be ranked in the top 15?

Now back to football, BJ Beatty has a motor that has to compare to Dizon's. I also think his nose for the ball is developing. It's going to be exciting no matter what the idiot tal says.

Agreed on the DE's - I think Obi and Herrod can keep Major from a switch, I just have the feeling Major would be a stud DE paired with the LB's we already have the next few years.

If we can somehow get Te'o, imagine him in two years with an upperclass Katoa, Rippy and Major ?

LB U continues

FSU's ranking is irrelevant because they are clearly better than anyone else on NU's non-con schedule save VT...without question. SJSU will be lucky to be in the top 10 of their own conference.

If Nebraska had enough money for a second D-1 school they might understand a rivalry game. As it is they have to settle for joining MU as the only show in state, and having "Rivals" hundreds of miles away. CSU wasn't great last year but they are D-1 with several NFL players and Bowl appearances this decade. I doubt you were bagging on NU choice to play them a few years back. As to how CU will do on the field that remains to be seen, but only a blind person would not be encouraged by the change in both attitude, strength and play on the field.

down deep Husker fans realize that they play pansies in the non-conference,witness Frankie Solich winning 10 games and getting canned..pretty sure that is correct..for practical purposes that year was worth about 7 wins..and even though we have to line up against CSU every year to satisfy the politicians, a poll of true Buffs would reveal we'd rather line up against a quality SEC team, Big-10 or PAC 10 team..no program in the country year in and year out plays a tougher non-confernece schedule than CU, period, end of discussion for ever..

So here's the way I see it...

Last year CU beat Nebraska and went to a bowl game, while NU didn't make a bowl and got a front row seat from their couch. CU had a better recruiting class than NU who will also be breaking in a first time head coach.

Seems obvious which program is closer to a Big 12 championship regardless of non-con scheduling. At least CU fans will get to watch some good games, while cornsucker fans will watch nailbiters against NMSt.

Anyways is d-scott suppose to arrive in boulder tommorrow?

ANYWAYS, the DE's....

I really hope we can keep this linebacking corps together. When we get Katoa back, him and Major, if they have sufficient blocking in front of them, should just be a wrecking crew. Dizon never had the physical tools these guys have, and he still got sacks, INT's, and of course, tackles out the wazoo.

As far as hudgins, he is still rehabbing. Everybody should worry about him, the achilles is a scary thing to rehab. I hope we get him back this year as until the young guys mature a bit (and we get more DE's in this class) our depth is THIN at DE.

I know who he is, but you didn't answer my question.... great the analysis came from where? I love how you never quote any of your sources.... and I want to see something saying that he is better then D-Scott,from a credible source not your own pathetic journalistic attempts

Posted by skipples4u on June 20, 2008 at 3:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Just a little analysis from Jeremy Crabtree and mike farrell from RIVALS *sorry troll i know how you hate it when people site credible sources.)

Jeremy Crabtree's take: To me, there is not a more complete back that can hurt you on every single play like Darrell Scott. Just when you think you have him bottled up – bam – he's gone. I also think McGuffie definitely is a threat to score on every play. Curtis is another one that can kill you in the blink of an eye. A very good group here.

Mike Farrell's take: There aren't as many pure speed backs in this year's crop as there was last year but the guys who can take it to the house are bigger overall and can do so inside or outside.

Vote: Who is the top home-run threat?

1. Darrell Scott, 6-0, 204, Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure Scott highlights
2. Sam McGuffie, 6-0, 188, Cypress (Texas) Cy-Fair McGuffie highlights
3. De'Anthony Curtis, 5-10, 209, Camden (Ark.) Fairview Curtis highlights
4. Jermie Calhoun, 6-0, 210, Van (Texas) Calhoun highlights
5. Andre Ellington, 5-10, 170, Moncks Corner (S.C.) Berkeley
Crabtree's take: This is why I love Darrell Scott. He's not a guy that will bounce it to the outside every play. He knows how to run through the middle and bounce off contact. In Katy's offense you must run inside, and that's why Aundre Dean is one of the best in the nation at it. Jonas Gray is also a great threat between the tackles. He has the jets that so few backs do, but when you watch him you see that he makes a lot of big runs between the tackles.
Farrell's take: For Scott to be the top homerun threat and inside runner shows exactly how special he is. There are some big, physical runners in this group.

Shurburtt's take: I like to look for guys who are tough between the tackles for this area and most of these guys are, though I question if Darrell Scott actually is better than some of the other guys when you are just considering inside running.

Vote: Who is the best inside runner?

