Hawk: Buffs face tough road ahead

Young team faces tough schedule in 2008 season

Check out beat writer Kyle Ringo's blog on the CU football team

www.buffzone.com

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Fisher DeBerry, where have you gone?

Six college football coaches from around the state came together Wednesday at the Olympic Training Center to talk about their teams and prospects for the 2008 season, still more than two months away.

Each played it conservatively in front of a crowd of 400, including Colorado coach Dan Hawkins.

They made no predictions or promises beyond their teams playing hard and trying to do things right.

Gone are the days when DeBerry, the former coach at Air Force who retired in 2007, supplied a joke a minute for 10-20 minutes in his classic southern drawl. He always left the crowds with a little more energy than the state in which he found them.

Perhaps the best line of the day was provided by Hawkins when he compared his youthful team -- only eight players have lettered three seasons -- to a golden retriever puppy.

"We like to run around a lot and we're cute, but sometimes we chew things up and pee on the rug," he said.

Hawkins, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, Northern Colorado coach Scott Downing, Colorado College coach Bob Bodor, Colorado State assistant Larry Lewis and CSU-Pueblo coach John Wristen each gave previews of the approaching season.Wristen, who began building the ThunderWolves program from scratch last summer after a year at UCLA, began the program with an imitation of Hawkins' famous rant, screaming 'It ain't intramurals.'

Hawkins, who noted he is quickly climbing to the top of the "seniority tree" in the group, said his goals for the Buffs this year are the same as every other year.

He hopes to win the Big 12 and win the national championship. He said his team is young and still in rebuilding mode, but if it does the right things, anything is possible.

As he has said in the past, Hawkins said the 6-7 Buffs last season were just a few plays away from being 2-10 once again as they were in 2006. But they were also just a few plays from being 10-2.

He hopes his players are able to learn from some of what they experienced last season and avoid making mistakes that held them back.

"We're going to have to scratch and claw just to get back to where we were last year," he said.

The Buffs have another difficult schedule, including a stretch from mid-September to early November that pits them against West Virginia, Florida State, Texas, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Texas A&M.

Four of those games are on the road or at neutral sites.

"Our schedule and the way it is, we better understand that every little detail is going to count," he said.

In his 2008 college football preview magazine, Phil Steele rates the Buffs schedule the ninth toughest in the nation. It is why some believe the Buffs could improve this season and continue to grow without making significant progress in the win column.

"I think we just have to keep paddling and paddling hard," he said.

Machu man

Hawkins, CU quarterback Cody Hawkins and the rest of the family are preparing for a trip to Machu Picchu, Peru, and the Amazon River next month by getting shots, taking pills soaking their clothes in a chemical that wards off insects.

"Basically any big that drops on you will die," Hawkins said. "I don't know what that does to you, but. ..."

Hawkins said his wife, Misti, has done most of the planning for the 10-day trip. The family originally planned to go to Brazil but decided against because of its problems with the Dengue Fever.

"I was a little nervous about my quarterback coming back with Dengue Fever," Hawkins said.

He acknowledged that being so far from home and likely cut off from communicating with his assistants will be difficult on him. But he is looking forward to seeing ancient Incan ruins and other sites.

He said he generally fidgets and worries much more in the summer as it is because he can have only limited contact with his players under NCAA rules.

"I'll be nervous as heck," he said. "I'll be checking my cell phone every five minutes going, 'You get service here?'

"When you're the head coach or the director of anything, you never truly go on vacation."

Some in Hawkins position might be inclined to retreat to a five-star beach resort and lounge in the sun instead of the adventure the family has planned. It's all part of Hawkins' live-life-to-its-fullest mentality.

Hawkins said he is considering blogging on CUBuffs.com during the trip if communication doesn't prove to be too difficult.

Vigo to grayshirt

At least one member of the 2008 Colorado recruiting class won't be in Boulder when the football team reports Aug. 4 and begins practice Aug. 5.

