Woelk: Victory over West Virginia big step for CU

They never blinked. The thought of losing never crossed the Colorado Buffaloes' minds Thursday night.

Honestly. Not when West Virginia got back up off the mat after two early haymakers and tied the score. Not when their own mistakes kept them from rebuilding a lead. Not even when the Mountaineers took possession with the score tied, two minutes left in regulation and a chance to escape a frenzied Folsom Field with a win.

The Buffs never thought about anything else but winning.

"All night long, we had the feeling we were going to win," said Buff O-line coach Jeff Grimes. "There was never that feeling of dread, never that thought of losing, even when we were stopping ourselves. We just kept thinking we were just one or two plays away from winning.

"That feeling never changed."

Weren't these the same Buffaloes who 12 days earlier barely escaped with a narrow win over I-AA Eastern Washington? The same Buffaloes who had fans avoiding tall buildings and loaded firearms?

Yep. One and the same. After the win over Eastern Washington, CU coach Dan Hawkins said the Buffs had beaten a good team. People scoffed.

Thursday night, minutes after his Buffs had beaten No. 21 WVU in overtime, Hawkins said the same thing.

Anyone out there scoffing this morning?

That WAS a good team the Buffaloes beat Thursday night. A very good football team, with maybe the best quarterback the Buffs will see all year -- and when you consider the Buffs still have Texas, Kansas and Missouri on the schedule, that's a strong statement.

Folks around the nation will be calling this one an upset today. They'll compare it to Colorado's win over No. 3 Oklahoma a year ago.

No comparison. The Buffs played out of their minds against Oklahoma, got all kinds of breaks and beat a team that probably would have beaten them nine out of 10 times if they'd played that many times.

Thursday night, the Buffs played on an even keel with the Mountaineers. Play this one 12 times, and you'd have a dozen games right down to the wire.

This one wasn't an upset. The Buffaloes played West Virginia straight up all night long, and when the opportunity presented itself, they won. They outgained the visitors 366-354, and matched them big play for big play.

No fluke here.

Yes there were mistakes -- and if you're a Colorado fan, that's not all bad. Look at the improvement the Buffs made from one game to the next, and suddenly, the brutal stretch that still awaits the Buffs doesn't look so daunting. Continue to improve at that rate, and it could be a fun stretch.

(That's Florida State, Texas, Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri, in case you've forgotten).

Mistakes? After scoring on their first two possessions, the Buffs failed to score the next 10 times they got the ball. Quarterback Cody Hawkins threw an interception to end one drive, then fumbled when he was blindsided to end another deep in WVU territory. Cha'pelle Brown, the hero of the Eastern Washington game with an interception return for a touchdown, let another possible pick-six bounce to the turf near the end of the second half.

Then came three straight three-and-outs to start the second half. Costly penalties were still a problem.

But the defense never wavered. West Virginia QB Pat White did hit the Buffs with two big scoring runs, but the Buffs aren't the first team -- and won't be the last -- to get hit by White. When push came to shove, the Buffs did the shoving and West Virginia didn't have the necessary push.

(We interrupt this column to notify CU's next opponents that Rodney Stewart is a bona fide stud. If the Buffs had needed a touchdown to win in OT, we would have loved their chances with Stewart.).

Don't underestimate the importance of this win. The Buffs are 3-0 for the first time since 2004 and only the second time since 1995.

"We knew we could win this game," said senior center Daniel Sanders. "We knew this was the type of game that could put us in the spotlight. We just had to prove to everyone else that we're capable."

That being said, the stretch ahead is still a nasty one. After the game, Hawkins said his team would spend today reviewing Thursday night's game, take Saturday off and then begin preparing for Florida State on Sunday.

One week later, it will be Texas, then Kansas. All are ranked in the top 25 today.

"It's a big win for the kids and a big win for the program," Grimes said. "It's a big step up. But there's a lot of work to do out there, and the kids know it. It doesn't get any easier from here on out, no question."

Still, this was one of the games the Buffs needed to win. They needed a win early in this stretch to provide momentum and confidence. They needed a win to take a step forward.

Thursday night, they accomplished that goal.

They didn't blink.

Any win is a good win.......Way to hang tuff Buffs!!! 3 and 0 and still improving

fsu is beatable....The Buffs need to take this momentum into that game.

It will interesting to see how much the Buffs have closed the speed gap from the last time they played fsu...

