LAWRENCE, Kan. -- There are no quick fixes or easy answers to what ails the Colorado football team.
The defense can only stop opponents for so long. The offensive line is spotty. The team lacks a player capable of making plays on his own at quarterback. The majority of skill position players who saw significant playing time in a 30-14 loss to No. 16 Kansas on Saturday, would probably see considerably less action on most other Big 12 Conference teams.
Chalk up a third straight loss and the 10th consecutive setback against a rank team on the road. The Buffs hung in there for awhile Saturday, but eventually sunk into another sobering example of how little room for error there is if the Buffs are going to beat top-25 competition.
KOA radio reported Colorado coach Dan Hawkins told his team at halftime Saturday that how it played in the second half would be a defining moment. The team failed to come through and now must hope Hawkins was off the mark with his assessment of how critical those 30 minutes would be.
"They played better than we did," Hawkins said, succinctly summarizing how the Buffs allowed a close game toget away from them after intermission.
Colorado could have had a cushion but squandered two first-half scoring opportunities with interceptions thrown by quarterback Cody Hawkins, who was not under a tremendous amount of pressure on either play. Hawkins also inexplicably retreated into his end zone on a third-down play in the second quarter and was tackled for a safety as he tried to evade the pass rush. That play gave the Jayhawks the lead for good.
"That's a play that can't happen," offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich said.
Cody Hawkins explained it this way, "I probably should have stepped up and ran, and, hey, if they sack me, they sack me, rather than trying to get outside and make something happen."
The Buffs held the Jayhawks and the sixth-ranked pass offense in the country in check until midway through the third quarter when quarterback Todd Reesing once again rose up and began making plays with his arm and his feet, as he has done for three consecutive years now against CU. Many of those plays came in tandem with tailback Jake Sharp who ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
The Buffs held the Jayhawks to just one of seven third-down conversions in the first half, but Kansas found ways to make those plays in the second half converting five of eight en route to scoring three second-half touchdowns.
Kansas went back to its bread and butter when it needed a play, with Reesing completing seven passes to wide receiver Kerry Meier for 70 yards. CU defensive backs were unable to keep the ball out of the hands of the nation's second leading receiver.
"Todd Reesing started ballin', man," CU safety Ryan Walters said. "He does a great job keeping a play alive and finding holes. I give him credit. We just didn't do a good enough job in the second half."
Reesing finished the game well below his season average of 347 passing yards, but he was efficient completing 27 of 34 passes for 256 yards and a score.
The Buffs gave up consecutive 78 and 76-yard scoring drives in a span of 4 minutes late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. They also scored a touchdown in that span, but immediately lost any momentum they had gained.
With about 10 minutes remaining and facing a 16-point deficit, CU coaches turned to backup quarterback Matt Ballenger for the second week in a row to get the redshirt freshman some experience. Ballenger had no more success than Hawkins.
Coach Dan Hawkins said he did not believe his defense wore down in the second half, and he also said Kansas made no significant adjustments at halftime that led it to 21 second-half points.
"They just made plays," he said.
The Buffs return home 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play with a home game for parents' weekend next week against Kansas State. It's probably still too early at the season's halfway point to label a game a must win, but the matchup with the Wildcats looks to be crucial if this CU team is going to play in a bowl game for the second consecutive season.
"We've got to move the ball," Dan Hawkins said when asked how his team can improve. "We got to stop people. Play better on special teams. We got to coach better. It's the whole deal."
Kansas improved to 5-1 and 2-0 after overcoming a deficit for the second straight week. The Jayhawks have now won 17 of their past 19 games dating back to the start of last season.
"We played very well on defense and made a lot of plays when we had to," KU coach Mark Mangino said.

Hawkins... 2 int & a safety! Get him out of there!

I hate coach Hawkins player selection. Why are we running Sumler for 1 yard per play with Scott on the bench?
Why are we passing to Cody Crawford (two picks on Crawford which were both partially his fault) with Josh Smith and McKnight on the bench.
Why do we play the deer-in-the-headlights Cody Hawkins at QB. He took a safety that was entirely his fault. He has two picks that are partially his fault. The guy has lost his confidence and he is playing awful. Get him out of the game.
Coach Hawkins has a hard-on for players without talent playing ahead of guys that can actually make plays on a Big XII level.
I was a huge Hawk supporter a few weeks ago, but he is losing me faster than my 401 K is losing value.

The Cody era needs to end. I used to defend the kid as "smart," but that stupid safety changed my mind on that. He now, officially hurts our team more than he helps.
Good call on the player choices...
Cody --> Ballenger
Sumler --> Scott
Williams --> Smith
Get it together coaches!