Paul Vigo, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect from New Brunswick, N.J., will delay his enrollment until January, Hawkins said.

Vigo was recruited as an athlete and will likely become either a defensive back or wide receiver for the Buffs.

Hawkins said coaches have planned for Vigo to grayshirt since he signed with the program in February. The move is not a reflection on his academic status.

Kyle - any news on who else is going to Grayshirt or delay enrolment - regardless of whether it has to do with academics etc... I see who HAS arrived on campus et all through Rivals, but any info on expected dates, potential problems (easy 'Tall' don't get too excited - remember we DO have academic requirements at CU, this isn't Lincoln)Thanks... Good article, Kyle. The Buffs are going to be one to watch in 2008. Here's from a recent mailbag Q and A tonight with Stuart Mandel of SI.com:

Usually by the third year, a coach really makes his mark on a program. So what do you see happening with Dan Hawkins at Colorado?
-- Martin, Austin, Texas

The Buffs are definitely a team you'd be smart to watch out for this season. Hawkins' team improved considerably from Year 1 (2-10) to Year 2 (6-7, with upsets over Oklahoma and Texas Tech). This year's team will be far more experienced, what with QB Cody Hawkins entering his second season and the possibility of as many as eight senior starters on defense. And if incoming freshman Darrell Scott -- the nation's top-rated running back recruit last winter -- lives up to the hype, he will give Hawkins exactly the type of elite skill player he's been missing.

The coach finally feels confident enough in his personnel to go to a no-huddle offense, and we may start to see more of the unconventional plays that marked his tenure at Boise State. The bigger question may be the defense, which absolutely tanked at the end of last season and lost its most important player, All-America LB Jordon Dizon.

We'll find out about the state of the Buffs pretty quickly -- after opening against Colorado State and Eastern Washington, Colorado goes through a daunting four-game gauntlet against West Virginia, Florida State, Texas and Kansas. If Hawkins' team can get a win at home against either the Mountaineers or Longhorns, it could set them up for an eight- or nine-win season.

I think they have worked pretty well against a big time program called Oklahoma in recent years....

Where are your facts for your ridiculous statement?

I love that a terrible offense was able to beat the top two football programs of all time!!!(me laughing) Imagine what could happen if the offense was just bad instead of terrible??

27 points didn't come out of thin air?

Posted by shoulder2shoulder on June 26, 2008 at 9:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think Cody had as many passing yards that game as OU had passing & rushing........ I also think charles had as many rushing yards as the GREAT sam bradford had passing.

Posted by buff4ever on June 26, 2008 at 9:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That is funny. Wasn't it Boise State running those plays that beat Oklahoma in a BCS bowl?

Posted by bufffan8 on June 26, 2008 at 9:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Did the defense win the NU game? They gave up 51pts. Although the last 14 were in garbage time. The key play that helped win the OU game was the fake end around and the perfect pass to Sprague for a TD. Had the defensive mastermind Stoops and his team totally fooled.

Posted by buff4ever on June 26, 2008 at 9:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What is even funnier is they were so bad they scsored 65 point on Nebraska last year and still had those terrible statistics. Imagine if they had played Nebraska every game last year what their statistics would have been... Number 1 offense in the nation and undefeated.

Posted by montanabuff on June 26, 2008 at 9:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

talli - question:

Do you go on the Longhorns' websites and decry the fact that Texas was ranked 109th in pass defense last season, and will be starting two redshirt freshmen at safety in 2008? .... and that's a team coming off a ten win season.

Guess what? We know that CU was 6-7 last season, and 2-10 the year before. Pass defense will be an issue. Wide receivers will be an issue. Settling on a running back will be an issue. Try passing along something we don't already know ...

Id like to see a South Park type recreation of the Hawk tour of the Amazon. I can see coach in a wide brimmed straw hat 'coaching up' some local tribe on the zen of hunting wild game while Cody teaches some pygmies to throw a spear - a little self-deprecating humor never hurt anyone.

