Maiava headed to UCLA

Former University of Colorado offensive lineman Kai Maiava, who announced in April that he would transfer, will evidently end up at UCLA.

Maiava started at guard last fall as a true freshman for CU but was then converted to fullback for spring ball. After the completion of CU's spring drills, he announced that he would transfer to be closer to his family. Maiava is from Hawaii, and he has numerous relatives on the West Coast, including a brother who plays for Southern Cal.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Maiava will play for the Bruins. UCLA is coached by former CU coach Rick Neuheisel.

Kai Maiava already had contacted UCLA when he was deciding to leave or not. This was not "Slick Rick" poaching our guys, but rather Kai Maiava asked about the opportunity and Neuheisel being smart enough to say yes.

Hawkins gave Maiava premission to search out a school on the West Coast. Who was most likely to have a spot for him, USC or UCLA? If Maiava wanted to go to SoCal, UCLA was his best chance.

I'm Buff fan 1st and always; but I have read in the local papers and seen on local news reports that Rick is actually doing goods thing at UCLA.

Some people learn from their mistakes. I'm waiting to see if Rick has before I pass any judgement.

I loved to have Maiva as a Buff last year. He will be missed. I guess the position change and his family situation were the reasons for his move. I wish him well

I posted on this site when I read that Kai was leaving the program. I knew it was sour grapes at the time (hey the guy just isn't good enough to start) and that he was going to end up with Ricky. Let's see New Weasel make a better football player out of him. Hopefully we will see him in a bowl in a couple of years. Then Rick can tell everybody what Colorado has and has not then.

Meanwhile in Boulder we sitting tapping fingers on the desk waiting for all the talk to materialize into wins on the field.

He'll win 9 or ten games. Rick is a winner and has Norm Chow as his OC.

Tal, you just lost all credibility (again). You obviously know nothing about the train wreck that was UCLA spring football. 9-10 wins? They will be lucky to win 6.

Posted by tallisal on May 20, 2008 at 11:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

UCLA was 6-7 last season.

They beat BYU, California and Oregon (all top 20 teams)

Train wreck huh???

With Rick and Norm at the Helm that'll go to 9 or 10 wins this season.

Hmmmmm, what other teams went 6-7 last year??

Posted by nwbuff32 on May 20, 2008 at 11:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Lets see if your reading comprehension can grasp this. If you still think 9-10 wins is likely, then you have no business commenting on anything football related ever again.

Fall questions
1. QBs need a rabbit's foot: It seemed like a great thing that new offensive coordinator Norm Chow had two experienced quarterbacks to work with. Then -- poof -- he had none, with Patrick Cowan, the designated starter, and Ben Olson going down practically simultaneously the day before the spring scrimmage with injuries. Cowan's knee injury ended his 2008 season before it began, while Olson had foot surgery the first week of May and will be out six to eight weeks. Olson should be ready to re-take the reins at the start of fall practices, but his injury history suggests JC transfer Kevin Craft needs to be ready for the opener against Tennessee.

2. Try to block it out: The offensive line looked, well, terrible this spring. Part of that is learning on the fly vs. a quick defense. The other part: A lack of talent and experience. It further hurt when veteran Aleksey Lanis retired because of on-going knee problems. The only sure-things are Micah Reed, an eight-game starter at guard who moved to center, and tackle Micah Kia, also an eight-game starter last year.

3. Scheme and motivation enough?: New coach Rick Neuheisel didn't inherit a full cupboard of talent. No matter how much his optimism and motivational tricks force grins upon his players and no matter how much his coordinators Chow and DeWayne Walker can outflank foes, the personnel is lacking. The question is can their smoke-and-mirrors sustain the positive momentum the new coaching staff engendered when it arrived in Westwood?

Schedule:
Sept. 1 Tennessee L
Sept. 13 @ BYU L
Sept. 20 Arizona W
Sept. 27 Fresno State L
Oct. 4 Washington State W
Oct. 11 @ Oregon L
Oct. 18 Stanford L
Oct. 25 @ California W
Nov. 8 Oregon State L
Nov. 15 @ Washington W
Nov. 28 @ Arizona State L
Dec. 6 USC L

9-10? More like 4.

Posted by tallisal on May 20, 2008 at 11:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The QB position will be fine.