They should start Bellenger in the second half. Cody walked into the safety, is 5 for 14 with some really poor passes and of course a key tippedat the line pass. He threw the late int. into double coverage; a very weak throw that he just "winged". Well, then at least we then didn't have to watch Goodman miss the f.g. But he might just have made it and CU could have had a lead at half. Even that last play was absurd, why not throw it down to the endzone?? Wing that one with no time left!

Half time and it's 9-7 Kansas
Cody Hawkins is 5 for 14 with 38 yards, 1 TD and 2 picks. He has 3 carries for 6 yards. He has taken a sack for a safety.
Honestly, there are 3 other QB’s on CU’s roster that could put together a weak stat line like that. Time to yank your kid Coach Hawk. Do what is right for the program.
Sumler: 3 carries for 2 yards. Let’s keep feeding him the ball!

When did Cody lose his accuracy? He was so much better last year. What happened? His best strength used to be his decision making and his mental approach to the game. Those traits somewhat made up for his lack of physical skills.
But the 2008 Cody Hawkins is a mental case that looks lost on the field. He is hurting his team with his play. Simple as that.

Why are they giving the ball to stewart when we need to pick up a yard.. Put in a short yardage back.. Sumler or Scott? It blows my mind. Also Cody Hawkins is way to Short he has no arm strength. and lastly our play calling is horrible to...

PLAY CALLING IS HORRIBLE.. They need to find away to get Scott the ball.. put him at the slot

Glad to see Sumler back on the field in the 2nd half. I was getting worried they might replace him with Scott.
Cody is the worst running QB I've ever seen. Get him off the field. He is playing horrible football. No excuse with this game.

If Cody starts this next series (there are 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter), Coach Hawkins was lying about making the QB spot available to the best player. Cody Hawkins is no longer the best player at QB on the Colorado roster.

OUR D LINE needs to get closer to line of scrimmage there just so far away from the ball.. scoot up a little might get a little more pressure on Reesing..

Our coaching staff is just terrible this season.

We need to get Smith out of the game ASAP. More passes to the slow and weak Cody Crawford. Why are we, all of a sudden, trying to win this game?
More Sumler, more Crawford, let's use Moyd, maybe some more Cody Hawkins running plays. Let's go back to our 1st half strategy of tying to lose this game.

Sumler with another drop! Is Sumler a stud or what! Sumler needs to replace Stewart as the primary RB.
I honestly hope Darrell Scott transfers. Dan Hawkins doesn't deserve a top prospect when Coach is committed to playing ineffective and inadequate players like Sumler.

NOW you put in Ballenger? NOW, when you've already blown the game? Here's a hint coach Hawk, the time to put him in was at the BEGINNING of the second half. You know, like Kansas did against you two years ago to outcoach you and beat you. You're a terrible coach.

With this horrible coaching (in all aspects), I'd be shocked if CU wins 3 more games this year.
Cody Hawkins is 8 for 22 right now with two more picks and he took an unnecessary safety. I can’t imagine the other QB’s could play much worse. Seriously, they are 3 star recruits as well. It’s impossible for them to play much worse!

We are not losing games like this because our players are no as talented as the Kansas players. We are losing because our coaches are choosing not to play our most talented players and the lesser talented players that are on the field are not being coached up properly.
This is a loss that is 110% on the coaches.

Our offense looks terrible, I hope it all because the offensive line is bad ("because of injury"). Otherwise this coaching staff (Helfrich) is completely lost.
Posted by salsajohn on October 11, 2008 at 1:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
CU's offense looks terrible, first and foremost, because Cody Hawkins is playing so poorly. The O-line is banged up beyond belief and the running game is not there, but that does not excuse the fact that Cody's awful play is the primary culprit.
Why Sumler is on the field instead of Scott is inexcusable. I’m disgusted with Coach Hawkins.

pretty much as expected, Cody played poorer than I thought, the o-line just got pushed around, special teams looked bad, the defense is solid though.
hard game to watch, espn camera crews made it really tough to see the whole field and replays were taking precedence over the live plays
we lost to a superior team and we gave em plenty, we'll be back next week

I don't think Ballenger looked bad all things considered. He throws a nice ball and can run. He should start vs K State.
Also while Speedy is great he is not a 3rd and 2 up the middle back w/ this pathced together O line. Run him outside! Try some option plays and play action, and throw to the TE's.
Boy does Sumler suck.

who else noticed josh smith standing on the sidelines most of the first half when we had the ball? he is the only wide receiver on our team that can make a play?
i would be happy if i could get aric goodman's scholarship back and dan hawkins contract extension back.
hawkins and bohn have cleaned up our program and i commend them on that, but we do not have any results on the field and i don't want to hear any of that 3,4,5 years to rebuild a program excuse.
barnett could do more with our talent than hawkins.

