QB switch not a quick fix
CU's Hawkins shares philosophy for considering changes
Plenty of Colorado football fans have convinced themselves the woes of their offense are a one-man issue. Borrowing a few campaign posters from Sen. Barack Obama and taping backup quarterback Matt Ballenger's name just above the phrase "Change we need" would suit them perfectly.

Others have convinced themselves a switch at the position is inevitable this season and might be better suited to using Ballenger's name with Sen. John McCain's slogan "Change is coming."
Dan Hawkins and his assistant coaches appear to disagree on both counts. Hawkins offered some valuable insight into his philosophy behind making a quarterback change during his weekly media luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the Dal Ward Center.
"It's always a tenuous situation," Hawkins said. "Confidence and continuity is such a huge, huge thing. If you truly are in a position where you're going to give a guy the hook, I think you better be prepared to say, 'OK, we're going to go with a change and we're good making that change.' Because it's very hard to get them back up. It really is."
Hawkins has been critical of his son's play as the Buffs' starting quarterback in recent weeks, but he definitely doesn't believe the Buffs' offensive problems would all be solved by changing quarterbacks.
CU is in the midst of the three-game losing streak in which the Buffs have averaged 16.3 points a game. Much of those struggles can be traced to upheaval in the offensive line with two season-ending injuries calling even less experienced players into service and those players having to get up to speed against very good defenses.
Cody Hawkins' struggles have come against three of the nation's top-30 defenses. He has made some crucial blunders and has completed only42 percent of 91 passing attempts with three interceptions. But the running game also has faltered, making the Buffs more one-dimensional than they were in the first three games this season.
Coaches have replaced Hawkins in the lineup late in the two most recent losses, to Texas and Kansas, with Ballenger, who hasn't appeared to be confident in either instance but has done well in the time he has been given.
Ballenger has completed eight of 12 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, albeit against defenses that were not blitzing and playing coverages designed to keep the ball in front of them and not give up big plays.
Coach Hawkins said making a change at quarterback is a delicate matter that has to be handled right and done for the right reasons.
"I think you have to be fair with them. I think you have to be honest with them," he said. "I think there has to be real tangible reasons as you look at the entire package and kind of go, 'We have to do this.'
"I think if you're a little trigger happy ... if you resort to emotion, that you sometimes have an issue where it may not be all that guy's fault. You just kind of feel like emotionally that's what you should do even though there is not a lot of tangible evidence there that says, 'Yeah this is all on you' "
While Hawkins is hesitant to further complicate the issue and doesn't want to lay the blame for the team's struggles all at the feet of his starter, there is a school of thought that says a change can lead to good things, even for the quarterback being replaced.
Joel Klatt understands both sides of it and has lived through tough times at the position. The former CU star will work his first college game this weekend as a member of the Fox Sports Net play-by-play team calling the Buffs' game against Kansas State.
Klatt holds most of Colorado's most significant passing records after serving as the team's starting quarterback during the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons. But there were tough times for Klatt, too.
The Buffs went through a similarly haggard stretch offensively in the first half of the 2004 season and former coach Gary Barnett chose to replace Klatt in the starting lineup with James Cox just before a meeting with Iowa State.
"I remember that week vividly, and it was a real perspective adjuster for me in terms of I was making football too important in my own life," Klatt said Tuesday at the Dal Ward Center. "I started to realize that.
"What it did is, it kind of re-energized my mind-frame when I would step in the building. It wasn't just about completing more passes or being more productive on the field, but rather kind of a whole change in terms of attitude, lifting, meetings. It was, for me, a time where for the first time I could focus on doing whatever I could do to help the team."
Cox started against the Cyclones, but threw an interception late in the first half and Barnett gave him the hook, turning back to Klatt.
"I can remember just being so much more appreciative of where I was at and the fact that I got to be in the huddle again and the fact that I got to run the offense again," Klatt said. "I just tried to do things within the offense. My perspective at that point was I didn't have to do anything, but, rather, the system would work for itself."

Well Dizon, I'll break that thread right here. Anybody who doesn't think coaches play the best players they have (in their judgment) must work for the post office.
Because in the real world, you get paid to produce. And if you fall short often enough, you get a one way ticket to palookaville.
If Cody's playing, its because right now, he's the best. Grown men are betting their careers on it.

Sometimes these grown men who are betting their careers on it need a swift kick in the a** to get the blood flowing from the heart to the brain.

Hopefully we are not being buffaloed by the head football buffalo.

I keep coming back to the same question -
If I had a million dollar contract, and my entire career, hanging on the production of my team/unit/division/company - would I keep my son at the helm if there was someone better to do the job? I can't see that happening.
Same for Helfrich. If you are the guy who is going to have to fall on the sword for a losing season, would you be able to speak truth to power? I'm guessing yes.
Bottom line. We only know so much peeking in over the fence. I have to believe that Cody remains the best man for the quarterback job, at least for the remainder of this year.
The last three teams the Buffs have faced have had rushing defenses ranked in the top 15 in the nation. KSU is ranked 96th (and the pass defense is ranked 105th). Let's see how the Buffs' patchwork offensive line does against a mediocre defense before we bail on 2008.
Go Buffs!

dizonrocks - not to disagree completely, but i think kyle is being immensely disingenuous with this whole article. i don't think anyone is saying it's all about cody. i think many people understand the o line is down (but this should not be an excuse) and that the performance of the o over the past 5 games has been been horrible - the scheming, planning, execution. cody certainly is part of the problem.
kyle - i don't think there is a true fan on here who believes changing the qb will be an elixir for this team.

