Woelk: Investing long term with Buffs still not bad idea
Somehow, I expected to see the Dal Ward Center in full panic mode Tuesday afternoon.

Coaches scurrying back and forth, players with frantic looks on their faces, a general buzz of alarm -- kind of like Wall Street over the last 10 days or so. Full-blown hysteria.
But there was neither panic nor manic surrounding Colorado football on Tuesday.
Dan Hawkins met with the media for his weekly press conference, answered all questions, chatted with reporters, refused to anoint this week's game against Kansas State as a make-or-break point of the season, and then went about his business.
In fact, that actually might be the best way to describe the mood around the Buffs: business as usual.
"Our mission has been every week to try to get better, to try to improve," Hawkins said.
Nothing has changed. While the sky may be falling on Internet chat rooms and message boards, nobody in Dal Ward is ducking for cover.
Issues? Of course there are issues. Show me a team in the nation that doesn't have some problems to address, and I'll show you an unbeaten team.
But if you're trying to decide whether to buy or sell these Buffs (just to carry that Wall Street analogy a little farther), you first have to decide how long you plan on investing.
If you're in it for just the rest of the season -- and you bought in after the Buffs started 3-0 -- that's an admittedly dicey proposition.
For a number of reasons, CU hasn't progressed like most had hoped thus far. The offense is struggling, the defense has had its moments (good and bad) and CU's special teams have been aroller-coaster ride, leaving fans breathless on one occasion and with that sinking feeling in the pit of their stomach the next.
That being said, Colorado is still 3-3 with six to go. That's plenty of time to build a little momentum, cure some problems and take some steam into the home stretch.
In some ways, the Buffs are at square one: half the season gone and nothing decided. There's a profit to be made, but it won't be easy.
But if you're looking at a long-term investment, you might want to weather this storm -- just like they have in Missouri, Kansas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
The improvements at Kansas and Missouri have been well-chronicled. Those programs stuck with their coaches (Gary Pinkel at Mizzou and Mark Mangino at Kansas) through some lean years and they're reaping the benefits today.
Ditto with Texas Tech, where Mike Leach is in his ninth year and has his team ranked in top 10.
And did we mention Oklahoma State? When Les Miles headed off to LSU four years ago, OSU promoted Mike Gundy and stuck with him. Gundy went 4-7 in his first year (1-7 in the Big 12) and entered this year with an 18-19 overall record and an 8-16 mark in the Big 12.
But in his fourth year, Gundy owns a win over No. 3 Mizzou, an unbeaten record and a No. 8 ranking in the nation.
Lesson to be learned? Successful programs in the Big 12 all have one thing in common: continuity. Mack Brown is in his 11th year at Texas. Bob Stoops has been on the OU campus for 10. Then there's Texas Tech's Leach (9), Mizzou's Pinkel (8), KU's Mangino (7) and OSU's Gundy (4).
It takes time, it takes patience and it takes a little luck.
This corner has always been a believer in the "four-year barometer." After four years -- with any coach in any program in any sport -- ask yourself these questions:
Has that coach consistently recruited well?
Have those players improved after their arrival?
Is the team more competitive against upper-echelon teams?
And, naturally, has the record improved?
If you can answer yes to those questions, then your investment is a sound one.
Of course investors in the Buffs -- and it's the same in every corner of the college football world -- have little patience. They're demanding big profits, right now.
Not going to happen. Nobody with an objective outlook actually thought it would, not in Dan Hawkins' third year.
Short-term forecast? We think there's still some bump left in these Buffs, and this weekend's Kansas State game is the perfect time for a little bounce.
Overall, though, it will be a roller-coaster ride to the closing bell.
Meanwhile, if you don't have the patience for the long term, the Big 12 probably isn't the best place to be an investor.

Good points Neill. However, even in year four its looking dicey. We'll probably be 3-3 then as well, after beating Miami of Ohio, the Rams and Wyoming, we'll play WVU in Morgantown, go to Austin to play UT and then host Kansas.
We'd all be happy with 4-2 and downright delirious with 5-1 at that point. The season finishes out the same as this year's schedule so we may be fighting again for a bowl birth.
So, honestly, given where the team is now and the lack of receiving and d-back depth, we'd better review this investment uner your criteria at this time in 2010, when we will be 6-0 at this point in the season.

I think the coaches are in panic mode.
1 second after the KU game the Head coach blurted out "there will be no QB change"..
In a press meeting the Coach is calling out reporters for saying things he doesn't like.
Another loss and he'll go into seclusion and quit talking.