Kevin Craft 6'5",Possesses good mobility and a strong arm ... Has experience at the Division IA level, having played at San Diego State prior to transferring to Mt. San Antonio College ... Craft has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

2007 - He completed 313 of 511 passes (61.3%) for 4,231 yards, 44 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as a redshirt sophomore at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, CA ... Led team to a record of 10-3 and Southern California Junior College championship

So you see, it's not like the guy hasn't ever played.

In fact, those QB injuries just moved him up on the depth chart and he is playing for two of the greatest QB coaches in the world.

Posted by rodrigo on May 20, 2008 at 11:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Wow. And here I thought I'd be the one dragging out the schedule to make my point. Ricky needs a quarterback to win. Bet he'd take Cody at this point.

Just like with Dr. Tom, I'm keepin' a record of these know-it-all predictions vomited up from a safe distance well before the start of the season. Just in case anyone here forgets...

Posted by rodrigo on May 20, 2008 at 12:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Regarding Craft: well, I guess if he can do it against the competition at Mt. SAC, he'll have no problem with Oregon, USC, Arizona State, BYU, Tennessee, Cal, Fresno and Oregon State.

Nice try.

Posted by tallisal on May 20, 2008 at 12:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Craft may end up being a superstar given the opportunity.

He's for sure getting the best two QB coaches in the nation to teach him.

At 6'5" and the strong arm he has, Craft has the proper physical tools to be a great QB.

actually NWbuff brought up the win loss record last season.

The differance between CU and UCLA's record last season is UCLA's coach got fired for it and CU's coach is still working.

They have Rick and Norm now.

BTW, how many job offers has Hawk gotten since going 2-10? Food for thought.

Posted by rodrigo on May 20, 2008 at 3:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The difference is the vast majority of CU's fans are perfectly happy with the direction the program's headed; Dorrell was the head coach at UCLA for five years and had the program headed in the wrong direction: 6-7, 6-6, 10-2, 7-6, 6-7. That's a downward trajectory, son.

Wow,30 posts and no one commented on the fact that Neuhiesel has never built a program only ridden the coattails of already stocked programs and running them into the ground.

Norm Chow is a/the top quarterback guru in CFB (Neuhiesel is NOT no. 2), but 2 quarterback coaches does not a top head coach make.

I would not be suprised however if in a few years they do start producing, but in no way does anyone realistically think they will charge out of the gates this coming season to a 9-10 win season! I don't think even UCLA diehards are that delusional!

Uh. Sorry. Flyer likes 8 wins for the Buffs.

And no, I don't think a losing season means Hawkins should be fired. The mess Barney left precludes any quick solutions.

Posted by tallisal on May 21, 2008 at 12:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

To bad the expectations at CU are so low anymore.

At OU Stoops took a team that John Blake went 12-22 and turned them into champions. He still hasn't looked back.

When asked in 1999 how long it would take to turn the team around, Stoops replied, "this in the University of Oklahoma, we expect to win every year, we expect to compete for championships every year"...

So there you have it, not all coaches require years to turn a team around.

Posted by extrapoint on May 21, 2008 at 1:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

CU expectations are low?
I beg to differ
I may have been listening to your delusions so long I may be deluding myself, but didnt we beat OU last year?
And the time stoops looked back before that he made a classic fool out of Tall and his runaway tongue by losing to Boise State.

We expect to win, but unlike the desperate Bufooners and Cornsuckers, our entire lives arent crushed when we dont.

When "we" (not you, Tall) get tired of Hawk we will saunter on down to the Bob Stoops store and pick one out......right?

When you can use an intelligent comparison you might fool someone into thinking your sole purpose on this board isn't to cast aspersions on the program.

Posted by rodrigo on May 21, 2008 at 2:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Nice.

And you are right, Tall. CU is not Oklahoma (though the Buffs went them one better in '07). CU is striving to become a team, like Oklahoma, that competes for championships every year. No shame in that, my friend.

Running down another program that has enjoyed much more success than CU doesn't help the program at all.

Defeatism is acceptance of defeat without struggle.

Shrugging one's shoulders year after year when Hawkins fails to deliver the goods and talking about snow skiing will never bring about change.

This is his year to prove himself. He's got a tough schedule and needs to win. No excuses in football.

Posted by tallisal on May 22, 2008 at 11:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't think anyone expected to win as soon as Hawk arrived, but going from 7-6 to 2-10 was a disaster in his first season.