Ok Dizonrocks, whose fault is it that the Offense is so bad?
Is it the players? Just some of the Players?
Or the coaches in charge of selecting the depth chart and game preparation?
Or is it no ones fault, everyone else in the big 12 just has better players and better coaches and the Buffs just can't compete in the Big 12?
Or does it honestly take 4 to 5 years to prepare a kid to play? Don't they already know how to tackle and block when they get here? (as if no other team plays freshmen and sophmores)
What is it Dizon???? Please tell us.
Inquiring minds want to know.

Id prefer a change in OC - Helfrich's problems trickle down more than Cody's migrate up.

To Nepa's question about already knowing how to block and tackle, I would respond with another question. How many pro teams start 75% rookies on their offensive line? Don't they already know how to block and tackle? After all, they were the best college players at their position and have been playing football for 10 or more years.
The answer is that it takes time to learn at the next level because the guy on the other side of the line is better at the next level.
There is a difference between an inquiring mind and a closed mind.

There you have it: "continuity and confidence." Read between the lines, that means there won't be any challenges for the QB spot. The CU QB job belonged to Cody while he was still in high school and there won't be any changes as long as Dan Hawkins is the coach.

Old, I thought you knew, Pro's can play for 10 to 15 years. (where College is only 4 years)...
Anyways, that would be my guess why Pro teams don't start 75% rookies.
But then again, neither does CU. That's a slightly skewered analysis, a redshirt freshmen is actually a sohpmore, are they not?

nepa, read the post. He didn't say that they played college ball for 10 years, just that by the time they got to college they had probably been playing for 10 years. Also, redshirt frosh/sophmore, they are still essentially rookies put in a starting position.
Of course they know the fundamentals, but being a starter, and being under live fire on the field so to speak, is vastly different than just practice. It doesn't even have to be rookies that we are talking about. The Broncos line has been okay to start the season, but their running game won't be really starting to click until this unit (what is it, something like all five positions are a different starter from last year) has been on the field enough time to work out how to play together.
McCbuff, this could actually be great for recruiting. If the position coaches can make this unit a solid positive for the offense before the end of the season, that will say mountains to any recruit looking for a coaching staff that can teach the position, especially with "rookies" under fire.

Why does calling for a change at QB instantly make one a Buff hater? I've been to plenty of scrimmages the last couple years and based on performance, I would have started Cody, too (it has nothing to do with the fact that his dad is the head coach). He was a serviceable QB last year, when we really didn't have any other options. He didn't make many mistakes and he didn't put the team in many bad situations.
This year has been a different story. Cody has not played well all season. He has made bad plays and missed big plays in each game. Of course it's not all his fault (for example, the first pic on Saturday was a good throw that the other Cody just handed to the Kansas DB), but a change at QB to someone with a stronger arm and a little more mobility could be just the thing the energize this offense. Of course the running game is suffering! Why would anyone respect our passing game? We only have one tangible downfield threat and a QB that hasn't shown the ability to throw the ball deep.
The QB always gets the most scrutiny because he touches the ball the most often and has the most opportunities to make something happen. Our QB just isn't making enough good things happen. Calling for a change doesn't make one a Buff hater or a Cody hater.

vk - it sucks knowing that my four season tickets haven't been worth face value for over a decade, that my neighbor and his boys go down to the game pay 5 bucks a seat for great seats and walk in at kick off.
no, it's not a sell out. let's hear about all the other options this weekend - are loveland and a-basin open?
fact is that folks like buff4life would be better served trying to figure out how they could drum up more support for our average squad. at least corn fans support their team even when they bash the product.
here, even when the product is good and getting full support in the media and fans (granted that's not been often in the last 20 years), it's still hard to sell out 58,000 in arguably the most beautiful place to see a game in the world (i've been around it and to some damn cool stadiums).
kyle is plain phishing himself. no one is knee jerking about cody - simply stating a profound sense of the obvious. let's talk about team identity? offensive identity? game planning? scheming? talent development?
if we cannot move the ball against KSU, we are in for a very long day.

I don't think changing the QB would make a difference.
This offense has deteriorated in all aspects. Can't run, can't pass, can't protect. Can't even execute well enough to get a TE pass going, have to use him as a OT for blocking.
The Offense looks confused, is inconsistant and makes a ton of mistakes.
This is not the WAC, in the Big 12 teams get after you and you have to execute consistantly.
This is not a QB problem as much as a coaching problem.

do you believe the o has shown continuity and progress?
do you think cody has performed well enough to not have his performance question?
has the team shown enough progress this year?
all of those questions are legitimate. i hope that this weekend whatever schemes and game planning helfrich, hawk and the o geniuses come up with - work the clock a bit, get stewart the ball, establish a bit of a run and put cody in positions to succeed. i don't think we have a chance if the ksu offense spends more time on the field than ours.
how about telling o line: we need you to step up and punch the wildcats in the mouth a few times. try it. i bet those guys want to step up - know they have something to prove. i think stewart has proven that he can move the chains.

What about the intangibles? We haven't really heard anything about Ballenger, other than his physical prowess. Cody, like Klatt, was a leader on and off the field. I hate losing as much as anybody, but we've had a lot of injuries with a very tough schedule.
Unfortunately, our schedule doesn't get any easier, and we need to find a spark. If it takes putting Grier on the o-line or starting Ballenger at QB, we should do it. The Buffs look flat, but there is always next week. Let's Go Buffs!
Posted by salsajohn on October 15, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Cody Hawkins' play has regressed since his freshman season. He looks stronger, put in good work over the summer, must have a better grasp of the offense and has more playing experience, yet his play has fallen off (significantly).
I have no idea if the other QB's on the roster are the answer, but it can't be denied that Cody is just not as good a player as he was last season. Other than the CSU win, he hasn’t impressed me in any other 2008 game.
I'm not hating on the Buffs; just pointing out something obvious and alarming.
Nepatalli drives me nuts with his two-faced method of criticizing Dan Hawkins, while baselessly fawning over Bo Pelini and Nebraska (i.e. 3-3 record, horrible home losses, recruiting failures and coaching/player meltdowns). That said, NepaT is truthful with SOME (not all) of his criticism of Cody and the Coach.