Ignore tall - anyone who watched every play last year knows Hawkins is right about 'a few plays'. ASU, ISU KU alone represents 3 plays each game that would have made a difference in the outcome - and that would have been a 9 win season.

Urban Meyer - came from a MWC program
Jim Tressel - from a Div 1-AA program

They seem to be doing ok Tall. At least they had some head coaching experience.

"only thing that matters is this season"??? then why have you posted almost 1,000 times about the last 2 seasons?? please give me some links to some info on many thinking he was a big fish in a small pond.

1,800 campers in the last few weeks and only 2 commits, whats the deal??? I saw some pics of the recent USC camp, those are some very impressive looking kids. I sure hope USC doesn't get in any trouble over the reggie bush situation ;)

last year we had just as many commits at this time. Yow know what the outcome was feb. 6. I dont think anybody needs to woorry right now.also, i dont think analyst have a firm grasp on the players that haven't even started their senior season. Their will be a lot of players that will fall off and and ane equal amount that will blow up.

I like everything Dan Hawkins has done and is doing with the program.

Archalon - did you see the trip to Peru on YouTube where Hawk goes to a remote part of the Amazon rainforest, and meets with indigenous people, and says, "We got a lot of mojo and voodoo with this bunch that can really work. When you go out there to hunt and fish, you're represent your tribe and all of your people. It's division 1 hunting and fishing! It's Peru! This ain't gathering and agriculture!"

Hawk is not on the hot seat and will remain the Head Coach at CU for a long, long time.

Tall is only trying to foment dissent where there is none. Tall is nothing more than a muckraker, who enjoys digging up dirt on people. When one is constantly rolling in the muck, the putrid filth eventually starts to cling and never goes away. His previous aliases were "buffwonder" and "2ndbuff". As 2ndbuff, he got slapped by the Daily Camera for trying to smear the character of a former member of the CU athletic department. Subsequently, he changed his moniker to Tallisall.

I don't mind having having the occasional fan from rival schools coming here to talk smack. But, for Tall this has become an unhealthy obsession that consumes much of his time. And, he has been doing this for a long time. Tall does not seem to have anything more productive to do with his life than to talk smack on these forums. Tall, I feel sorry for you. You are going to have to take that burr off your rear end, channel your pursuits into more productive activities, and learn to enjoy what life has to offer instead of continuing with your self-destructive muckraking.

I know that it is only late June but I was a little suprised to see two commits before camp last week and 0 commits after. It sounds like the in-state kids that would have commited early are taking their time - Kanavis' boy, Jack Harris, Jevon Reynolds - was anyone else VERY suprised to see Ryan Hewitt commit to Stanford?

Also does anyone know the connection that Cabral has to Manti Te'o? Or if Dalton Hilliard and Te'O are looking like a package deal? - they have three schools in common CU, Stanford, and UCLA.

Anyone that posts a article from the reputable Tenneseean deserves to be ignored - if anyone on the Daily Camera staff is listening, how about adding an ignore function to this whole process. It works well for me with the pumpers & bashers on the financial sites.

Yes, I am shocked with Hewitt going to Stanford. They already had two 4-star, and one 3-star TEs committed. Jim Harbaugh is doing some masterful recruiting at Stanford, just look at his 2009 class so far.

There's a lot of similarities between Stanford and CU right now and the fact that we are listed with a lot of the same prospects proves it. Two beautiful campuses in desirable locations with great academic reputations. Two young, enthusiastic coaches landing impressive recruits despite recent W/L record. Stanford may start making some noise in the Pac 10 sooner than later and I expect the same from Hawk and the Buffs.

Tall - we all know you are not impressed with Hawk and Cody. We get it. We hear you. You don't need to tell us that anymore. Don't you have anything else to discuss? If not then come back when you do.