Have we lost perspective of how big a win needs to be before fans storm the field? That should happen once every five years, preferably after a win over a #1 ranked team or to clinch a Conference championship. Not after a non-conference win over an average team who was previously beaten by East Carolina. You would have thought we were coming off an 0-11 season.
A win is a win, but I'm still embarrassed at how the students represented CU on national TV.

Wigginsbuff sounds like a prissy little old lady who should have gone to a small Eastern single-sex college playing NAIA or Division III field hockey. I personally believe all the anti-celebration nonsense that pervades college athletics is taking most of the fun out of it all. Go students!

I loved all the fans in black running on the field. It was great, looked really cool on TV and pumped up the victorious players.

There are definitely recruits that will be drawn to such an atmosphere.

This Florida based Buff will do his part next Saturday. GO BUFFS.

I'm not gonna harsh on wiggins but I agree completely with dsnow. From what I could see, CU fans were jacked up, loud, totally into the game the whole game and ecstatic at the end. Let 'em celebrate. The team feeds off that energy, the program needs it to keep moving forward. Rein it in and you'll take the air out of a very good thing.

Maybe now Folsom will sell out. The team poured their guts out and were rewarded for their effort. Cut down on the penalties and hang on to the ball and this game is over before overtime. Way to go Buffs!! See you in JAX.

I'll go hard on him
Wigins needs to pull something out of his posterior. Enthusiasm is alive and well in Boulder.
"They never blinked"
Thanks Neil. We had some fans blinking and blanching before the game. One in particular is a guy known as donintucson who told us twice how "very very ugly" this game was going to be.

Considering all the BS CU gets about filling the stadium, enthusiasm from the students to connect with their fellow students who play football is refreshing. No, they don't need to "rush" the field after every home victory. However, you don't get your college years back when they are over. Don't keep people from having pleasant experiences to carry with them beyond college. I enjoyed watching the students connect with their fellow students who play football after the game last night.

Wiggins is a pansy. They won the game on the last play in OT. What did you expect - a golf clap ?

Go get a rectal and look for your head.

extrapoint, let's be clear here, what I said was that if the Buffs played like they did against EW, the next 6 games would be ugly. I also said that Hawkins won't win the Big 12, let alone an NC. That remains to be seen doesn't it?

Even though WV literally melted down at the end of the game, and in OT, it is a good win. 300+ yards is a lot of rushing yards, folks. Might want to shore that up a bit with the caliber of teams ahead, maybe learn how to tackle some folks. QB draw is nothing new but the defense played it about as badly as you can on 4 or 5 plays.

Josh Smith really has poor judgement on punts (does not catch a punt and gives up 12 yards of field position, then fields a punt inside the 10 and gets tackled). Need new blood there.(I would rather have a Jeff Campbell type of player back there, not fancy but gets you the field position you need and does not let the ball hit the ground). Most of the offensive problems in the 3rd quarter were because of field position.

A ray of light, Hawkins did not go for it on a 4th and 1 inside his 50, thank God he is learning.

Another ray of light, I formation with fullback lead, must have watched some of USC vs. Ohio St.

A lot more work to be done to compete with the likes of FSU on the road, Texas, and Missouri on the road.

I have forgotten more than you will ever know about college football, extra point, and I have not forgotten very much.

Go Buffs.

buffalo30 - very well stated.

Very good win for the program. Especially the mental toughness it took to hang in there and go toe-to-toe with a very good (not great) West Virginia team. Shoulder to shoulder!

Posted by ksbuff on September 19, 2008 at 9:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)

CU needs all the incentive in the world to keep the students packing the stands, and there is nothing wrong with POSITIVE celebration, something that the student section has lacked in previous year, e.g. Student section being cleared out for the KSU game I think a few years ago. Keep things positive and they can rush the field when CU beats Eastern Washington for all I care. Great win, and its nice to have this to discuss rather then what went wrong. First step on a long road, FSU, UT, KU, KSU(beat CU badly the last 2 times they played, even if KSU looks terrible), Mizzou. Yikes! Keep Pluggin away.

Having stormed the field a few times the past few years (OU most recently) with my kids, I decided to just watch the celebration from my seats. How could anyone be embarrassed by the spirit the student body showed? It was awesome. This was a college football game, not a quilting bee. I would imagine that at least a few potential recruits were sitting in front of the TV last night with their jaws dropped, thinking maybe CU is a school they should consider. It certainly tops the footage of ECU cops beating enthusiastic students. CU students have really kicked it up a notch. Hope they are storming again at homecoming.