The one thing I keep coming back to in Hawk's comments are: "I think if you're a little trigger happy ... if you resort to emotion, that you sometimes have an issue where it may not be all that guy's fault. You just kind of feel like emotionally that's what you should do even though there is not a lot of tangible evidence there that says, 'Yeah this is all on you' "
If I remember correctly, B Jax was not our starter in 2006 for the Montana State game. Wasn't James Cox...Then...Hawkins threw in B Jax. It seemed like that was a quick fix.
I'm not a Cody hater...but I do think his play is limiting our team. He underthrew at least 3 deep balls to open receivers in the KU game alone. His passes get knocked down too often and his throws lack velocity. I know I've supported him in the past, but I think this is a trend. When safeties don't respect the pass, they can play the run. And when we can't run, we can't have a play action game. Cody's height isn't the problem. Chase Daniel and Reesing are about as tall as he is. His problem, when compared to these guys, is lack of escapability and lack of arm strength.
Thus, I think this is a perfect game to give Ballenger a chance. He is unproven, but he has what Cody doensn't. Arm strength and escapability. Just my opinion. Either way...GO BUFFS!

I have been a big Cody fan since he came to CU. I tink he is a gammer -a student of the game - maybe the best we have right now, etc. Not to mention - a great kid.
But I have also expressed the need for change for exactly the same reason as what Klatt mentioned in that final paragraph of the article. I have said a change could totally affect Cody's perspective and help him mentally. Exactly as in the Klatt situation.
I have said over and over that if you change - Ballenger might provide a spark. He might do better than people expect. If so - great - we're ahead of the game. If not - you bring Cody back -
just like in Klatt's case - and it might have a much needed impact on Cody.
I wonder if coaches are not going to give Ballanger a legit shot because he might do better than Cody - and then coaches really would have a QB controversey to deal with.
I bet it will turn out more like what happened with Klatt and Cox. But maybe not. Either way - CU benefits. If Ballenger comes through - CU benefits. If he doesn't and Cody cames back stronger and better - CU benefits.
If CU were in the hunt for the North title - I wouldn't mess wit it. But they way things are going.....

I have been a coach Dan and Cody Hawkins supporter from the day that Cody took the reigns. I was even a believer that he was the proper choice for the job when we had no passing game and only 2 wins a couple of seasons ago. But now I have this image in my head of a reciever running wide open 15 yards from the line of scimmage and a young bewildered qb not seeing him, and then the image of the same qb ducking his head and running almost girl like into the endzone. And then actually thinking about throwing the ball away left handed. That was about all I could take. I have been waiting for a glimpse of the poise and ability I saw last year (it is his 2nd year starting, and there is no reason that Cody shouldn't be better) We have a couple of the best young running backs in the big 12, if not the country, in the backfield, but without a passing attack or the threat of a qb taking off with the ball (aka: Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Texas, or Kansas.) then the rest of the running game is going to suffer, inexperienced line or not. Cody has had plenty of time to throw the ball, and if he would look around a little, many times could actually run for alot of yardage instead of waiting for the hit in the backfield.
I am not for rotating the qb's, but I would definately not wait until the game is lost to pull the cold one out. Infact watching from the sidelines may give him some insight to help slow the game down a little. It is definately way too fast for him at the moment.

fish makes a great point about holding onto the ball, putting Cody in positions to succeed, and moving the chains on the ground. CU has to run to pass, KSU has to pass to run. KSU can pass, CU hasn't shown the ability to run effectively. Adv. KSU. KSU's defense has stopped NOONE even lowly A & M, CU has slowed Pat White, Held the horns to fewer points then the Sooners, and did well against KU depsite the score. Adv. CU. Defense wins games, and hopefully this is just another example of that. Go Buffs.

My only concern about starting Ballenger is what it might do to his confidence. If he is constantly running for his life, he may get into the bad habit of his first read being who is going to hit him rather than who is open. I'm not worried about Cody's confidence - he's a gamer and would react like Klatt did. He'd still lead the team from the bench.
I will also agree that a stronger arm is needed. Too many times we've seen defensive backs closing on the receiver because there was too much air under the ball. We haven't seen enough of Ballenger yet to get a good feel of his accuracy, but we need to stretch the field.
With the exception of Missouri, we're entering the relatively soft part of the schedule, and shouldn't see quite as fierce a pass rush. If Cody is still at less than 50% by half time Sat, I'd say it's time for the change, especially if we've generated any kind of run offense.

I think KSU is going to stomp CU this week.
They both have poor defenses that give up points.
KSU is putting 40 points a game on the board, CU can't hardly score a point.
Look for a blowout against a bad team. Not a good matchup at all.

I agree oldbuffer - if Cody can't lead this offense on a couple of long, sustained drives in the first half against a bottom tier defense then maybe we look to shake things up.
Our defense is a lot better than people think - it's just a lot harder with no depth and your offense going three and out consistently. Look for our D to step up this weekend.

