Chidobe Awuzie

Defensive back, Jr., 6-0, 195

He is one of the most versatile players on the roster who is capable of playing any position in the secondary. He was the team’s third-leading tackler last season, despite playing in only nine games. Still looking for his first interception.

Addison Gillam

Inside linebacker, Jr., 6-3, 225

He has racked up 198 total tackles in his first two seasons. Gillam is coming off what was perceived as a sophomore slump, but he suffered through sickness, injuries and some personal struggles last fall, but with all that behind him he could be better than ever this year if he is able to stay healthy.

Samson Kafovalu

Defensive lineman, Jr., 6-4, 260

He’s a fierce competitor who wasn’t able to play college football last season because of off-the-field issues. He is hungry to make his mark and do so at tackle or end. He played in only seven games as a freshman in 2013 but recorded three sacks.

Derek McCartney

Defensive end, So., 6-3, 240

He led the team with 4 ½ sacks as a redshirt freshman last season. He will be asked to play in coverage some this season but he looked up to the challenge in practices. Aside from his sacks last season, he had only one other tackle for loss, which is an area he hopes to improve this year.

Tedric Thompson

Safety, Jr., 6-0, 200

Perhaps the most important player on the defense because of the responsibility being given to safeties this year to make calls. He was responsible for CU’s only three interceptions in 2014 and the Buffs lost two double overtime games in which he wasn’t able to be on the field at the end.