Everyone knew Kansas was a good home team and few of us really thought CU could win this one. The next four games? Two very winable games at home (K-State and Iowa St) and maybe even a W over pathetic TxA&M on the road.
Next week with the Mildcats is key.

WigginsBuff??????? this game was very winnable, KU didn't do anything spectacular and if you think we actually have a chance the next few games, you are smoking crack!!!!!! I'm sick of all of this talk about when D Scott is going to have is brakeout game and then people predicting us to win. we are the worst team in the big 12 as of today, ISU could beat us if we played tomarow. Baylor's qb has more talent than all of our QB's. They must have a quarterbacks coach at the other Big 12 schools, cuz we obviously don't have one.

What is up with Scott? I really hope he is hurt, because even a Freshmen Scott is ten times better then Sumler. If he isn't hurt and he is just going to sit on the sideline, the dude is going to transfer, I would too!
By the way Hawk if you get your dumb OC an extension your a retard. Your son is a midget and your OC is a retard, and the both need to go!

whoa nolan, you're going a bit overboard
the offensive line didn't change from last week, so yeah that is a weak point and something you have to point your finger at.
KU didn't do anything spectacular because our defense did a great job of shutting him down.
no ISU could not beat us tomorrow, yes, Baylor has a better qb but the buffs have more talent overall and will finish ahead of the bears when the dust settles

yeah, I did, didn't think he played well at all, But when he hit j-fly to make it 16-14, he had us right back in the game. Ballenger showed that he has the tools but he didn't play well enough to take the starting job. We're stuck with Cody for at least another week.

on coach hawkins radio show on 850 koa last wednesday night he was asked about how matt ballenger played against texas......dan hawkins didn't say anything positive about what ballenger did, he turned the wrong way on a play and he made a couple unpositive comments. fact of the matter is, he put 7 points on the board. dan hawkins is going to play his son, so let's just throw in the towel boys and hope for next year.........dan hawkins also said he knows what he is doing? really? do you really? i think not

Before many of you start turning on both Hawkins, you need to realize that our O line is young and inexperienced and the running game never gelled. Granted, Cody's not Chase Daniel, but he made some nice runs to pick up yardage and one of his interceptions was stripped away. We just need to build some momentum and we still have a good chance to get 6 or 7 wins. I still think Cody is a better option than Ballenger, though it's important for Ballenger to get some more playing time when it matters.

Can you believe this performance the week of the contract extension? Does our offense do any preparation or game planning? Hawk is ruining a special effort by our defense this year. Too bad we wont be in any meaningful games until Thanksgiving. Dont look now but that game will be the one that makes or breaks us to be bowl eligible-doesnt that figure?
Be glad they sold all the suites at Folsom because next week the stadium will be half full. This whole thing feels like the old days. If I hear one more *itch about rowdy fans and students booing the team I will puke. This team would have booed to Wyoming if this game would have been at home. I agree with the other posters that Hawk is now going to stubbornly stick with Cody just so that at some irrelevant time he can say "I told you so." And Judge Schmells says, I guess you did, I guess you did.... BTW-I called the Texas win on this site yesterday. Now watch LSU lose tonight and Texas will be #1.

It's easy to blame this on QB, but our o-line is decimated, making running the ball very difficult and the receivers are just not that good at getting open.

Buffman-all the teams we play are good. We probably wont be favored in another game this year (A/M at home gets the nod over the Buffs, me thinks) KSU has torched us recently and their QB is as good or better than Reesing. I do agree that we sure need a win. Even losing wont change Hawkins mind about our QB. Can we redshirt DS since he is obviously still hurt?

When you replace your QB in a rash move, and it does not work out, what do you do? Go back to your benched QB and hope he has any confidance left?????

when ryan miller got hurt, he barely made the cut off date or the amount of quarters played to get a medical redshirt, d scott has played more quarters than miller, so i would say scott is out of luck. should have red shirted him to begin with because he don't get no playing time anyways cuz hawkins likes to play the people with less talent more aka CODY CRAWFORD

Nolan,
The announcers were raving about the amount of time Reesing had in the pocket. Cody was scrambling for his life back there. We played a top 20 team on the road and kept it close until the fourth quarter. I don't accept losing or mediocrity either, but you can't simply pin this on Cody.
Posted by focobuff on October 11, 2008 at 3:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I have to agree with vegasbuff. I just think that it's purely ignorance on behalf of fans or alums to expect a consistent running or passing game right now. Yes I agree that Cody is not a Big 12 caliber quarterback, but in order to win, you must have an, at least, decent offensive line. The raw offensive line right now doesn't know its assignments and is just getting bullied by stronger upperclassmen on the other side of the ball. Do you ever wonder why D1AA teams consistently lose to D1 programs? Many times, these small programs have a few playmakers, (see Dexter Jackson from Appalachian State), but when they can't run the ball behind a weaker and less talented o line, they can't win, unless they have an absolute stud system quarterback. I don't think that Cody is a stud system quarterback. If anyone disagrees let me know.