The QB isn't going to make a difference with an O line is as young and depleted as the Buffs' is. That said, I think they should give Ballenger some more playing time earlier in the game if Cody is once again under non-stop pressure. We have nothing to lose at this point in the season. If for nothing less, I think they should do this to simply give Cody a break and some needed rest and rejuvenation. He can't keep sitting back there getting his a** handed to him and hope to gain any confidence. His confidence has obviously dwindled as is. Our O line is a mess; we have a running game that is beyond weak (with the exception of Rodney Stewart) and extremely sub par receivers.
I mean, give me a break. At 5'11, 175 lbs, Cody Crawford shouldn't even be an option as a Big 12 receiver. Patrick Williams has always intrigued me, but it's now apparent that he's never going to materialize (he's now a senior and still can't produce). McKnight is a solid slot receiver, who can make key possession & first-down type receptions, but is no threat otherwise. Josh Smith is a deep threat and is improving, but is really the only weapon and has yet to make BIG plays on a consistent basis.
If we can get a healthy (and experienced) O line back and RECRUIT big time, play-making receivers and a big time, play-making QB I like the future.
Unfortunately though, we need to thing defense too. The D is not as vulnerable and seems to have fewer holes to fill, but we can't forget about it (especially the D line).
Hopefully Ray Polk is the real deal and is gaining from his redshirt year because I don't know what the future holds for Scott. I wouldn't be surprised if he transfers. He came in out of shape (hence the nagging injuries) and has been upstaged by a 5'6", 170 lb, two star recruit who wasn't given a shot at most MAC teams. Sad. It's all about desire and heart and it seems as though Scott lacks those two intangibles.
Until then, our offensive output relies solely on Rodney Stewart. And we had better hope that our D can continue to give their best effort to just keep us in games. That's disappointing.

Fish tells us the OLine issues shouldn't be used as an excuse for the offensive struggles, but why deny the reality of the situation? Is it a coincidence that CU is tied with Baylor at #95 nationally in Sacks Allowed with 14? Texas A&M is the lone Big 12 program with more, 17, which ranks them at #110. Given that fact, it's no surprise CU and Baylor are tied for #86 nationally in Tackles for Loss Allowed with 38. I read that Cody was sacked 15 times in 13 games last year, this year it's 11 in 6. Ballenger, in 4 series, has been sacked 3 times. Just in the KU game alone, there were 4 "hurries" and 3 of those came on failed 3rd down conversions. Is it a coincidence that 10 of the 14 sacks have occurred in the last 3 games? By no means am I dismissing Cody's struggles in the accuracy department, but lets get real about some of the factors contributing to the problem.Any QB, regardless of who they are, won't be as efficient if they're being pressured. Hopefully, Helfrich will call more roll-outs this week.

LVBuff , you'd best take KSU in that bet, the wise guys are only giving them 3 points because it's at home and KSU's defense sucks.
If it turns to a shoot out, KSU wins easy.

you forgot the TEs Rashaan. Devenny has developed into a fine receiving TE and I think Geer had an excellent first year. Where have they gone?
It is obvious Cody will start against the mildcats. If this game is a repeat of the last 3 that means any bowl hopes are out the window. Considering that, Give Ballenger the next several games to improve. If he doesnt you can always go back to Cody. He has 2 more years of eligibility.
Yes the O line is a problem area for both qbs, but 4 bad games in a row doesnt qualify as "trigger happy"

Rashaan...thank you for backing me up. I've basically been saying the same thing. I will repeat some other points:
Mr. Hawkins and staff, your returning players on offense are showing no progress. Everyone said you would be able to turn average talent into good players because you can coach, like you did at Boise State. Sumler and Moyd are lousy. Nelson isn't even on the radar as a back-up option (Your job is to mold this guy and if you can't mold him it means either your coaching or recruiting is suspect, because to date he is a bust...and a waste of money). The receivers drop balls. Scott showed up out of shape. The 2nd string players are unprepared to step into a starting role. To date your ability to coach 2 star athletes to a higher level has not worked. The offense looked like a deer in the headlights of a freight train against FSU, Texas, and KU. (Paralized and run-over) I didn't expect you to win those games. But I didn't expect a tail whipping that looked like a bottom tier WAC/MW team playing a BCS team...because that is what the team looked like.
These are fair assessments of your program. I'm not saying we should fire the coaching staff or come down on the kids so hard that they loose confidence. I'm just saying Hawk Love needs a lot more Tough Love. (And I get the Hawk Love strategy. After Barnett, the athletes, the administration, the fans, the town of Boulder...they all needed it. Those wounds are healed now and it was the right strategy for the time. So, times have changed and the strategy needs to change too.)
On a side note, go get some tennis ball canons. Fire 1000 balls a day at those receives. Give them one week with the machine, after that, every dropped ball is a sprint. (Btw, TexasTech use a tennis ball canon as a drill...espn did a story on it....look at their passing game.)

blackand gold... FOR YOU TO SAY SUMLER hasn,t improved is ridiculous. Whats your barometer? The fact that he runs behind a depleted line. The only reason stewart has had success is he can mmake plays by himself. He has constantly made something out of nothing

oh there is change in the air, and I'm not talking about a QB change. There are going to be some good things happening this week. Just wait and watch. This is gonna be a great game to be a buff fan. Stats, execution, excuses and controversy have nothing on gut instinct magic mojo. There is a renewed sense of unity and vigor thats going to spill out on the field saturday, and I can't wait to be a part of it.

Without a line all of the RB's, besides Speedy, are useless. And that means a lot. Because RB's are the type of positions where YOUR JOB is to make things happen. I can't believe you don't get this. Also, do you seriously watch Sumler play and say, you know what that guy is good and he looks better than he did last year. I don't.
Posted by Saheeb on October 15, 2008 at 1:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)
If we don't have the line to run nor protect the QB well I hope we start doing some things like quick outs/side throws to the RBs, TE, screen passes, etc. before the rush can get in on him. They're rolling Cody out some to try to compensate for that, and the D-line batting some his balls down, but it's not working real well it appears. I saw a few teams last weekend counter teams with great pass rush this way quite effectively. Wonder if it might work for us as well.

2 tight end sets don't work when the guards are getting blown off the line, its a straight shot to the qb and thats been a problem since EWU. They have to figure out how to shore up the line or its goodbye to bowling

They should hire the offensive line coach from barnett era. He was much better than grimes.
Dan HAwkins should be worried that Bohn doesn't yank his a-- out instead. He has won 11 games in 3 years.

