CU spikers bounce back to rout Tech

Colorado halts two-match losing streak with sweep

The Red Raiders' arrival in Boulder couldn't have come at a better time for the Colorado volleyball team.

And their stay didn't last long.

The Buffs -- coming off a difficult road trip in which they were swept by Baylor and No. 2 Nebraska -- bounced back with a crisp match against Texas Tech on Wednesday at the Coors Events Center.

CU, which had to go five games to beat Kansas and Texas A&M in its previous conference home games, made quick work of the Big 12 bottom-feeding Red Raiders with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-11 sweep.

Go start the bus? The visitors acted like their ride to the airport was about to leave them behind from the time the national anthem ended until match point.

"I don't think they played very well at all tonight. I think it's hard when a team doesn't show up to keep playing at your level and keep playing at a really high level the whole time," CU senior middle blocker Lauren Schaefer said after finishing with seven kills and hitting .700 for the match. "And I don't think we let up at any time. Everyone just kept playing Colorado volleyball, and I'm really proud of the team for doing that. ...

"I think that's definitely a sign of maturity."

Another sign of maturity: The Buffs obviously weren't looking ahead to Saturday's match against No. 3 Texas. After taking care of business against the Red Raiders (5-13 overall, 0-7 Big 12), the Buffs (9-6, 3-3) have a chance to make a statement about the current state of the program against the Longhorns.

CU, which only won six games last season, was unable to beat then No. 21 Colorado State and No. 8 Florida earlier this season at home.

"This is a great opportunity for us," head coach Pi'i Aiu said. "I always look at playing ranked teams as an opportunity. We get Texas at home. What more can you ask for?"

Emilee Sisco led the Buffs with 12 kills on Wednesday. In the second game she tallied seven of them while Texas Tech managed only nine as a team.

"I feel like I've been working on a lot of things in practice and getting more consistent," Sisco said. "At halftime we went into the locker room and said we need to come out right now and finish this in three games, not go to four or five. That was the mindset we were in."

Alex Buth had seven kills and seven digs, Schylur Edelman had seven kills and Callie Webster added seven digs for CU. On the other side of the net, Texas Tech had an attack percentage of .061 with Caroline Courtney recording eight of the team's 27 kills.

"I don't think we're where we need to be by any means yet. We have a lot of work to do, but that's what we're looking for," Aiu said. "We've got to go out and control matches. I thought we did that tonight. We stayed aggressive on them, we kept playing defense, we took good swings for points. We're getting there slowly."

The Buffs improved to 21-4 all-time against Texas Tech but have an 8-20 record in the series with Texas, including losses in the last eight meetings.

"They're a physical, tall team so we need to take smart, aggressive shots," Schaefer said. "Serving is going to be a key. We just need to do things on our side of the court that we have control of."
