Colorado alumnus Kenny Coakley made up significant ground in the second round of the U.S. Amateur but was well shy of the projected cut when play ended Tuesday at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.

Coakley began the day tied for 154th place at 5 over but was able to climb into a tie for 121st with a 3-over effort through 17 holes. The 2006 CU graduate collected two birdies against five bogeys.

The cutoff was 4 over.

Colorado sophomore John Souza, who was in the U.S. Amateur field at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., also fell short of advancing Tuesday. He finished 7 over for the second straight round, with his biggest highlight being a birdie on the par-4 third hole.