How is it that we hired a "genius" at offense and are last in the big 12 in Passing, rushing, points scored and tied for last in conference wins??
It's time the coaches quit getting a free pass by the press.

At the end of this year Hawkins and Bohn should be evaluating the O'Line coach, the OC, special teams coach, RB coach, and the quarterbacks coach.
On a grad scale I would give them the following:
O'Line C-
Offecnsive Coordinator C-
Special Teams D+
QB Coach C-
RB Coach D+ (No existing talent has shown growth and Speedy is new)
excuses are for wussies. improve from hear out, or its time determine who is not meeting realistic expecations for year 4.

What exactly are realistic expectations BlackAndGold? Did you really think a team starting this many freshmen and sophomores was going to win 8-10 games?
Go onto Rivals or Scout and check out the CU commits from 2004 and 2005. These players should be the leaders of this team - more than half of them aren't even around anymore. Some of the ones that you do see - like Gardner McKay, Kevin Moyd, and Devin Head- are getting outplayed by redshirt freshman and sophomores.
This team is very young and not very deep - so when you lose players like MTM, Miller, Itlis, Simas, Burney, Katoa, Major, Hudgins, Celestine, Tau -- all players that were starters or could have been significant contributors --- then you have to readjust your expectations, especially with a team this young.

You got that right, WhosyourDaddy.
The CU QB job belonged to Cody while he was still in high school and there won't be any changes as long as Dan Hawkins is the coach.
They recruited Nelson, M.V juco with 2 yrs. college football experience under his belt. The next thing you know, the coaches son freshman is trying out for starter, with Helfrich stating to the daily camera, "Cody is a tad better than Nelson."
Reminds me of the Bugs Bunny "101 Rabbit Tales."
Help me understand this. I'm just not quite getting it. How can a kid fresh out of high school be a "tad better" than someone who is already playing at college level?
And it won't be any different with Ballinger either, regardless of how good he is.
Lil Hawk will always be a "tad better."

the offense is offensive. the offensive is offensive.
Okay depleted line.
Okay tough to run.
Okay tough to pass
The play calling sucks period. Watch the replay of the game. Very interesting.
Okay poor execution in a lot of cases.
It still comes to the QB position. Cody is an average player and playing below his average level.
6 games 6 average to poor performances at the QB position.
Make a change. Check it out. If B can't do it then put Cody back in. Give B a half to work it out. My god you have given Cody 19 games and look what you got.

k-state has not played the schedule, not even close, that colorado has. inexplicably, they can't stop anyone, ever, especially in the second half. they win with offense, and more importantly, special teams. they want one, maybe two touchdowns on specials. they expect to dominate this aspect of the game, and hope to hold their own offensively, cause they have no corporate confidence they can keep other teams from scoring, lots. colorado must be ready.

Two major issues as I see it.
1. Buffs have not had an above average QB, or lately an average QB, for 15 years. Ochs could have been but we know what happened there.
2. No passing to RBs or TEs. They try and go downfield to much and that is not a strength. Need to start trying some toss sweeps as well.

Wow, here I thought providing some facts about Sacks Allowed (10 of 14 in the last 3 games) and Tackles for Loss Allowed might generate some thoughts on the matter, obviously I was wrong. Apparently none of you believe the abundance of sacks and hurries, for both QB's, has contributed to the offensive struggles.I thought it was very telling. I find it interesting that fans would rather dwell on Hawk's relationship with his son, than look at what I believe is a major issue, the young, depleted, inexperienced OLine. Cody's been sacked at a much higher rate than `07 and Ballenger's already gone down 3 times in 4 series.Any Head Coach will tell you the offense starts with the OLine and right now, it's not a strong point for the Buffs. In the near future it will be, but not at the moment.

buff4life...according to Scout.com, KSU had 32 recruits sign a LOI in `08, 19 were JUCO's. I don't know how many of those 19 are playing this season, but clearly Prince was desperate to win now after not going bowling last season. They dropped Fresno State from this year's schedule and replaced them with an automatic "W" instead.
I'd much rather build a program with guys that will be in Boulder for 4-5 years. The Buffs were pursuing JUCO All American WR Corey Surrency this past recruiting cycle, he signed with Florida State, has 6 catches in 5 games, with 1 start. Mohler, the lone JUCO CU signed, has worked out well, but who knows how many of those guys make big contributions to D1 programs?

diz
Of course the o line is a problem. Sorry crap happens. Are you saying that the coaches can't redefine some offensive plays that take advantage of what is left of the o line?
Last year Cody surprised the d coordinators. They have him figured out now and cut him out of the play right away because they know he probably cannot make the tough play. B has to run the same dumb plays defined by the OC for Cody so what do you expect?
Sure the O line has injury issues but to lay the blame on them is ridiculous. It starts with the coaches and continues immediately to the QB. He has digressed but mostly he has been made "non-relevant" by the opposing dc's.
Watch the opposing d-lines and see what they do.
They power rush and when the get done power rushing they really power rush. The linebackers look for speedy or whomever and the dbacks can watch for speedy as well. They know there is no deep threat. They know there is no "jamming it quickly into a tight place. They just attack Cody and then attack him some more. Sure he has a couple of good plays a game that sometimes do something nice. But it is the 4 to 6 disaster plays he has that kills us and is caused by the "attack Cody" strategy and you can beat the buffs.
And those mistakes give even inept offenses usual great field position.
I am not convinced the offensive schemes have played into whatever the strengths of Cody are. If you could have a montage of the offensive plays run by the buffs this year you would shut it off early. It is a joke.
Hey I support the buffs. I support Hawk and his drive to continually get better. I will suffer through or celebrate with whatever we end-up with.
I will not let Hawk (continually get better) or the team (continually get better) off the hook from continually getting better. They need to walk this walk and I am not seeing it. I am patient but I expect to see it.
Make Cody the backup for this game. Get a new start. It cannot be any worse eh?
uh oh buffaloes.