If CU wins this weekend, nepa, will you please go into seclusion and quit talking?

BTW, nepa, I'll be at Folsom on Saturday. Seeing as how we're both such big CU fans, I'd love to buy you a beer after the game. Let me know when and where to meet you and I'll be there. I'm sure it'll be very, very easy to pick you out of the crowd.

I wonder if short selling allowed with regard to this particular investment?

yo, daddy, you did that long ago.
Meanwhile, here's an interesting question. Players at Ohio State appear to be openly advocating for their pick to start at qb: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008...
Has anybody heard any word from CU players? Has anybody even asked?
In all seriousness I wonder what the guys on the team think?
It would be nice to get some informed info - not the distorted opinions of nepa or daddy or the easy quotes fed us by the DC sports staff.

Rodrigo - For once we agree. I would also like to hear the players comments especially a guys like Geer or Walters, seniors, who were both outstanding QB's. But what can they say: if their comments are even slightly negative they will find themselves in the same position as Hugh Charles last year.
Hence, all we hear is silence, on something that every member of the team must have an opinion on.
Hawk has probably gone around and offerd a little more playing time to any player who will say something nice about Cody: but no takers!

Come on Rod, no player is going to say anything.
This has become the worst case scenario.

No
And, naturally, has the record improved?

4 and 4 in the big 12 last year
4 and 4 this year would mean no improvement
5 and 3 minimum needed this year to make the Hawk mantra happen.

Posted by rodrigo on October 15, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Why wouldn't players say, or do, something? Even it means Hawk's doghouse or the end of their careers at CU, wouldn't that be in their best interest if they really felt Cody was only starting because Dan's his dad? If you were Ballenger or Hansen (or Scott or any of the o-linemen or any of the younger guys on the team, for that matter) would you stay at CU if you felt the coaches weren't doing the right thing?
I have no idea what those guys think. But it would be nice to know.

vk - i think neil sets himself up, and it's interesting that he points out gundy but then alludes to him as being part of the continuity. the comparison works, but all the way.
start with gundy - he is in his 4th year and his team is 8th in the nation and undefeated. that's OSU, the bed wetting little brother in oklahoma - a place that had nothing when he arrived - nothing.
mack brown - say whatever you want perennial winner, high expectations, win, win win. how many 10 win seasons? how long had UT been down? how long did it take?
stoops - how long did his turnaround take? how many bcs bowls. yes, continuity - earned continuity and very clear change in direction.
pinkel and mangino - a little longer, but neither mu nor ku has ever been much of football team. and though they both suffered through a few mediocre seasons on the upswing, it was clear that there was progress.
again - i go back to the questions and i agree with vk. i also think gundy is important to look at. year 4.
so is neil saying that if we do not have real progress toward the end of this year and into next, then we should reconsider our investment?
isn't that really what many of us have already been saying.

Neil, you say:
"It takes time, it takes patience and it takes a little luck."
IT TAKES A QUARTERBACK!!
Look at every single one of those programs you listed and tell me what they have in common. Great QBs! Its no secret. Even in the NFL. Sure there are a few exceptions but generally, QBs make or break teams. The best years CU had were under Hagan and Kordell its not a coincidence.

If you doubt what I said a few days ago about the influence this forum has on the Buffs themselves, please re-read the article. Congratulations to Nepa and Who's for your successful anti buffalo propaganda campaign. You disguise it under the "nepotism" theme but that's just a convenient excuse. It would be something else if Cody wasn't the starter. Given the amount of time you spend here spouting your nonsense, I suspect you may be paid by some husker booster to do it.
Thank the Camera for letting it happen.

As it stands, the changing of Barnett to Hawkins has resulted in less games won and a 4 MILLION dollar severance to Barnett.

Anybody remember Elway's rookie season - before the Broncos had become really good? He was electrifying. He was young and yet could make things happen. He was just a great athlete.
No way I'm comparing any CU QB to Elway - but the point is - if you have a great athlete under center they can make things happen - even if the team isn't that great. In fact - a really good QB can elevate the level of play of an average, or below average team.

Since we're using an investment scenario, I would have put my money in Butch Davis, Tim Brewster or Jim Grobe for the optimal return on my coaching investment. Brewster has taken an awful Minnesota program and improved it dramatically, so has Davis at UNC and Grobe continues to improve Wake Forest. All were candidates, apparently, for the CU job. Just kidding/stirring the pot there a bit guys (as if it needs it). I firmly believe Hawk is the guy.
In a year or two we'll all be singing his praises full throttle. Too many injuries, tough schedule and inexperience this year to progress much. Those are realities, not excuses. You CAN compensate for those things and still do well if you have depth, but we're young and thin almost everywhere and Hawk needs a couple more recruiting cycles for that to show. Hawk is the right guy. Go Buffs!