MDBuff----did u see the replay of the safety? cody hawkins had a wide open wide receiver for a first down, didn't even look at him, and he did have enough time to react or even throw the ball away. if we keep making excuses then we will never be where we want to be.

Yes, I saw the replay of the safety and a better decision could have been made, but it wasn't. OK, so what if you bring in Ballenger then? He wasn't playing "lights out" either, even though the game was well in hand, and even the announcers said that Cody was more prepared than he was. I don't think Cody's All-American, but he's the best option we have right now.

Vegas-
What confidence do we have left to lose? You can see the body language. Check the FSU game when we had two key mistakes by Cody at the end of the half and put the game out of site. Same thing today. We have one turnover then we have the safety. We had a chance to go up 14-0 instead we are down 9-7. Can we just give this other kid a look? How about one series in the 2nd quarter? If we are admittedly not playing for the BCS what can it hurt? I dont see the logic of worrying about confidence. Who the he77 cares at this point?

The safety was the play that defined the game. Cody is supposed to be so smart, but QB's are taught never to run backwards into their own endzone. But it looked to me like Cody was trying to get into the endzone for the safety. He juked a defender who would have tackled him for a loss, but Cody seemed determined to give up 2 pts.
Heads up play!

MDBuff--------Cody was prepared for the game today? could have fooled me.
ballenger should have been put in, in the 2nd quarter for at least 1 posession to try and shake things up. cu is so predictable on offense.
with all of my negative thoughts, i do have to commend the defense on playing great again today. they kept us in the game, and when cody can't throw the ball further than 10 yards for a first down, the defense will obviously tire
people here in nebraska, yes i live in nebraska, but have always been a loyal buffs fan, think that cody is no doubt the worst qb in the big 12, and i hate to break it to you guys, most nu fans are knowledgeable when it comes to football

Almost every pass Cody throws is either underthrown or overthrown! When he signed with CU his father admitted that he doesn't have the strongest arm but claimed that he is very accurate...
(... and he never lost a game in midget football ... and that he could have been a major league pitcher ... and so on and so forth).
We all now know we were being sold a load of BS about "Johnny Gunslinger."

when players get hurt it obviously affects our team. but when you are a buffs fan, you don't say that it is ok because we have injuries. hawkins is getting paid a lot of money to put a winning product on the field and today he got outcoached. mangino is one fat bastard, but he is one hell of a coach. can we say the same for hawkins????? i like his enthusiasm and charm, but on the field?????? he hasn't proved anything. we improved so much from year 1 to year 2, and year 3 is looking horrible. the offense has gotten a lot worse than what it was last year. (fire the special teams coach)

If we block, and we did not
If we tackle, and we did not
If we do NOT turn the ball over, we did...
and I did NOT see passion in the players at the end, the offensive lineman were joking and laughing on the bench at the end of the game while the defense was on the field with 3 min. left. NOT a good sign. The senior leadership is lacking! This team needs a 3 day torture session, no more tough love, just tough coaching.
1s vs. 1s, run run run til they puke. Then run some more!
Like I said before, you want to KNOW you are going to win, NOT hope you are going to win every week. This team has lost its confidence.
My friends, Kansas was very, very beatable. They are slow as a team. I am watching Auburn right now, Tupperville (sp) fired his offensive coordinator this week, they are putting the QB under center, FB/TB I formation, away from the spread, two tight ends, and running the ball with some authority. They have realized that 2 losses with their great defense is worthy of a change. Some coaches make the moves and some don't recognize that they need to make a move.
Go Buffs!!!