hey vegasbuffan..dude, let me help you step into 2008...reporters read these blogs. take a look around at the news stories this week...where do you guys think these writers get story ideas from...or there questions...they use ALL of their resources....and fan based blogs are where ideas and get tossed out almost by the minute....being either propped up or torn apart.
Denver Post:
Colorado coaches are working on "creative ways" to get tight ends and running backs more involved in the passing game, Hawkins said.
Buffzone.com:
Geer said his role has changed as the oldest and strongest tight end on the roster. He is needed to help in blocking, particularly in the wake of two injuries to starting offensive linemen.
Tight ends coach Kent Riddle said Geer is the best blocker he has among his group of tight ends
...uhhhhhh, TE blocking and short passes...hear that anywhere...oh yeah...since sunday morning on these blogs.
its not all coming from here...i would be crazy to say that...but if were a reporter and a bunch of bloggers had tossed out an idea and my job was to ask questions and write stories...you bet i'd be cruising these blogs.

Heart - Good to hear your opinion, but let me warn you that you have to have a thick skin to particpate in this discussion. If you you even mention that Cody's hair doesn't look too good you will be cussed at, accused of being the same person as the other 100 people who has noted Cody's deficiencies, and worst of all, accused of being Tom Osbourne.
If you go so far as to say something really inflamatory like: "Cody doesn't seem to be very tall" his worshipers will track you down and seek revenge.
So welcome to the discussion! ...and don't pay any attention to buff4life we think he's trying to incorporate the CU fight song into his Jazzercise routine.

Once again, whosyourdaddy mischaracterizing what goes on here...it's not that Buffs fans mind a fellow Buff Backer expressing their issues with Hawk/Cody, it's what fanatics do...but in the case of nepa/whos, it's the CONSTANT, WORN OUT, REPETITIVE, REDUNDANT BASHING of all things Hawkins that eventually wears thin...seriously, by now, they'd have to be utter morons to believe their Hawk Hate Cult hasn't gotten their message across...what's the point, other than to get a rise out of Buffs fans? Here's a tidbit from a Rivals.com article (just for daddy and nepa's pleasure): If Cody Hawkins' last name was Smith, would he still be the Buffaloes’ starting quarterback? The answer is yes. He has received no favors because he is the son of the head coach. But the longer Hawkins struggles behind center, the more people will clamor for a change.

The repetition like a broken record among those who pretend to be CU fans is for a reason.
No one gives a rats --- about their opinion because you can spot a phony transparent hater real quick, and as a result, they are frustrated.
No one will make any changes no matter how often a kid with a zit filled face writes on this board under the false pretence (he cares about CU).
When you sit day after day and express a consistent pattern of hate, then turn around and claim to be a CU fan then you are not only a liar, but no one is buying your BS.

I read this over at Fox Sports, a quote from Jim Harbaugh: "If you say what is a good football team, or is a football team ready to play, you'll judge a defense by the way they tackle,'' Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh said. "On the offensive side, can they block? Can the backs block? Can the backs play physical? That's just any football team. If you're going to be a good football team, you better be able to tackle and you better be able to block.'' It seems like the Buffs defense tackles ok, but blocking is clearly a problem right now. Harbaugh's starting 2 Seniors, 2 Juniors and 1 Soph on his OLine. Can't wait until the Buffs OLine has some experience under their belts as well. Stanford's not great, but they're 4-3, 3-1 in conference and Harbaugh attributes much of that to their OLine's play...

Top QB's won't be coming to CU for quite sometime. The issue is the perception of unfairness. Top QB prospects won't put up with that kind of uncertainty and they will go elsewhere.
Just look at what has happened to our recent QB recruits:
Walters - moved to DB
Geer - moved to TE
Cox - run off
White - run off
Jackson - thrown into an untenable situation and then made the scapegoat.
Devenny - moved to TE
Nelson - duped into thinking he might get a fair shot.
Ballenger - will never play meaningful minutes
Hansen - will transfer next year
Cody - knows the playbook really, really, well!

Dizonrocks: thanks for the insights. I live in the Bay Area and, even though I'm (secondly) a Cal fan and hate Stanford their play has improved dramatically. They play with fire, tackle well and are getting some speed guys. One thing I did notice very soon after Hawk took over is that the horrible tackling of the Neuheisel and Barnett years quickly disappeared. The first guy who got to the ball carrier/receiver actually wrapped them up finally. The big plays have diminished considerably. I think the D has tackled well for a few years now, except for a handful of games.

I admit these sites get negative from time to time, and they should continue. We are fans of a team that was a consistent figure on the national stage throughout the 90's> We have suffered through 5 full years of ineptitude. We have seen our team continually embarrassed on national television. We have seen Missouri and -say it aint so- KANSAS become the powers of the Bg 12 north. Let me restate- KANSAS and MISSOURI at the top. I dont see how you can take issue with people looking for answers to what is wrong with the team. We are fans that are hurting because our beloved program refuses to let us hold onto any real hope. Dont say that we are not fans because we have high expectations that are continually let down.