Ringo - how about a little more reporting on the summer practices and recruiting. It's nice that Hawk spoke at a dinner and said the same thing he has been saying for a year but wasn't really worth the trip to the Springs for this article.

There could be a lot more similarities between CU and Stanford if our admissions standards weren't so low for out-of-staters. How does Stanford get these kids qualified?

The main reason for improvement will not necessarily be due to the arrival of Bo, but due to the departure of the previous strength and conditioning (S&C) coach. Nebraska players were simply gassed last season due to the tremendous amount of running that was emphasized by the previous S&C coach. Last year, the players did more running than in any other year in the history of Nebraska football. All of this excessive running simply sapped the strength from the players. Quite frankly, the Nebraska players were "weak" and easily pushed off the line of scrimmage. But, I see this changing. Right now, Bo has plenty of talent to work with because Callahan did a good job in recruiting. However, it remains to be seen how well BO can recruit. If Bo can't recruit, then I can easily envision another "slide into mediocrity" as each year passes.

When Hawkins first got hired, Tall made a lot of noise about how Hawkins can't recruit. I don't hear Tall making that same noise any longer because Hawkins has proven to be an excellent recruiter. The foot is now on the other shoe. Now, we get to see whether or not Bo can recruit.

Bo Looks like he should be wearing a helmet and a kiddie leash in that picture - if there ever was a picture that perfectly exemplifies Nebraska Football, that is the one!

Bo is in way over his head, he should have stuck to being a coordinator and riding the coatails of good coaches to NCs.

Read the article. Hayes explains himself. Let me know if you need more help. I'll get my six-year-old daughter to translate for you.

San Jose St is nowhere to be seen on that list...what's with that?

Nebraska Stinks.

Hay Tall - why don't you tell us where coach Cotton cussed - um I mean coached last year? Don't worry I will. He was a volunteer asssitant at Ames High School. Enough said.

And just how much does a 6'8" 350lb man have to drink to be at nearly 2x the limit.

Gee, thanks for clearing that up. It means all your comments about CU's schedule are hokem.

Viva, Dan Hawkins!!!!!!!

Posted by LGDAF on June 27, 2008 at 11:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Buffzilla - I agree with you but the picture that best exemplifies NU football is the one of the kid crying when CU thumped the corn 62-36 back in 2001.

Posted by shoulder2shoulder on June 27, 2008 at 11:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

tall- read the freakin article....it says fsu has two MONSTER non confrence games but the other 2 games suck, thats why they aren't on the list!!!!!WVU has 3 other terrible games and wouldn't be on the list if it wasn't for CU..

Posted by rodrigo on June 27, 2008 at 11:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Dang it shoulder, I promised my daughter she could help tall with that particular logic problem!

Hasta la victoria, CU!

sorry rodrigo!!!

Posted by BUFFZILLA on June 27, 2008 at 12:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Agree with shoulder...tall you're a fool. Your logic only makes sense if WVU and CU were the only teams on eachother OOC schedule, but they're not.

At least CU has the stones to play decent non-con teams, while Nebraska prefers to hide in Lincoln until MID-OCTOBER...that's a total embarrasment.

Posted by rodrigo on June 27, 2008 at 12:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

1 (Colorado) + 1 (Auburn) = 2 ("monster games")

Didn't know we had to go over the math, too.

Posted by BUFFZILLA on June 27, 2008 at 12:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

WVU also plays Villanova, East Carolina, and Marshall. Without playing CU, they would be way down on the list with that soft schedule.

Posted by rodrigo on June 27, 2008 at 12:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

One would think with a pre-season sked like the cornnuts, they'd rank better than 45th.

CU, meanwhile, will be ranked 35th or higher even though it plays the fourth toughest non-conference slate.

Hmmm... seems pretty simple to me.

Posted by BUFFZILLA on June 27, 2008 at 12:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Don't agree at all tall. CU is considered a tough opponent, so WVU and FSU are getting some love for playing us. Meanwhile CU has more stones than any other team in the Big 12 so we are getting some love.

