Bzdelik loses out on top recruit

6-foot-8 forward chooses Memphis

Memphis head coach John Calipari conducted an hour-long interview this week on Jim Rome's national radio program.

With all five starting members of his national runner-up Tigers currently testing the NBA draft waters, Calipari was asked how he was going to get his program back to the Final Four next season.

The simple answer: Recruiting.

"We're hoping to get another talented kid on Thursday," Calipari said.

Sure enough, Wesley Witherspoon -- one of the top uncommitted players in the class of 2008 -- announced on Thursday that he had decided to play at Memphis next season.

He also considered Florida, Texas, Virginia and Colorado.

Jeff Bzdelik's NBA experience will help him in the long run as the former Denver Nuggets head coach attempts to rebuild CU's downtrodden program.

But Calipari's recent success at the collegiate level -- the Tigers have piled up an absurd 104-10 record in the last three seasons -- won out this time.

"To be honest, it was all about coach Cal," Witherspoon told rivals.com. "He will help me get the most out of my game. ... I sat down with my family and looked at all of my options. Memphis was the best for me."

Witherspoon, a 6-foot-8 forward from the Atlanta area, is the second promising recruit from the state of Georgia the Buffs have lost out on this spring.

Ebuka Anyaorah decided to go to the University of Georgia after giving a verbal commitment to CU following his visit to Boulder in March.

Toby Veal, a forward from Savannah, Ga., headlines Bzdelik's 2008 freshmen class.

Austin Dufault, Trey Eckloff and Nate Tomlinson also signed in November.

Bzdelik is expected to return from a recruiting trip to Australia today and plans to meet with Jeremy Williams before commenting on the sophomore forward's status in the program.

If Williams decides to join Xavier Silas and Caleb Patterson in transferring from CU after the spring semester, Bzdelik would have four scholarships to use for this period, which runs through May 21.

All good fisherman know that sometimes you've got to cast a few times before the big one bites!

I think the fact that CU is even being considered by players of this caliber speaks volumes about Bzdelik.

Keep up the GREAT work Coach!!

Agreed NCBUFF. It's going to be tough for CU to recruit this caliber of player for the time being - they need to start winning - but I love that Buzz and staff don't have a defeatest attitude and are going for it anyway. Something Patton and Barnett never did much of. And you're right; if they keep recruiting top talent in numbers, they are sure to get some to bite.

Might not be the worst thing to lose out on him...lots of national services are saying he might not qualify academically

With the kids we have + some top new freshman we will be just fine... Sure, any team could use a Witherspoon but we will pick up another solid player or two that will fit in.
GO BUFFS