Two major issues as I see it.
1. Buffs have not had an above average QB, or lately an average QB, for 15 years. Ochs could have been but we know what happenned there.
2. No passing to RBs or TEs. They try and go downfield to much and that is not a strength. Need to start trying some toss sweeps as well.

joseph.l.coleman: I too have wondered why we haven't been able to recruit a top QB pretty much since the days of Kordell Stewart and Darian Hagan. We really haven't had a premiere QB in ages. I think one of the surprises, and disappointments, of Slick Rick's reign was the fact that he didn't rope in any big-time QBs. He was allegedly going to parlay his experience working with Troy Aikan into luring some blue chip QBs. That never happened. And, Colt Brennan pretty much got himself excused from CU (although, of course, the reactionery administration helped ensure that too). I do agree, though, that we haven't really had a big time recruit at QB for some time.

buffalo_flyer, Mizzou fans were calling for Pinkle's head week after week. It stopped when Chase Daniel started to make a name for the school's football program. I lived in St. Louis so I know how things were when Pinkle was a joke.
Right now, Chase is doing the recruiting for Mizzou, not Pinkle. So yes, qb play is HUGE. We will get that one 'special' player just as Mizzou and KU did. He may be on the roster now.
Oh, and once Chase and Maclin enter the draft, Mizzou will fall off real quick. Same with KU, once Reesing leaves, they are done.
Have some faith and quit busting Hawkin's balls every week. Our time is coming. Go Buffs!

I mentioned yesterday that I think CU is a very attractive landing spot for a top QB who is serious about making a name for himself. We have a great O-line in the making. We have a pretty deep quality RB corp and we are missing a star QB to lead the team to glory in the best QB conference in the country.
We play top teams every year. We are on TV (national included) several times every year. All in all I think CU should be very attractive to a gifted and talented QB. Now all we have to do is get that message out there...
Posted by WhosYourDaddy on October 15, 2008 at 10:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)
BT - I love your idea, but any top QB is going to have second thoughts about CU after having watched what has gone on at CU under Hawk, i.e. White being pushed out, Nelson being duped, Ballenger riding the bench while Cody sprints into the opponent's endzone, etc.
It just doesn't look like other QB's get a fair shake under Hawk and that's going to make them shy away.
Posted by WhosYourDaddy on October 15, 2008 at 10:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
And BTW, in case you didn't know, Hawk's other son, Drew, will be a redshirt freshman QB at Boise State next year (just a coincidence I'm sure).
He will be transfering to CU to take over the QB job when Cody's done. So those top QB prospects may not want to get too excited just yet.
Posted by BuffTime on October 15, 2008 at 10:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Whos, that's just nonsense. Do you stay awake at night dreaming up silly conspiracy stories about Hawk? White left because he couldn't deal with competition. If he had any sense he would have stayed and been the starter by week 3 at the latest.
Nelson wasn't "duped". He came in trying to win the no.1 job. He didn't make the cut and is now no.3. Ballenger is a redshirt frosh and is getting playing time at QB. How many red shirt freshman starters are there at BCS conference schools?
If Drew wanted to come to CU he could have. He decided he preferred Boise. Probably didn't feel like being second guessed for 4 yrs. My guess is that some part of Cody is regretting choosing CU over Boise for exactly that reason. He can't win.
As for your previous suggestions that Hugh Charles had his playing time limited because he questioned Cody as the starter, that too is just a bunch of non-sense. He got in Hagan's dog house for not running through people and playing. He even admitted himself that he is maybe too nice a guy to play angry and run over people. He was a sprinter trying to be a running back. You just have to look at Speedy to see how Hugh could have turned out. Speedy plays angry and he runs over people.
CU recruits smart kids. A smart kid will look at the situation, realize that fools on a forum don't know squat about what really goes on and ignore them (if they even have the slightest clue we exist in the first place).
CU needs to go after the big time QB prospects and bring one in just like they brought in DS last go around.
Posted by WhosYourDaddy on October 15, 2008 at 11 p.m. (Suggest removal)
BT - We couldn't agree more that CU needs a big time QB prospect, but as long as Coach Dad is playing favorites they will be going elsewhere.
I said long ago, above and beyond all of Cody's physical deficiencies the worst thing about the nepotism was that it would be a certainty that top QB recruits would avoid CU.
Watching what has happened with Cody, and not knowing what will happen with Drew, will be plenty for most recruits to find another school.
Posted by BuffTime on October 15, 2008 at 11:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Oh you got him now. It was all supposed to be a secret. Drew goes to Boise State to play there for a couple of years, then when Cody has used up his eligibility at CU Drew transfers, sits out a year and then plays one glorious year at CU!
Give me a break.
I guess Hawk is paying out most of his salary to his assistants to all stay and destroy their careers so that his kids can play QB. We have had one assistant leave in the past 2 years. If the coaches thought they were being railroaded into playing the coaches kid unfairly over better talent that would make them all look better, do you seriously think they wouldn't have left long ago?
If Ballenger or Hansen thought they were being screwed, don't you think they would have transferred by now? At least Ballenger who was here last year and would have seen Cody compared to Nelson? I guess they are in on the conspiracy too.. They must be... (start X-Files theme song now)