Here's some reality Whos:
Walters - "moved to DB"- Yes and he has a real shot at a pro career at DB. ANd he is a Senior this year so who made that move?
Geer - "moved to TE" - Ditto on the shot at a pro career as a TE.
Cox - "run off" Really? Run off? Is that what we call graduation these days? Cox was a Barnett recruit and played sparingly his entire career. Klatt wasn't the most mobile QB but he was never really threatened by Cox either (one half start not withstanding).
White - "run off"- Better would be "ran off" as in couldn't handle it. He could have been the starter.
Jackson - "thrown into an untenable situation and then made the scapegoat." -Good one. Yeah, he was thrown into the fire all right. His entire career at CU he was saying how he wanted to be the QB. The coaches, fans, media kept saying how athletic he was. Again, Barnett's recruit and Barnett never seriously considered him at QB. He only ended up the starter by default. Cox crashed (mostly by being immobile), White transferred and Cody was red shirted. That left BJax. Considering how he ended up, I think he was seriously lacking in the brains/judgment area and that ultimately did him in.
Devenny - "moved to TE"- If he had a shot at QB they would have left him there. You may notice all over the country there are players who used to be QBs in high school and now playing any number of positions in college other than QB. You might also notice that there have been several college QBs moved to other positions in the pros. But yeah, CU is the only one and they do it only so that Cody can start.
Nelson - "duped into thinking he might get a fair shot." He got a fair shot. Who says he should have been handed it without competition? If he got shafted do you seriously think Ballenger stays after his red shirt year?
Ballenger - "will never play meaningful minutes" He is a red shirt freshman and already has played more minutes than most red shirt freshmen have in the country. He has played more than Nelson. He is the top backup. If/when the kid develops into a starter, he will get his due. You have never played meaningful minutes though.
Hansen - "will transfer next year" - Yeah he along with DS. In fact the entire team is getting ready to mass transfer to Nebraska because they want the winning program. Good one. Hansen is sitting in the driver's seat of his own career. If he is as good as some fans say he is, then he has a real shot to leap frog to the top of the charts next spring. He is a red shirt freshman this year. So no, he won't be playing this year, and I seriously doubt he would want to be behind a patchwork line and burn a year of eligibility.

When a coach makes his son the starting QB there's a presumption created in the public's mind that he is doing so because of nepotism.
That presumption can, however, be rebutted:
If the son has the typical attributes of a QB, say he's a Josh Freeman (6'6" - 250 - big arm - quick feet) then the presumption in favor of nepotism becomes a 50/50 proposition and most reasonable fans are willing to wait and see. But, as in the case of Cody, where he is far below average in size, speed, and arm strength, the presumption remains in effect and it's up to Cody to rebut the presumption another way.
The second way he can rebut the presumption is that he can play well. Unfortunately, for Cody he has not played well (even though the offense was changed in order to avoid exposing his weaknesses). In fact, Cody has played very poorly by any objective standard. His safety against KU capped off the poor play by making him look ridiculous at the QB position. The lack of poise was simply startling.
Thus, the presumption remains in effect. It has not been rebutted. Cody only plays because his father is the coach.

fish...what's your "excuse" for EXPECTING this team to beat the #1 team in the country? what's your "excuse" for EXPECTING this team to beat the #15 team in the country, at their place, where they've got a 13 game winning streak in place. If you didn't notice, Kansas is now 16-2 the past two seasons, losing by 8 to Mizzu in `07 and by 3 to #20 South Florida on the road this year. What's your "excuse" for EXPECTING this team to beat Florida State on the road, who's currently sitting in the #28 spot in the Coaches Poll? I know, I know, you've been attending games for 26 years and you just want more from your Buffs, right? Regardless of who and where they're playing. I'm repeating myself, but Pinkel had 3 losing seasons in his first 4 at Mizzu. Mangino was 10 games under .500 prior to 2007. Gundy was 18-19 at Oklahoma State. It's not an excuse that a young, injury depeleted OLine has struggled against their best competition this year (10 of 14 sacks allowed in the last 3 games), it's reality. Since according to you, there's no leadership, are you suggesting starting over with a new staff? Someone that can beat a #1 team with Frosh and Sophs at key positions? I guess I expect there will be some losses against top tier programs right now, but will continue to believe, like the admins do, that that won't always be the case in the near future.

Well Dizon, my take on that "If Cody's last name was Smith, would he be a starter"?
Let's go back to 2006, more than likely White would have been the starter for 2 seasons grooming the way for Ballenger to step in this season with a fair competition with Hawkins and Nelson for the starting spot.
Letting the OC make a totally objective decision I believe Ballenger would be the starter and CU would be running the spread to equalize their short comings the way a lot of other teams now do.
I see 'Smith" as competing for the #2 spot with Nelson.

It's the difference between subjective and objective sports. It this were golf, track, swimming, etc., who the coach is wouldn't matter. If Cody shot the lowest score on the golf course he would be the number 1 player on the team. End of story.
The problem arises because choosing a football QB is a subjective decision. Of course, you can use some of the objective factors mentioned previously to project success (size, speed, arm strength) but ultimately it's just the subjective opinion of the coach that counts.
So the question becomes how objective can the coach be in a subjective decision about his own son?
To me, and at least a few others, Hawk failed that test and allowed his hopes for his son to cloud his judgment.

In case you hadn't figured it out, it is not Hawkins who chooses the starting quarterback. But I guess you wouldn't believe that because it doesn't fit into your conspiracy theory.
The person you should be ticked off at is White. By your own admission his quitting on the team is what has set things back at QB. I agree, but I am not being petty about it.
Golf, tennis, swimming, and track are all individual sports. There is no leadership element. And as for your "size, speed, arm strength" criteria, I suggest you take a look at the top recruits on either Rivals or Scout. Sort by those factors and you will see that it does not sort by rankings in order of "size, speed, arm strength". There are big guys who are low ranked and there are fast guys that are low ranked, etc. and by your definition several top QBs are benefiting from some sort of unfair bias because they are not all fast, big and with guns for arms. Reesing, and Daniels come to mind for instance...
There is a reason you play all of the games. There is a reason there are upsets every single weekend. Because stats like the ones you love are meaningless and only the play on the field is what counts.

