EUGENE, Ore. — Colorado’s disappointing season in women’s basketball hit a low point on Sunday with a record-setting defeat at Matthew Knight Arena.
No. 4 Oregon buried the Buffaloes early and rolled to a 102-43 victory, handing CU its worst loss in nearly 35 years.
The 59-point margin of defeat was the fourth-largest in CU history — and the worst since a 62-point loss at Missouri on March 6, 1984 — and the Buffs’ 41-point halftime deficit set a program record.
CU (10-11, 0-10 Pac-12) has started 0-10 in conference play for the first time in program history.
Playing once again without senior point guard Kennedy Leonard, who has missed seven games with a foot injury, the Buffs fell behind 16-0 in the first six minutes and trailed 27-2 after the first quarter. It was the lowest-scoring first quarter by CU since the NCAA moved to a four-quarter format four years ago.
The Buffs missed their first 14 shots from the floor before a Mya Hollingshed layup two minutes into the second quarter. Hollingshed finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Quinessa Caylao-Do added 11 points, but the Buffs had a miserable day of shooting.
CU made just 25.4 percent (16-for-63) of its shots — the lowest percentage by the Buffs since hitting the same numbers in an NCAA Tournament loss to Kansas on March 23, 2013. During the first three quarters on Sunday, the Buffs made just seven of 49 shots (14.3 percent).
Oregon (21-1, 10-0) became the first team to hit the century mark against CU since Iowa State’s 103-76 victory on Feb. 2, 2005.
The Ducks led 54-13 at halftime, hit 58 percent of their shots (40-for-69) for the game and led by as much as 65 in the fourth quarter. Ruthy Hebard (24 points, 12 rebounds) was one of four Ducks to score in double figures.