1. Darrell Scott, 6-0, 204, Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure Scott highlights
2. Aundre Dean, 6-1, 200, Katy (Texas) Dean highlights
3. Jonas Gray, 5-10, 213, Detroit (Mich.) Country Day Gray highlights
4. Eric Smith, 5-10, 239, Seffner (Fla.) Armwood Smith highlights
5. Richard Samuel, 6-0, 197, Cartersville (Ga.) Cass

thats wierd Calhoun isn't even on the second list.. wierd!

i lived in Texas and can tell you first hand that Calhoun is from a little redneck town in east texas and a 3aaa school.there are alot of 3aaa runningbacks that look good but cant hack it in D1 football!i would have loved 2c calhoun in dallas or houston divisions.Superman played 4 2 bigtime calli programs and dominated both,he'll no doubt do the same as a BUFF!!!
tallisall-spanish 4 cow pie or buffaloe chip

calhoun will be a good back, but he never would've qualified at CU (that's why UT backed off him). DScott is the best there is as well as the best we could get.

Tall- espn is the only publication that rated him higher. "BY many", ha.

Not that it matters but we lost to Montana STATE-the same place that Ochs transferred to after he broke a nail. That is not Montana. As any wily poster on this site can tell you - KNOW YOUR FAX (done deliberately to cheat my spell checker there in Chadron). If you want to hit and run get your frikin fax right. Now back to the spool...

Tall is nothing more than a plant by NU. He gets maybe $1 if his posts generate at least one in return. Get off this guy...Really. He's not worth your effort and why are you all discussing Nebraska football on a CU site? I'm quite sure Corn fans don't chat about Buff Stuff on their board. Try to be above that.

Got a CU student in my family. Word on campus is Givens and Kasa are great buds. It would be a total surprise if Kasa isn't a Buff next year.

And to Kyle Ringo...dude...welcome back from your vaca but get off your duff and bring us stuff. Can't you tell we're starving out here? Loved your blog...just keep it up.

ruffemup - I've been getting Husker fans' panties in a bunch for a while on their site, and would like to extend an invitation to all my Buff fans to post on bigrednetwork.com. Those Nebraska fans are just a barrel of monkeys and love to hear how their program is floundering and how the Buffs went to a bowl game last year and they didn't. Check it out!

That's bigrednetwork.com. See you there!

MDBuff...I'm kinda looking for a fight on Friday night so I'll accept your invite and go poke fun at those who are mentally defenseless. Thanks a ton. What is your handle posting there? I'd love to read your posts.

Actually, here is the actual scouting report that TallisSmall read, courtesy HotHighSchoolStuds.com (small's favorite site):

"Jermie Calhoun is large. Really large. Great length, good girth. Can go all day. Real man's man. Finds the hole and slams it up in there. Can't play football though."

Naturally someone with man-crushes on Sam Bradford, Bo Pellini, and any guy in crimson leather chaps like tallisSmall would find a scouting report like this fascinating. Don't worry, tall. I'm sure Bo will write soon.

Steve Hanway? gotta be another suspect for Tall. what a dweeb!what a pathetic website. they all sound like a bunch a guys in the nursing home doing the 'ol "the older we are, the better we were"

One good thing about the site is that you can design your name to fit your comment.

I go by a number of handles on bigrednetwork, including "realist" and "Corn_Blows"

UN-BO-LEEVABLE
those sensitive little cry babies at bigrednetwork deleted everyone of my comments.

They get themselves all inflated with this "huksterkill" thing and as soon as someone shows up to throw it back in their face they run like 3rd graders

Tall's kind of fans

Censorship is alive and well, my friends. Even my lighthearted suggestions on off season reading about how the Buffs beat the Huskers 65-51 on a 3 day old post was taken down. Sheesh! They can dish it but they can't take it.

Yea they took down my posts as well. No profanity whatsoever.

According to that website they have the rolls royce of programs. You would never know that they were awful lsat year.

Permit me to change the subject from football. Kyle needs to brush up on his genealogy. If Sal and Josie are first cousins, then her son is Sal's first cousin once removed not his second cousin.

Sal's son and Josie's son are second cousins.

We only mention NU because of NU trolls coming on this site (tallisall to be exact). We don't mention NU at all until he/she shows up. If you all go away we'd be happy not to mention NU ever again, until of course we hang another 60+ points on the pink shirts again this year.

Posted by bufffan8 on June 23, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The third comment said nothing bad about NU. Just some nostalgia for a former Buff that has passed away. Anyway, I hate seeing you come down to our level so you can go away and remain high class on your own site. BW-HA-HA-HA-HA! Have a nice summer in Lincoln.

God - I can't wait to slap another 60 points on a pathetic NU team, this time in stinkin Lincoln. Football is all they have -- that's why it is so sad.