Cody has no time to pass, which is the first problem. He has to run backwards then he throws the ball away. Our OL is inexperienced and hurt. We have no WR's. J fly was injured all game if any of you listened to the announcers. Our 2nd option is Scotty McKnight who is slow; our 3rd option is Patrick Williams who rubs Crisco on his hands before the game and cant catch.
Darian Hagan is who is responsible for subbing RB's, not Hawkins just like Cabral is for LB's. I don't see any of you complaining about how much Smart over runs every play which is the root cause of the long runs against us.
I am as frustrated with Cody Hawkins play as the next guy, but Ballenger hasn't impressed me in the least. Did anyone watch the horrible decisions he made in the 4th quarter? He took a 16 yard sack, similar to Hawkins. He threw a wobbling duck on a post pattern into triple coverage and got lucky it wasn't picked off.
Everyone who is calling for Coach Hawkins head area bunch of idiots. Not one of you could ever coach a pee wee league. Get over it. You guys didn't think he was bad the first 3 games of this year, or when we beat OU last year. You all are a bunch of fair whether fans who disgust me. I wish one of you would have the balls to tell this to the coaches and have a game plan ready, have a script of plays. Wait, all you want to do is play the Monday morning QB and hide behind your computer screen. Do you think they want to play Sumler over Scott? Heck no, it’s the fact he is banged up. Do you honestly think they want to play Crawford? Of course not, but they don't have any option because Barnett left us with nothing.
We obviously need improvements on a lot of levels. 70 percent of our 2 deep roster is freshman and sophomores. That is not a good sign.

if a quarterback can't make plays with his arm, then he needs to make plays with his legs, and cody can't do either. ballenger on the other hand can run and give us a little more mobility, not to mention the whole batted balls mess.

Nolan- I had your back all the way until that last post. We have 3 or maybe 4 winnable games still. As for running hell camp for the team that sounds like a great idea for a beat up, young team in the middle of the season with 4 o line men out with knee blow ups. Lets keep it reasonable. Every one is pisst that we have a crappy coach-end of story. The minority of people that still have no interest in seeing the next Elway are making it even worse. Can Cody's uncle (vegas) be banned from the site? I cant believe we talking about next year-we just got to this year. How many more next years are there?

ez1599-----------------we didn't have any receivers last year either, but our passing game was actually not bad last year. You can't judge Ballenger yet, you have to get him in the game early and see what he can do, he has entered two games with the game already over, not to mention this is the first 2 games he has ever played in. how can you defend hawkins???? yes the line is hurt, but hawkins still doesn't hit the open receivers and always underthrows them or overthrows them. that has nothing to do with the line.
leaders make plays when the game is on the line and they make passes when they are not supposed to.

Both QB's are slow. Look up their 40 times and Hawkins is a slightly faster than Ballenger. It looks like Ballenger is faster because he is bigger. Essentially, they are pretty much the same speed.

I think Ballenger is the long term answer. All i am saying is regardless if it is mop up duty or not, he hasn't impressed me much. He has made one good pass in which it was a terrific reception.
I guess my question to you is would you have been happy if Ballenger would have started last week against Texas? I would guess that Ballenger will start next week against K State. It's the easiest time and makes the most sense to bring in a back up QB. You never bench someone on the road nor when you are hosting a top 5 team. aka texas.

Wean him. Let him get a couple series in the first half and then trot him out there for the second half and adios Cody. You could put Cody in the slot and run some funky plays and KSU would have no way to prepare. Everyone gets to play and still gets a letter jacket. I ran this same smack 6 months ago and even had some support. What happened to DS? He was going to punt, fly a jet, cure cancer and now little brother cant even see the cheerleaders he is so deep on the bench. If he has been hurt all this time and we burned a year of his eligibility that is unforgivable. Nolan-thanks for the bio. I'm a virgo....

And all I am asking is everyone is real quick to call for a coaching change. Everytime you change coaches it sets the program back quite a bit. Obviously, not what we need at CU

Hey guys... I definitely agree that Cody aint the answer! But Im not sure Ballenger is either, he looked really crappy out there today!
But something has gotta change... I say give Ballenger a chance to start and see what happens.
As for the guys calling the plays, some of the decisions this coaching staff makes do seem strange. I know we're working with some damaged goods here, it just seems like we aren't always playing to win. Run calls up the middle on 3rd and short with Speedy (Use Scott for the gritty up the gut dives), receivers running 5 yard routes when its 3rd and 9, Using the check off receiver on 3rd & Long (this is usually Cody/receiver's fault), Never taking a chance offensively, various personnel choices, etc etc...
Im not trying to be negative or a bum-out fair weather fan, and I figured there would be ups and downs this year. I assumed the progress would come with growing pains, some steps backwards... but man, it kinda seems like this team has seized progress altogether. I think the 2007 Buffs would beat the 2008 Buffs!

ez-I like your posts. I like that you have a different view. Dude-our defense won the WVU game. Our offense was putrid for the whole game save three drives. the second half was unwatchable. cody threw a pick that was thrown directly at a WVU defenders belt buckle. Anyone remember that play? I knew then his days were numbered. As for a new coach-Bird has a contract. He can work-his flaw is his inability to make changes. Game planning is an organic process. You have to establish the run and control clock. Our offense is terrible-regardless of injuries, personnel, etc. If he has the sack to change QB's that will put me right back on his side. It's like saying sorry. He needs to get the team and the fans back in his corner. Admitting a mistake was made is the first step. He can still be the guy but the longer he resists the more detractors he will have. He can still make it a win-win, save the season, make a bowl and we can quit the next year talk for a few more months.

pg - You'e right, we don't have any great options at QB. But that problem began the minute Cody signed his letter of intent to come to CU: from that moment on, no other top QB's would even consider coming to CU because they won't risk their career against the coach's son.