We all loved the movie "Rudy" but this isn't Rudy. This is a kid who has had all the advantages and special treatment that his dad could give him. The skids have been greased for Cody and lots of better-qualified and more deserving kids have been run over in the process.
And, no I don't believe the OC made the QB decision. If Hawk had admitted to making that decision they would have violated CU's anti-nepotisn rule.
And finally, if Cody had Reesing or Daniels' arm we wouldn't be having this conversation, but Cody can't come close to making the throws those guys can.
We definately agree that there is more to playing QB than objective factors but it wouldn't hurt Cody if he had some subjective factors as well.

Vk, as I stated, I have no problem with people talking about Cody's play this season and debating whether we should put Ballenger in. That's football talk.
The issue with Whos and nepa is that they never gave it a chance and try to spin in the nepotism thing.
Whos, you mentioned that "everyone" you talk to about CU football mentions the "Cody is the coach's son". Really? Do you start conversations with them by saying your name is "whosyourdaddy" and they already know your agenda?
No one, I repeat, no one I have ever had a conversation about CU football with outside of this forum has ever mentioned that CU's starting QB is only playing because his daddy's head coach.
I've talked about it with Neraska fans, Michigan fans, Ohio State fans, even CSU fans. None talk about it. They talk about the play of the offense in general and on occasion specifically about Cody's performance (mostly about how he is in a slump) but they never say anything remotely connected to his parentage as being a factor.
Maybe I am the only one they don't talk about this with. Anyone else here (other than nepa) been getting any flack about Cody only starting because his dad is the head coach?
Posted by Buffs055 on October 16, 2008 at 4:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The O line is patchwork and definitely young and inexperienced. That being said, Cody needs to pull his skirt up and perform. His reputation is that he lacks tremendous athletic ability, but is intelligent behind center. He played that way last year, but not this year. If I was a defensive line coach playing against Cody, I would blitz constantly. He has very limited ability to read a blitz and has shown poor decision making in simply getting rid of the ball when he's in trouble. (i.e, last week's safety was right out of Pop Warner ball) Tyler Hansen appears to be the long term answer when his red shirt is lifted, but I don't see Hansen, Ballenger or anyone else getting a chance until Cody has graduated. I'm not buying the company line that the father/son issue isn't a factor here.

dizon - you just keep feeding the flame of a point that has no basis in substantiation. No none can really know if there is bias, though it is reasonable to believe that bias exists.
what are facts include: cody is short for a DI qb, he has a weak arm and is slow, his dad is head coach and has the final word on team decisions, the buff o is at the bottom of the conference.
can you honestly say that you are pleased with cody's and the o's performance this year?
and if not, how would you change it? give it more time?
Posted by BuffTime on October 16, 2008 at 5:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)
fish, you dilute your valid points by continuing to support whos and nepa. I don't think it is reasonable to believe that bias towards Cody is the reason he is the starter. Simple and obvious facts (versus the opinion so often put forth as facts by whos and nepa). Facts like CU has only lost one coach in 2 years. These guys already have to deal with no long term contracts and being under paid. Their careers depend on the W/L outcome of the teams they work for as well as the performance of their specific units. Do you seriously think that they (all of them excluding Hawk himself) would put their own careers in jeopardy just so the boss's kid can play Div. 1 football?
Ballenger saw what went on in practices last year while he redshirted. If he thought that Nelson got the shaft and that Cody only started since he was Hawk's kid, do you seriously think he would sacrifice his playing career to stay at CU?
If you don't want to believe that Dan Hawkins can't be objective, then look at those around him that also have a lot at stake. They are sticking with CU and if the case was as whos and nepa made it out to be then at least some of them would have bailed. Wouldn't they?
As I said fish, we don't agree on everything but you make your valid comments become less palatable when you back whos and nepa. They have offered no objective reason in almost 3 years now of why we should believe them. All they do is make baseless claims against Hawk, Cody and the team.

I, too, think Cody needs to step up and start playing in a more smart and confident way. I agree that running backwards 12-16 yards into the end zone was one of the most irritating things I've seen in a while from a CU QB. Definitely, some wood to chop. I'm ready to see them give Ballenger more time on the field.
But enough of the nepotism & height references. It's old and stale now. Until you repetitive naysayers can point to a practice, scrimmage or series of plays in a game where another QB legitimately showed they played better than the starter, moaning about a future nobody can see where nobody else gets a chance is futile whining. I have no allegiance to Cody, I've been to many of the scrimmages, practices & games, and nothing I've seen in person shows me that any favoritism is going on. Can you say the same?

The Times-Call did their midseason report this week and they gave the CU pass offense an "F" because Cody has looked so bad and played so poorly.
The fans at Folsom are openly booing Cody. On TV, in the newspapers, and on the internet, they are ridiculing the poor kid.
If Cody throws a pick, misses a wide open receiver, runs backward into his endzone, or throws a three yard pass on 3rd and 10 against this weak KSU defense it's really going to get ugly at Folsom this Saturday.
I just don't understand why his father would put him through this when he apparently could have suited up in Boise?

EP - Might help if you think! I didn't say Cody could "play" at Boise, but I think Peterson would let him suit-up just like he's letting Hawk's other son Drew suit-up. It's favor to Dan.
As a practical matter, if you've watched Boise play, they have a kid at QB who can really throw a football. No chance in the world Cody could beat him out in a fair competition.

Again, just watch the damn game! Again, you are hashing over things that have already occurred. Take it for what its worth. If you were paid to spout off, with just a little validity, whos your daddy, maybe you could buy a beer at the Sink. We will soon be parading the next generation of would be recruits to the media and all of this negative crap can't help. Hopefully they don't know about the DC. I would be very leery of coming to a school loaded with so many outhouse critics and naysayers.