Thanks wangdb - that's all I'm looking for. Beat Texas in two weeks when they're a top-5 team - party on the field until the authorities drag you off. Beat West Virginia in week-3 - don't act like it ranks up there with the 10 greatest wins in the program's history. Let certain things be rare and sacred. Storming the field and carrying off goalposts should be among them.

Let the kids have a good time with the players.

The White/Devine backfield is one of the most explosive in the NATION and the best we will see this year. When dealing with players of that caliber it's not about how many yards they get, it's all about the scoreboard PERIOD. They are going to get theirs, but our defense was huge last night.

What was their 3rd down conversion rate? Especially when considering how many of those 3rd downs were from 'manageable' situations (3 and less than 6)? This is the year for our front 7, coupled w/two experienced safeties our defense is going to continue to keep us in games vs. running & somewhat balanced teams. That being said defensively we will be challenged by teams/QBs that throw the ball (Tech/Mizzou). Great, great win, not pretty but huge for the program/team.

Go Buffs!

BIG STAGE...NATIONAL TELEVISION...RANKED OPPONENT...ROCKIN' ATMOSPHERE...HUGE OT WIN...gee, I can see why the Buff Faithful should have just treated this one like any other routine win for a program on the rise...These are games a program on the rise should win? Yeah, unranked squads should beat formerly #8 ranked programs with a QB that had a 27-5 lifetime record as a starter every day of the week...brilliant...ALL Wigginsbuff is looking for is a win over a top 5 Texas squad before anyone celebrates...heck, wiggins probably EXPECTS CU to beat Texas, despite how young these rising Buffs are...if they beat Florida State and Texas, it will be "well, when they beat Missouri and Kansas on the road, THAN and only THAN, do I approve of fans showing their excitement."

Are you kidding me buffalo_flyer? Did you hear the grass scream in pain as the students assaulted it. All of those 150lb college students wearing sneakers are going to ruin the grass? There are three hundred pound men in cleats going to war on it for 3 hours and you woried about some college kids in sneakers that will be on it for 20 minutes. Grow a brain.

Posted by wangdb on September 19, 2008 at 1:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Dizonrocks - I don't know what you think about preseason ranking, but I'm guessing that majority of us think that they are total bull. WVU was a #8 ranked team in the preseason, and their only win now is against a pitiful Villanova team. If you want to be one of the big boys like Texas or Oklahoma you have to act like on, I don't see them rushing the field when they beat a 1-1 team. We should take a cue from our head coach, he wasn't out there screaming his head off, he expected to win, like we all should have.

Why is it that some of you can never be happy? After being at an empty Folsom field for eastern Washington and seeing all the empty seats last night, it is great to at least see some excitement and enthusiasm from those in attendance.

It's great to see that kind of enthusiasm and support for the team! Did you happen to notice how excited the players were? Did you notice the players rushing the field? It's great that the fans wanted to join them in celebration.

This was a huge win for the program. We went toe to toe with a team that has a strong tradition, is nationally ranked, and has superior athletes. This the type of win that should give the team some confidence as they continue this brutal stretch.

If you don't like seeing people rush the field, change the channel or get up from your seat and head to your car.

Posted by wangdb on September 19, 2008 at 1:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Strong tradition? How many national championships does WVU have? They play in the Big East with a bunch of scrubs, where all of a sudden South Florida is power. Superior athletes? We can match up athletically at every position but quarterback. Did you see which 5'6" running back rack up 166 yards? It was a guy named Devine. OutToPasture, you are right, I'm not happy. Back in the McCartney days, and at big boy football schools this would have a been a routine win. I want to see program start to expect to win again and I guess if at first there will be some wild celebration.

Posted by BuffSteve on September 19, 2008 at 2 p.m. (Suggest removal)

There will come a time when a win like this will not cause the students to rush the field. But, for now, this is a great step forward for a program that had hit rock-bottom several years ago. Have you all forgotten?

Recruiting "scandals", sexual assaults, horrible PR from the University president all the way down to the head football coach. The athletic department and the football program was raked over the coals. It's nice to see a glass-half-full attitude instead of the alternative.