6-7 still fails to match Barnett's last season.

I know expectations were high with Hawk's magnificent WAC record (thank you Chris Peterson) but the reality hasn't come close.

Posted by baBUFF on May 22, 2008 at 12:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Going from 7-6 to 2-10 can only be considered a disaster if you assume that Barnett would have done better under the circumstances. You'd be crazy to think GB would have gotten another 7 win season out of that squad.

The 2-10 team (with a few exceptions) featured a roster of Div II talent (thanks to barneys word-class recruiting efforts) coming off the most embarrassing loss in program history. Add to that the cloud of a recruiting/sex scandal that would have undoubtedly followed the team all year, and you're telling me we would have been better off in 2006 with GB at the helm? Even if he had managed to eek out 4-5 wins, we wre still heading in the wrong direction.

Now, I hate to see the Buffs lose as much as anyone, but I'm willing to swallow one 2 win season if it means the program will be in better shape in the long run as a result. I know Hawk and crew still have a lot of work to do, but here's what I know has happened between years 1 and 2 of the Hawk era:

1.Wins are up (despite more difficult schedule)
2.Recruiting is improved - we now comete with the UT's of the world for blue-chip prospects.
3.Donations are up
4.Attendance is up
5.Facilities are improved
6.Fan morale and enthusiasm are MUCH improved

There's still work to be done to get us back in the national championship picture, but we're a lot closer than we were two years ago so I feel good about that. Can't wait for year 3. Go Buffs!

Nebraska Sucks.

Posted by tallisal on May 22, 2008 at 1:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Recruiting improved?

Darrell Scott made the class.

But he came to CU only because his Mom's Brother plays there. Not because of great recruiting.

I agree it was a decent class (not great) but lets not say CU is competing with UT, they're already full of 4 and 5 star recruits for 2009.

Regardless, this is year 3 and Hawkins is already qualifying the year because of the "tough" schedule paving the way for another 5 or 6 win season.

If he's as good as people think, Hawk should have a winning season year in and year out regardless of how tough the schedule is.

The coach seems to be lacking in confidence this year.

Still not coming close to competing with Texas or Oklahoma.

Texas is loaded with 18 highly rated recruits for 2009 and Oklahoma has 11 already.

Posted by baBUFF on May 22, 2008 at 3 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Can't compete with Texas and Oklahoma? Last I checked the Buffs beat the Oklahoma juggernaut with all their 4 and 5 star recruits, then proceeded to beat Texas and the Mack Brown recruiting juggernaut in a battle for the best high school RB in the nation. Not bad for an overratted coach from the WAC.

Of course Darrell's cousin was a factor in him choosing CU, but an elite HS player who's goal is to make it to the NFL is also thinking about his career prospects. Perhaps he took a look at the recent RBs coming out of UT (R. Williams - flop, C. Benson - flop) and didn't want to be the next one on that list. And before you get crazy, Benson was a flop well before D Scott picked a school - the recent pepper spray boat party probably just makes Scott feel even better about his choice. Rex Grossman would have better luck handing the ball off to a ham sandwich.

UT and OU are loaded with highly rated recruits this time every year, but it doesn't always translate to wins, if you don't believe me ask Bobby Stoops about his last trip to the Boulder.

so what if they already have 18, im sure they had close to the same amount at this point last year.Where did they rank last year with rivals?14. tell me how cu is not competing with them? Just think if mack brown left his office he might be able to get get top 5 recruiting classes.

Ryan Leaf was a 1st round draft pick too, and had a mulit-million dollar contract - tell me he wasn't a flop. It's possible to be both a high pick and a flop. Besides I'm guessing Darrell's goal isn't to get one big contract so he can blow it all on weed and yoga mats like Mr. Williams.

Now i'm not saying that "CU recruits just as good as UT and OU"...yet. But I feel like we're finally in a position to compete for some of these kids - something that never would have happened 3 years ago. Guys like Katoa, Givens, and Major never would have even returned Barney's phone calls, much less D Scott, but that's changed now. And I like that we're keeping top in-state talent, which also wasn't happening 3 years ago.

As for Hawkins 1st rounders - how about Ryan Clady this year, recruited by Hawk to a WAC school nonetheless. I doubt he'll be the last.