Nebraska doesn't want to leave it's own state and is playing some pansies therefore...no love.

Simple.

Posted by rodrigo on June 27, 2008 at 12:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So is BoP's record as an assistant coach.

So is Barney "Badmouth" Cotton's tough-guy talk.

So is Nebraska's all-time record vs. CU.

So is everything boast that Nebraska will win 9 games.

So is your insistence that Nebraska will have a better defense (though it's hard to imagine it being much worse).

Guess most of what you say here is pretty much meaningless, too.

Posted by nwbuff32 on June 27, 2008 at 12:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Nebraska football= all male orgy.

Posted by BUFFZILLA on June 27, 2008 at 12:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks tall, that's great news for the Buffs this year. Good to know that we still have a chance at a NC.

I worry about NU this year. They might only win 3 games this year, and I'm sure their 45th ranking assumes they will get a couple more. 45th might be a littel optomistic for a brand new head coach and a terrible defense.

Posted by extrapoint on June 27, 2008 at 1 p.m. (Suggest removal)

happens everyday, dont it tall?

also
I loved that post "rankings are meaningless"
Why are you always the one bringing them forth?

we all know your raison d'etre, outside of hating the Hawkins, is to mess with us. I actually appreciate that. It used to be fun, but lately you are getting stale, redundant and dont make any sense. change your user id to "reaching"

From Rivals.com

OVERVIEW: The 2007 season was historically awful for the defense, which allowed the most points and most yards by a Nebraska team since 1948. The Huskers allowed the most points ever in one game (76, to Kansas), forced the lowest number of turnovers in school history and ranked an abysmal 113th in total defense - ahead of only North Texas, UAB, San Diego State, SMU, UTEP, Rice and Minnesota. But a key returnee has given hope that the "Blackshirts" can return to form: With Bo Pelini as defensive coordinator in 2003, Nebraska's defense ranked 11th nationally and forced 47 turnovers. Pelini's influence surely will boost the defense, but he has some serious holes to fill.

GRADE: D

I love it, Hawk playing his son at QB is nepotism, and unfair, but Bo hiring his big brother from Nowhere State "represents familiarity...Grade A+"

I'm glad you hired someone with "youthful exuberance on the recruiting trail", it's too bad it hasn't translated into results yet. You know what they say...potential gets coaches fired.

Good luck: NU: 3-9

Posted by extrapoint on June 27, 2008 at 1:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

when the corncobs slip up on opening day, will Bo panic? or will he settle down and calmly sort out the mistakes? He has two no contest eclairs after
that to get everyone on the field on the same page...... because after that the bottom falls out.

I hate to say this, after the mess he laid here at CU, but if Bo is smart, he will leave Watson completely alone.

Posted by BUFFZILLA on June 27, 2008 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think tall tipped his hand a little with his "kicking us when we're down" comment. Not that anyone had any doubt who his team was, but it always drove me nuts when he used the words "us" and "we" when talking about the buffs.

Cosgrove wasn't the only problem - by the way, I read that he landed a job as a volunteer assistant coach for a high school team in Wisconsin...no joke.

Posted by bufffan8 on June 27, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tall - Cosgrove doesn't seem that bad.

From Huskers.com in 2007:
The Blackshirt defense boasted an impressive rise in the national rankings each of the past two years under Cosgrove. The Huskers have been in the top 25 nationally in scoring defense (24th in 2006, 25th in 2005) and pass efficiency defense (13th in 2006, 10th in 2005) each of the last two years, while posting top-40 national rankings each season in rushing defense. NU also ranked 11th nationally in rush defense in Cosgrove’s first season in 2004.

Under Cosgrove’s tutelage, Nebraska led the nation in sacks (50 total, 4.17 per game) and tackles for loss (10.33 per game) in 2005. The 50 sacks were the second-most ever by a Blackshirt defense, including a Big 12 Conference-leading 9.5 sacks by defensive end Adam Carriker while Barry Turner added an NU freshman-record six sacks before being named a freshman All-American.