To date, our only offense is still giving the ball to Stewart and letting him run wild. we can't do anything else

Posted by Buff_bronc_fan on October 11, 2008 at 5:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree with whoever said the 2007 version was a better team. I don't think there's any doubt that's the case on the offensive side of the ball.
I'm glad I'm not Mark Helfrich because I don't know where you go from here. The offensive play has been just abismal. The line can't block, we don't have any receivers capable of getting seperation aside from Josh Smith who is inconsistant, the QB play has been attrocious, and Ballenger didn't look like a guy we want to hand over the offense to next week... Nick Nelson anyone?
Speedy Stewart seems like the only guy we can hang our hats on right now... And he's more of a 10 carry type of back ideally. Something's gotta give on offense, because if they don't find some more consistancy, we might not win another game all year.

Give Ballenger a shot. Ease him in and lets see what he has. run a few series, let Cody play too. cody looks tight. He was better last year. The spotlight is on-we have more national games this year and higher expectations. Tough for a 20 yr old kid-tough for anyone. Let him run some slot, put him at in as a decoy. Make it a positive for everyone. We could really mess up another team's prep for us. Who cares at this point? Even if we win we get a scrub bowl that no one goes to (except me). cody gets eased out-but still has a role. Like a Kubiak with Elway or Applewhite to Simms. What I dont get is the massive resistance from the coach-how much worse can it get? As rhoward (my current favorite poster besides you and me) says-WTF?!?

He was a once-a-decade type recruit for a program like CU and he has been given NO chance to show what he can do, it's driving me insane! One carry! I may be wrong but I think that was the only play he even set foot on the field. Why didn't we just redshirt him if we weren't gonna play him? and why isn't josh smith on the field as WR more? I know he was dinged up today, but I'm talking about all year! We aren't playing our best players and our coaching absolutely sucks. I'm pretty fed up with this team.

Reading your posts during the recruiting season, I thought Scott would be the leading contender for the Heisman by now, even though he is only a freshman. It looks like Coach Hawkins wasted a scholarship with Scott. He should have used it to find a QB

ok hold on a second nolan, if our passing game was decent last year but our receivers were horrible last year, we have to give Cody credit and assume he's having a sophomore slump.
oh yeah, its Nick Nelson and Matt Ballenger, don't know who Matt Nelson is. Is he a husker?

it's nice to see some more realism and honesty around here. even the wvu win doesn't look so strong now. they got all they could handle from syracuse - probably the worst d1 school in the nation.
cody couldn't start for FIU or most D2 schools in the nation.
stewart looked good again and never got given a chance for rhythm. the o line stepped up a bit, but the play calling, offensive game planning, cody and the coaching on O are horrible.
how much longer. that's KU. someone the other day said, yeah this is mangino's 7th year give coach a break. but mangino has steadily improved the jayhawks and they have been decent for four years and good for the last three. he won the orange bowl last year. he's doing it with far less talent than coach hawk. but it is clear he knows what he wants to do and the kids get it.
watching this offense is harder than watching watson's and watson's was boring and predictable, but at least he had a plan and stuck with it.

i'm all over hawk because i do not see a game plan. i see an offense that doesn't have any kind of identity. i see an inept offense that starts through the coaches and struggles through his son's obvious deficiencies. and i was no fan of watson toward the end. he was so predictable.

I know I am not a big poster around here, but yes, there are MAJOR issues with this team. I was ok with our 6 wins last year because there was at least progress. We have regressed this year. I'm not even sure we will get 6 wins this year, and that would be totally unacceptable. Our defense has played OK, but the offense, special teams and coaching have been horrible.

7-5, 6-6, 12-1, 5-1. That's at KU. You are making my point for me. At KU where there is a lack of talent. Only two people wanted reesing - look how mangino has game planned to his strengths. you have no credibility flyer.

anyone who even tries to defend cody, helfrich or daddy (minus his recruiting, enthusiasm and community building) is just whacked. that's not steady improvement. they went from dweller to 500 to winning the north and the orange bowl to now staying one of the elite north teams?
that is spin. that is fact. and even though hawk came in here at the nadir of barnett's years, the buffs were not in the dweller when he came and the cupboard, though not full was not empty!
start telling us how well the O performed today. stewart and the much maligned O line stepped up. cody looks better feigning intensity from the sideline as he calls in plays.