If that means the students rush the field after the freakin' spring game then so be it. It's alot better than the bad times we've been through.

wanger - you just climb out from under a rock? We have not had a McCartney era team since, well since the McCartney era. Ranked or not, we upset (WVU was favored to win) a team in OT. Let the kids have their fun. If you don't like it watch the Broncos instaed.

Extrapoint, you are right, I'm actually an angry football watching terrorist. I just think that this program should learn to have a little more pride and realize at beating a suspect Big East team is not something that we will want to go crazy over. Have a little confidence in our coach and this football program, Hawk is going to make some things actually worth celebrating happen. Maybe even get some wins in Boulder than mean something, maybe like winning the division, or how about beat Mizzou?

Posted by bufffan8 on September 19, 2008 at 3:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

wang - for the kids who stormed the field this is the second biggest win they have seen. They are 18, 19, 20 yrs old. A lot of them weren't born during the McCartney era. They can't act like they've been there before because they haven't. Suspect Big East team or not, WV was ranked 21 and favored. For the students this was worth celebrating.

Posted by mgmtgrad on September 19, 2008 at 3:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

A couple of comments made above were regarding 3 or 4 mistakes on defense and offense, every team from top college to NFL makes a few mistakes a game. So if you want count the good with the bad, CU came out winners, plain and simple.

Even top QBs throw an INT or have a fumble, get over it. And no matter what you think about WV, they have some experienced players on defense that helped cause some of those mistakes.

CU is mostly a young team and they played with heart and won against a team that is stronger and faster then the last two CU played this season. White is crazy great, and CU took him on, yes he got a couple of runs in, but nothing as expected by the sports writers.

Bufffan - you are right about these kids, I was pretty young during the McCartney years, but I was definitely a student during the Barnett years and us playing in a weak north division. They weren't so bad, however even then we never got used to winning. I just hope that these kids get a taste of what it's like being at winning big 12 school and competing for the conference every year. I think it's all about expectations and the coaching staff being able to deliver.

I would have rushed the field myself. Let me just throw this out for consumption. I completely agree that we should expect our team to win. However, based on what the Barnett era left us and the rebuilding that has taken place I don't think we are there yet. I sat frantic yesterday looking for updates and watching when we could get a signal at sea. Why, because as much as I love this team and think we are on the rise, I was not sure. Say what you want, WV was a very good win for this team. Over the last week we have endured the nepabuffs (BTW where is he?) and others who thought we would lose this game. So I say shut up. WV was a good team and we beat them. Celebrate your butt off! The team deserves to see that its fans are excited when they fight as hard as they did last night.

Just one time I would like to see a board after a nice win where we talked about football instead of getting into name calling and petty bickering. If you are a fan of NU or any other future opponent other than FSU, wait your turn. Go worry about your team until it is your turn to be run over by Ralphie!

Stay off the field, but a nice win for sure.

Most embarrassing CU fan behavior moments:
1. "Clearing" of the student section v. Nebraska
2. Rushing the field following the West Virgina game last night
3. Rushing the field following a win over a crappy Nebraska team last season.
4. Rushing the field after beating Iowa State in 2002.

I am all for celebrating good times, but no need to make a habit of trashing the field each time we beat a marginally good team at home.

Also saw some kid mouthing off after the game to a family including children and a grandma about "She was Inbred and Illiterate, since you can #@(% your sister in Virginia."

First: son, wrong state
Second: Save your classy comments for douchy Texans and Nebraskans, not kids and grandmas.

The networks choose which games to televise based on quality of opponents, i.e. not a cupcake, and combined with national interest when there are more to choose from same time slots.

Question to notabuff and all the other scarlet and cream fans that come on this board, how many of your non-conference games are televised on national TV this year?

That’s what I thought; CU has 3 of 4 non-conference games on national television this year, including next weeks game on ABC. And CU’s home coming against Texas will be on TV along with NU, so that’s 5 games on national TV.

And don’t forget, MO and CU will also play on TV. WOW 6 games televised and probably more and NU hasn’t even had one yet. Except their game with CU that is already scheduled, and probably MO, how many other games will be televised nationally? None have been picked up yet. According to Yahoo.com next weeks game against VT hasn’t even been picked up yet.

My bad I just found out that the NU/VT game will be a SPLIT telecast, Yahoo wasn't updated when I had last looked.

But my point still stands, CU will have 3 of 4 on national TV.

And if they win a couple more, they should get more TV coverage, like last year.