Some of you guys crack me up, especially the chicken little pseudo-fans that think the sky is falling. "Oh dear, we lost to three top 25 teams, we'll never win again!" "Oh no, our QB is too short, even though he's taller than Todd Reesing, to throw a TD pass and he'll never have another good game in his life." "Oh my, a good QB recruit will never come here again, except for the two '09 QB recruits who are tearing up California football." "Oh crap, our true freshmen RBs aren't ready to step in & dominate the best conference in college football, though I'm not talking about you, true freshman Rodney Stewart."
Oops, didn't I mimic you quite right? Did I throw in some reality there? Excuuuuuse me! You fake Buffalo fans, go get a life! You supposed loyal fans who never met a bandwagon you didn't like, man up! It's a long season that's not for the meek and the weak. This is the BIG 12, baby, so fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride. It gets pretty bumpy, especially when you're team is young, but out of struggle comes success. Will you be there when it happens, or will you be running after Ralphie's trailer when it starts to speed up!

flabuff227, I graduated from CU in 1992 and saw what a real team looks like. I'm tired of us keep bringing in these coaches that shouldn't be coaching in the big 12 and giving them the extensions without any results. What's wrong with hiring an assitant coach from a real program like what LSU and Oklohoma did. They didn't go to wac to get a new coach. They hired assitants from a real program. That's what we needed to do. I was on the Hawk band wagon last year but I feel we've taken a step back in every phase of the game this year and we gave him an extension.
I'm tired of coaches that accept Mediocrty. Barnett was the same. Well I won the big 12 north so I keep my job and its ok to get spanked in title game. Next time you drive 16 hours to go to the big 12 title game whether in Houston or Kansas just to see us get spanked you can tell me what I'm feeling is suspect.

Les Miles was head coach at Oklahoma State before LSU. Yes he was an assistant before that, but so was every head coach at one time or another.
Barnett was head coach at Northwestern and was considered a catch when he was lured back to CU after the Neuheisel saga. Top head coaches don't often leave one top program to rebuild another. So if you need to rebuild you go after coaches who aren't currently coaching, top assistants, or coaches who have a good track record of success at lower tier schools.
Hawkins had a stellar record coming into CU. His current record reflects a coach who has had to completely rebuild a program that was dysfunctional, had fallen behind recruiting-wise, and had a severe image problem, lack of fan support, and not the best budget in the world.
Given what he walked into and agreed to take on, I give him some slack. He has turned most of that list around pretty impressively. He also tackled the more important ones first. I am proud of the program and will be patient for the wins to start coming in spades. If he had ignored all of the other issues and went straight for wins at all cost, I would have a lot less respect for the man.

Florida went to the MWC to get a coach. What conference did Tressel come from?
Maybe we should go after an ex pro like Callahan or Wannestadt?
Gosh it is just so easy and simple to find a successful coach. Can someone tell me why 90 percent havent won an NC?

Neill is right, the team is and will get better because both Mike and Hawk have the drive and the talent. The only question is: will you fans (arch) and alums (Rodrigo) pay and/or contribute enough money to allow them to produce, in a tough conference, winning teams. To compete means money ie. Kansas opens a 40 million dollar facility and at CU Sat.night, 2,500 seats were unsold in a small stadium. CU doesn't have the money so it has to come from fans and alums. In contributions we are 10th out of 12 and there 60,000 CU alums in the Denver Metro area. Hey, the problem isn't Cody, the problem is you get what you pay for and you are paying for a middle of the pack team. So that is what you get.