My take on the game. Cody made up for his ineffiencies..ie arm strength, lack of mobility, with his decision making and confidence...the first several games. Today, he showed he is inneffective throwing, running and making decisions. He has lost his MoJo and has no confidence. He isn't a Big Twelve QB and looks like a deer in the headlights. After today, he probably rates 12 of 12. Bench him. Ballenger wasn't much better. We are in deep crap here. And where the heck was DScott... I saw him in one play. Hawk won't be getting any bonuses this year. And the corn looked dam good against TTech. They will probably kick our butt this year. One more year for Hawk to produce. Getting tired of the promises. Poor performance by CU today. The buck stops at the head coach. Game plan was bad, execution was bad, no tight end play when it counted. This will be a long year after such expectation. Recruiting has been hurt. C'mon Hawk...deliver on your promises! We want to believe.

do you think cody's velocity issues when he throws are due to the fact that he starts his windup so high, the ball is right above his right shoulder when he winds back. do you guys see what i see? it seems if he changed his throwing motion he could pick up some speed on his passes and maybe be able to throw it 30 yards down field

C'mon guys...you fed us daily hype about this guy all preseason, and nothing on why he isn't getting the ball more. I thought it must be injuries...but that seems not to be the case. Talk to Scott! Talk to the Coach! Talk to his parents...do some digging. That's your job. This is one of the highest ranked recruits in CU history, what the hell is going on? Do your job DC!

dscott = marcus houston. let's hope it turns out better, but history does have this way of repeating itself. ruffemup - come on back a bit here, so we can have some balance.
i was sold to have higher expectations and i do. we all should. hawk himself should. that's the talk he talks. he just ain't walking the walk. one of the reasons barnett lost favor so quickly was because in the last couple of years he was doling out blame everywhere and never looking at himself in the mirror.
if cody were a true leader, he would step up and say he knows it's on his shoulders. he won't blame the o-line. if his daddy is a leader he will take responsibility and go back to work. i'm tired of excuses from the staff, administration and pseudo-fans alike.

Mangino is going to have a heart attack before too long. He makes Weiss of ND look svelt!
Ballenger did not look bad all things considered. He was 5 of 8 and moved pretty good considering the rush.
The loss was not Cody's fault but he should be the back upas his arm is just too weak. Scott must be hurting to play so little. I think Moyd should get some reps that Sumler is getting.
The good news is that all the young OL guys are getting much experience and next year we will have great depth at that position as well as at running back and linebacker.
But Cody simply will not take us to the next level.

You guys need get some rest and come back with a fresh outlook tomorrow. It's just a knee jerk reaction right now. The truth is we're 3 and 3, and lost on the road to a top 20 team that we hung with till the fourth quarter. No need to throw Ballenger to the wolves and say, "ok magic man, lead us to the promised land." It's not going to happen. Cody's still our best shot to win and in Hawk we trust.

If you were Scott you would certainly have told Hawk that you don't like this "spread" offense that's designed to protect Cody from looking too bad.
Scott undoubtedly would prefer a more conventional "I" formation which would allow him to excel. They must be bumping heads. It's not too unrealistic to think that Scott is being punished for not worshiping Cody - just like Hugh Charles was.

Well, it seems to run against the grain here...but I still think Hawk is the man for the job. I DO think he may have a bit of a problem seeing the truth about his son though.
Just another good reason not to be coaching your son I would think (because even if he DOES deserve the starting job, the nepotism will raise skepticism among the fans every time... unless the QB is perfect of course).
I just want to know why we aren't seeing people like Scott. There may be very good reasons, but we sure haven't heard them. If we were winning, I suppose this isn't a big deal. Obviously that's not the case.
Hawk will get this team deeper over time. Those calling for his firing aren't likely to give anyone enough time to turn things around (as everyone has no doubt heard a million times, Coach Mac seemed to take forever. I remember it well...).
But, don't leave us in the dark Daily Camera! Maybe if fans knew better what was going on we wouldn't speculate so wildly!

