Emily Childs and Emily Talley share more than just the same first name. They're both from northern California, they're both freshmen on the CU golf team, and together they've finished first and second among Buff players in each of their first three college tournaments.
That trend remained intact Tuesday as the Buffs wrapped up the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational at the Omni Interlocken Golf Course.
Childs finished second individually for the second time this season and Talley placed 16th in leading the Buffs to a third-place showing in the 20-team tournament at the Omni.
"They're good players," CU coach Anne Kelly said of the freshmen. "I see them taking us to the next level."
In the Buffs' first three tournaments of the season, Childs has finished second, seventh and second. Talley has gone seventh, 10th and 16th. As a team, CU has placed second, sixth and third.
The Buffs, the defending champions in the Heather Farr tournament, finished the three-round event with an 867 total, behind Notre Dame (858) and Texas Tech (863). Colorado State (870) was fourth.
"We really wanted to win this one," Childs said. "But I don't think anyone played great today."
The only individual to finish ahead of Childs was Kay Hoey of Cal State Long Beach, who closed with a 71 for a 9-under-par 207 total. Childs, who shot an even-par 72 Tuesday, was three shots back along with Cal Davis' Alice Kim.
Childs was happy with a third straight top-seven performance to start her college career, but is setting her sights higher."I want to win one," she said. "I just have to make it happen. I've been hitting it real good, but I have to start dropping some putts."
As for Talley, she had some spectacular moments en route to her 1-under-par 71 Tuesday. Most notably, she holed out for an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole on the Vista Nine, draining an 80-yard approach with a sand wedge. She also recorded four birdies, but offset those with three bogeys and a double bogey.
"I'm putting pressure on myself to keep (her strong start to the season) going," said Talley, who ended up at 1-over-par 217 overall. "If you try to keep going lower, it's hard. But that's what motivates me."
Talley and Childs have known each other for about six years from competing in northern California tournaments; Talley is from Napa and Childs from Alameda.
"We kind of recruited each other," Talley said. "I sometimes wonder if we each would have come (to CU) if the other didn't."
While there were plenty of good players at the Farr tournament, the most notable wasn't competing. Hollis Stacy, a three-time winner of the U.S. Women's Open, served as a rules official at the Omni. Stacy, now a Colorado resident, played on the LPGA tour at the same time as Kelly, and both were friends of Heather Farr, a former LPGA player who died in 1993 after battling breast cancer.