Cosgrove has recruited many outstanding athletes during his career, and was named to recruiting analyst Tom Lemming’s “other big-time recruiting names,”

Posted by bufffan8 on June 27, 2008 at 1:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Maybe he didn't have the athletes to play any other defense.

this is really funny stuff guys, enjoyed all your comments but it is pretty obvious to me that the Tall guy or whatever his name is obtained his football knowledge from a cracker jack box

by the way, one thing a lot of Buffs fans seem to be overlooking is Hawk's ability to schmooze the money men...trust me on this, Hawk will raise an incredible amount of cash for this program planting CU on the road to match the Texas's and OU's of this world.. don't underestimate this ability of his, a very important ingredient for a successful program..

Posted by bufffan8 on June 27, 2008 at 1:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tall - thanks for the clip. I especially liked the fake FG for a TD.

Wathching closely it would appear that your defense is a bit slow and can't tackle. Your o-line and QB weren't very good either. Bo can't teach speed. 4 wins is about right for you guys this year. Maybe 5 since your schedule is sooo weak.

Nice catch, Buffzilla.

There goes what little remained of Tall's integrity.

"I'm a Buff, through and through"
yet there will never be an initiated positive comment for either Hawkins.
Will we ever learn the connection?
"throught and through" doesnt seem true when your bitterness to Hawk trancends the fan part. You have definitely given us the picture you want them to fail at the expense of the entire team."Want" them to fail? Excuse me for that gross understatement.

It boils down to that no coach in the country could hav eturned this program around more quickly than Hawkins. The program was in major dis-repair and now its on the right track. This is a horrible year to have the sched as tough as it is, but if the Buffs play well it will land another top-15 recruiting class. Regardless, 2009's team should be absolutely dominating.

No one believes you. We know where your loyalties lie. Stop trying to pass yourself off as a buff fan.

Cody will be on top of the QB heap in the Big 12 this year, not Bradford. Write that prediction down tall. Even ahead of Chase Daniel i'll say.

tall is the type of dude that snipes from afar, and is never, no never, willing to join the fray. it is 'o so easy to go negative, especially for the never was.(forget the has-been part). in any event, the d-backs are only as good as the studs putting the quarterback on his/her heels, if not buttocks. how the coaching staff developes the rush up front, not to mention the run-d, will tell the defensive tale. colorado has two gigantic games this year: kansas, the graceful class of the league. and nebraska, well, you call them as you see them. both on the road, and both will determine the quality of what 'hawk has produced.

Tall - true fans show up for spring games. Your transparent comments are so telling it's not even worth discussing. BTW my elementary school coach yelled at us too - just like your boy Barney. You know what he didn't do though? He never bailed any of us out of jail and hid our handguns in his own office after we beat the shi* out of our girlfriends and dragged them down the stairs by their hair. (We actually never dealt with that situation - unlike your precious "Sal is Dead Go big Red Huskers) Good to see you supporting a program that is so classy - show up at a game you true pus** fan you - let us meet you in person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update on Josh Williams -
A Denton County Judge lowered his charge from a 2nd degree felony to a class A misdemeanor. Williams will be on two years probation, he must complete 120 hours of community service, along with paying a $500 fine.

correct
any one other and in any other state than Texas (or NE)it would be some hard time. Instead he will be on the field this fall.

maybe we will just sic rswright on him. punishment enough right there....the ol meat grinder

All other factors and identity aside, an average citizen would do 2 yrs in County for the same offense with no plea.

Either way, right or wrong, I gaurantee that Judicial Affairs at NU wont even consider the matter. They'll say he was a recruit, not on campus yet, blah, blah.

BUT - If an institution is serious about producing educated and productive citizens, the minute the name is on the LOI, the school should assume responsibilty for his future.

Applys to CU as well.