We are working on jet propulsion right now. All the good players here are on every roster in the US. I believe 7 QB starters in the Big 12 are from Texas high schools. Have to recruit Texas to get kids. Hawk's crop duster only flies west. Hagan has Calif but we need Khanavis McGee on the staff to recruit Texas. There are 3 D1 prospects in the school district I am in-Cy Creek, Cy Woods, cy Falls all have guys that can play. Did you see the Michigan highlights-Sam McGuffie from Cypress Fairbanks High starts as a freshman at Michigan and they suck but he can play. I cant believe the DS situation. If I was his dad I would have him out of Boulder tonight. What BS did they feed this kid? It's a shame.
Posted by ybul on October 11, 2008 at 8:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Hagan needs to quit switching backs. A big back like sumler or scott needs to get in a groove and pound it out. Stewart appeared able to handle the lions share against WV, why not stick with what is working? It seemed to me we could move the ball when running, however, that seemed to go by the wayside. Play smash mouth ball from the I and get r done.
Cody does appear to be shell shot and possibly needs switched out.

fishhead: I'm no where near ready to compare d scott to marcus houston. houston at least got carries and had an opportunity to prove himself during his freshman year. scott has had no such opportunity. I think he has looked good when he has been given the ball, he just NEVER gets the ball. do you guys actually have any info about scott not getting along with cody? or is that just made up?
and no MDbuff, this is not a knee jerk reaction for me, we have looked awful all season (maybe except against CSU which is a horrible team) and would of won at least 2 more games if it wasn't for horrible coaching and QB play

Y-I can see what they are TRYING to do. They want to keep the D off balance and keep the guys fresh. The problem is the game plan and play calling are so terrible that there is no-I will say this slowly-RHYTHM. We have nothing. That is the reason why Cody looks so bad. No consistency, no plan and no wins. That is COACHING. I dont give a shi% about who is hurt, who brought the snacks or who has man crush. Our offense wants to be what it cant and our coaches are so stubborn they cannot recognize it. These are simpletons that came in from an a## backward place, made a splash and realized they are over their heads. The OU win looks like a long time ago...We are gonna wish all our remaining games were on the road and not on TV. Watch Briles at Baylor over the next few years as he has hundreds of Texas high school coaches in his network and they all hate UT and A&M because they dont play underclassman.

Cody was bad. Ballenger was just as bad. O-line was the main problem. That isn't to say that Ballenger doesn't have more upside at this point...
Williams dropped so many balls I was going nuts. Crawford isn't bad and that first pick off his back was a fluke. He isn't fast but he has good hands and runs decent routes.
J Fly looked much better on returns, but needs to bulk up and toughen up a bit.
D looked good most of the time but there are still a bunch of missed tackles that if made would put this D among the most dominant around.
Some of you seem to think coaching is easy and that you can flip a switch and turn a program around. Am I happy with the current state of the Buffs? No way. But that doesn't mean that coaches should be fired left and right.
Oh, and Wally Pip lost his starting gig to Lou Gehrig not Roger Maris. But I guess I shouldn't expect you to know about baseball either.

I totally agree with the Patrick Williams comments. I know he's just a kid and all..but sheesh. "Underachiever" doesn't do him justice. He's like the second coming of Rico ("Hands of Stone") Smith...without the speed. Why is he in there so much? What is he bringing to the table? He even runs out of bounds rather than get hit when he does manage to catch the ball. He needs a good talking to...at least.

Roger Maris was the first to break Babe Ruth's home run record. In 1961. Lou Gehrig took over for Wally Pip in 1925 to start his streak as the iron man and become an all-time Yankee/baseball great. Roger Maris wasn't even born yet, maybe not even his parents, when that happened.

ep has been taking it out on an old shed, since the end of the game, that needs to be torn down behind his daughter's house.
Tried my best to throw my antique back out...got lucky I guess.
took me a while to sift thru the hysteria in here too.
Just read the Hawkins "post mortem" on Scout too. He is definitely in a bad mood. He needs to be. I'm with Don on this one. The whole team needs to be reamed, read the riot act and run to death in practice all next week.
It is also time for Ballenger to start. He needs the reps. Cody has had three strikes now. Unfortunately Dan said he is still going to start. Hopefully he is only trying to lull Prince to sleep.
On the bright side, no one really expected to win this game anyway. Looks like OKstate is out of our league now as well. that means we will have to win next week and somehow beat AM, NE, IA too. If we do we wont be far off most everyone's preseason predictions for a won/loss record anyway.
If there is not any improvement and we dont win next week I may go bowhunting for the rest of the season.

Josh was injured (at least that is what the announcers said). BTW, was anyone else annoyed at the idiot announcers? They had no idea what they were talking about most of the time! When Ballenger was already running on the field one announcer made a comment on the impact of the change, so the other announcer asked him his thoughts on the situation and he says "well with no helmet on I'd say Cody is not coming on the field"... When Ballenger is already out there ready to take a snap!
And don't get me started on the replays and other game updates during the game action! The female in-game announcer, to her credit, was trying to get the update in fast and the play-by-play crew were asking her questions. I guess the ESPN big-wigs didn't think they should bother putting any of their top guys on to cover this game either.
